Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

A lot of posts in this forum will confirm you that the CDplayer read MP3 files on every 997 build after end of april 05. Not necassary to wait for the modelyear 2006.
If your 997 is build in june, you're OK for MP3 reading.

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

this afhternoon i go to the dealer,
a new 997s is just arrived for a customer, and i will check the mp3 possibility

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

As cartouche says, 997 and 987 already play mp3. I know from personal experience since my my delivered 997 plays mp3. Dealers don't know about this yet, I was the one to infrom mine.

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

Not to be ungrateful for the MP3 playback, but does anyone know if it can read MPEG4/AAC? iTunes converts everything to this format and it would be nice not needing to convert it back to MP3.

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

Does anybody know something about upgrading my 1st week april build cabriolet
Will it be possible to make a software upgrade or not?

    [speculation mode on]
I assume that it is not a mere software upgrade. There are two ways to decode MP3s, either do it in software or do it in hardware. If it is done in software, MP3 decoding should be independent of the CDROM drive. So, playing MP3s should also work in the CD changer. Since several people have reported that CDs with MP3s cannot be played by the CD changer, it looks like they do it in hardware. If it is done in hardware, an easy way is to use a CDROM drive that is equipped with an additional chip for MP3 decoding. They could also use a decoder chip in the PCM itself, but then again there is no reason why MP3s cannot be played by the changer. So, you most likely have to get the internal CDROM drive of the PCM replaced. I'm pretty sure that PAG service is not qualified to do that. Therefore, I suspect that there will be no easy update for older PCMs.

We're working on that but the current "unofficial" info we got says: no software update for MP3 capability possible.

That bites. I will be complaining to my dealer about this.

You shouldn't really, your dealer has nothing to do with this.
FWIW, if you want to complain, call Porsche AG.
But that's the way things have always been, models get upgraded year after year and there's nothing you can do about it.

But in the middle of the year? If it's a 2006 model, I agree. But I have a 2005 and the mp3 change is on a 2005. If it's standard equipment on a 2005, and there's no change in price, shouldn't I also get the mp3 capability? You're right, though, my dealer has nothing to do with it, but if I don't like what I hear from Porsche headquarters, I've got half a dozen customer satisfaction surveys that I haven't filled yet waiting to be turned in and I'm not going to be nice.

I collected my Boxster 3/3/05. I paid Pounds1,850 for PCM + navigation and less than two months later I find out that both are out of date. (MP3 on PCM and now an upgraded navigation with route guidance TMS). Not pleased. Why weren't both of these upgrades available from the start? Neither are that new technology. My wife's Pounds6k Kia has an MP3 stereo as standard!

AGREE WITH THIS ASSESSMENT 100 PERCENT!

This is EXTREMELY not serious for Porsche...next time i'll think more before buy a "new model car"....or best i'll think more before buy a PORSCHE!!!!

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

    Another data point.

My car is an April build (end of April I assume from the delivery date) and has software version 3.0 on it. It also has a CD player that the dealer replaced in May.

    It won't play MP3.

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

Will the optional disc changer play MP3 as well or is it only the in dash player that can read it?

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

    Just the dash player.

Has anyone found out about updating the PCM to play MP3 CDs?

I REALLY want this feature - to be able to just put 100 songs on one CD would be SO cool...

    ANYONE ?

Ok - an dealer who shall remaim nameless told me...

To check in my manual and see if it says the stereo will play mp3 discs. If it says it can then he will try and get it replaced under warranty..... tricky tricky..... I'll check and let you all know what it says... somehow I doubt it mentions mp3 CDs but we'll see.....

Some background info: I have one of the EARLY '05 models that does not play mp3 CDs.

Re: Ok - an dealer who shall remaim nameless told me...

just curious, for those who has an unit that is MP3 compatible, does it have a sticker that says it is mp3 compatible on the PCM unit?? i went to the dealer to check out mine today and it doesn't have a sticker. its built date is 5/20 and the salesperson said he doesn't know anything about it. thanks in advance.

There is no sticker and even the manual doesn't tell anything about the MP3/WMA playing capability. Strange.

And I would like to tell you guys something: without Rennteam.com spreading this information, most owners wouldn't probably even know that their PCM is playing MP3/WMA files too. Porsche apparently introduced the updated PCM system shortly before the factory shutdown, among over "improvements" which are actually "official" for MY 2006 only. I'm sorry if this "early" information caused trouble for some dealers or even Porsche but I really think that you can't blame Porsche for introducing a new feature. Of course I would have loved to have MP3/WMA playing capability on my early mid 2004 997 Carrera S but this is how it works nowadays, improvements come all the time and you can't stop it. Maybe the next PCM system gets satellite radio and DVD video playing capability... That's life.

Re: Ok - an dealer who shall remaim nameless told me...

do you mean will it be possible to upgrade the pcm1 to pcm2 without making any hardware change?
    i hope yesss!

The PCM 1 (CD based, used on most 996 models) is not compatible to PCM 2 installations.
The current PCM 2.1 could theoretically be installed on PCM 2 (DVD version) equipped cars but I think there have been some changes in wiring/whatever too and it may not work.

I'm not sure why you understood my post the wrong way but I'm afraid there won't be any easy upgrade (or even update) solution.

Re: Ok - an dealer who shall remaim nameless told me...

    thanks rc,
i am not happy about this at all. but since there is nothing to do we need to wait and see.

by the way ps on my question: i mixed up pcm 1 with pcm 2 sorry about that:)
