    Re: 2023 Formula One

interesting results from practices in Singapore, especially with the new FIA directive on flexy wings.

    Coincidence? Perhaps.

Also, 'coincidentally', both Red Bulls are more tail snappy in mid/high speed corners, indicating there is too much downforce in the front..........

Hmm, front wing not deflecting anymore at speed to reduce downforce.............

It's not beyond Newey to design flexible body parts that's I noted grey area of the rule, see the bendy rear wing not a few years ago.

Pretty sure the Red Bull engineers will dialled that out later and get the car back into the proper operating window and Max will fuck off into the far distance again during the race.

Who will win the 'proper' race. Perez then the 2 Ferraris? Or will it be Leclerc over Sainz over Alonso? Or Russell jump in there somewhere?  So excited to see proper racing behind Verstappen. Praying for the cameraman to ignore car #1 the whole race.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

A huge front impact crash for Stroll in Q1 which he walks away from. Hopeful the initial assessment of minimal injury stands.

Hard to be critical of the extra weight and size in modern F1 cars if it leads to improved driver safety.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Seems like this will be the first weekend without a RedBull as a winner.... looking forward to a tight race as the times are quite close to each other, and the tire degradations will surely also add some spice wink

    Re: 2023 Formula One

    Re: 2023 Formula One

A very very interesting weekend to come!

A new FIA TD takes effect this week clarifying the existing rule on movable aerodynamic devices, 18 cars didn't lose any pace relative to others.

Seems like the new TD only affected Red Bull, greatly. Their cars are literally underivable even for Verstappen. Not even different floors or ride height changes can get the car back into the proper window. The front end just doesn't want to bite at all and the aero balance is all wrong.

At least qualifying leans more on the car than the driver. In race condition differences in drivers will show up more with skills, race craft and such so all is not lost for Max and Red Bull. A podium at the minimum is not unreachable for Max.

This also shows, a driver, no matter how good, is nothing without the car, the pair is inseparable. Without a proper car, Hamilton can't shine, same here for Verstappen.

What an exciting Q3, Sainz, Leclerc, Norris, Russell, the young guns all up there.

The pre-qualifying show was a gem, a little interview with Vettel on Max, and the banter between Russell and Norris.

I suppose I did. Didn't expect the rigid front wing TD is going to affect them that badly that they can't even recover.

They must be trimming out the rear downforce hence why they are having wheel spin issue on shifts, less force pressing down.

So weird to see Red Bull cocking up that badly in a weekend, I am so used to them perfecting strategies and pitstops. They have THE BEST team behind the pit wall, something Ferrari can only dream about.

They have to be working really hard right now back in HQ to make changes for Suzuka. I expect at least another new floor in Japan. Not an easy fix however, as without the front wing deflection, that airflow down the car body on either side of the cockpit is greatly affected, fixing it from the bottom side up can't do much.

Man what a treat, hearing him swearing all weekend and there is still another day to go!

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Brundle's comment- a decade ago that would have been unsurvive-able- does give merit to all the added safety car elements and the barriers, he truly slammed it, not quite as hard and straight on as Ayrton hit, but damn near.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

+1 Nick, good analysis. New TD in place, no more RedBull driving circles around all others, kind of interesting Smiley

Funny to see how Max ain't delivering anymore w/o driving a rocket ship anymore Smiley

I suppose George to win on Sunday as Ferrari always has issues with the tyre degradation in the race, same as McLaren and keeping in mind that both Merc drivers have two medium (C2) tires left it's going to be hopefully maybe even a 1-2 for them.

Anyways let's have for the first time in that season a proper race where at least 3-4 teams should be on even level, should be a mega funny event to watch Smiley

    Re: 2023 Formula One

great laps in Q! George and the Ferraris smoking'!!!  this should be a fun race if they can pass.  the end of the RB run.
    Liam Lawson makes q3 wink

    Re: 2023 Formula One

    And now it's Teflon Max!

He escaped 3 potential impeding penalties tonight.

For the Sergeant incident, it was ruled that since there were traffic going all around, he only 'safe' option was to stay and go straight and impede to avoid a potential accident. Being a 2 time WDC has it's privileges over a rookie.

For the pit exit blocking incident, he did earn himself a reprimand, as he admitted doing it for the advantage, even when the team explained his 'advantage' for waiting and creating a gap for himself is negated by turn 5 with everyone else is queued up. The team's excuse for other cars could have over take Vestappen was not accepted as they would have to do it inside the pit lane and not safe.

Now for the juicy bit, his partner in crime for swearing on radio, Tsunoda was impeded by him, very clearly, on the broadcast and everyone else that looked. he got off lightly because magically Alpha Tauri didn't send a representative to the stewards' room, Normally the offended party are "invited" to the hearing to state their case, but this time the stewards for some reasons did not send an invite to Alpha Tauri to have them send someone. Thus, it became just a one sided case and Red Bull was fined only $5000 and another reprimand for Verstappen. So no more grid penalties for tomorrow.

And people wonder why some has lost faith in the FIA completely.

I think this should be a wake up call for Junior. He just isn't good enough for F1. That was pure driver error and he blamed it on the weight bridge AND dirty air from Gasly who was so far in front he can't even see him shadow. He simply panicked and over drive the car.

Red Bull is going to have a drivers problem. Max isn't going anywhere, so is Yuki, at least until 2026 with his Honda connections. Lawson is the real deal and Ricciardo might not have a seat when he comes back. And then there is Perez. Maybe Aston should sign one of Perez or Ricciardo to replace Junior and help out Red Bull.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

What a race without the Red Bulls in the picture! exciting racing!

Pity for Russell at the end, but not unlike mistakes Leclerc would make when under pressure. They still need some simmering.

And what race craft Sainz had. He was asking about gap to Norris and the TV presenters was like wtf why he doesn't cared about the Mercedes. Turns out Sainz was planning to use Norris as his shield all along. Extremely clever way to drive to the win.

And Max did climb all the way back to top 5.

What a joy to watch a race what the top three top four are all within 2 seconds… well deserved win for Ferrari and Sainz, what a shame that Russel made a mistake in the last round and great effort by Norris. Hamilton was also looking very fast in the end, even faster than the rest of the front runners I think, just a joy to watch a race like that. Maybe we should just exclude Red Bull for the rest of the championship as they won both titles already basically 😂

Ferrari! Isn't this wonderful! A crisp, strategic, intelligent drive, with no major mess ups from the pit wall!

Haha I been saying that, just DHL them both trophies and be done with. Red Bull can even save money for next year by skipping travelling the rest of the year!

And the camera crew this year was smart enough to exclude Verstappen from coverage until the very end, Max got more screen time tonight than any races this year running mid pack. This race tells so much about the importance of the car, even a driver as talented as Max was just a sitting duck all race.

And the advantage of running 1st in clean air is clearly shown today. Sainz and Leclerc are running the same strategy, but since Sainz is in the front, he dictates the pace while Leclerc is forced to run in dirty air all race, and he simply used up his tires more quickly that way and ended up 20 seconds behind.

Leclerc and Russell are the riskier drivers of the young guns, they do make more mistakes at times. Tonight is a prime example for Russell, he is super aggressive and just took too big a bite trying to open up the corner and tagged the wall. Norris tagged it too but he wasn't as aggressive, difference likely going be measured in cm if not fraction of a cm there.

Lawson is mighty impressive as a stand in. Trying to picture him in a more competitive car........Dream would be next to Max in the Red Bull, but Jos, and Max definitely won't allow it, as lawson might upend Max's number 1 status there. Mercedes and Ferrari is full, so is McLaren. Only better team for him would be Aston, but daddy definitely aren't booting his own son for a serious upgrade in driver talent level though. Poor Lawson.

Williams could swap Sargeant for Lawson, but Sergeant do bring with him American dollars........

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Perez commits the motoring equivalent of seppuku as Max is almost flawless and carries Red Bull to another Constructor’s Championship.  McLaren looking strong.

    Re: 2023 Formula One

Mighty exciting race today, those McLarens are something. Mercedes also provided some much needed fireworks for this year's F1.

Red Bull, proved that they are the indeed the dirtiest team, or the greyest team, depending on the point of view, for sneaking in Perez's penalty. Perez, oh boy Perez, who used to be one of the cleanest racer on the grid, what are you doing today?!?!?! You aren't MAx's gf's ex boyfriend!! After joining Red Bull, he is fully committed to the dirty tricks and became one of the worst drivers on the grid. Come on Perez, you are better than that!

What a performance from Piastri. Oh Alpine, how badly you screwed up by screwing Piastri.

As expected, Yuki got a contract extension because of his Honda connection, and surprisingly Ricciardo too, so where would Lawson ended up? Would Red Bull can Perez to put him on the big team? Logically it's a no brainer, but somehow Verstappen wont let that happened cause it would upset his reign as the top dog there. Could he go to Williams? Tough choice, Sergeant brings them American money, and Lawson doesn't bring anything other than performance on track.

It was a bad call from Mercedes to have Hamilton and Russell swap. Russell had a go idea, use the Sainz trick. Should have tried that.

And we need more screen time from the cool down room, that's where all the best stuff are coming from!!

oh no nicky, yawn, RB penalises itself by keeping Perez [100 + points lost '23, and what - another 100---200 in '24?] -Norris, PastrI, even Liam better points scorers in '24 in an RB, and that clown Riccardo.   Can MB get moving next year?  Can Has Been Hamilton light up his helmet? Can Norris contain Pastri?

But Watt, this is only because for the dirty or at the very minimum grey tactics of Red Bull.
