Thanks. I went through the iTunes website and found that when you burn your CD, you can chose to convert the AIFF files to MP3 - so it shouldn't be a big problem for those with large iTunes databases....

hi carlos, i don't know if i missed an answer to this on some thread somewhere BUT, can the dealer update your software, or change the PCM's cd player to be able to read mp3's etc. ? my cab is a pre-mp3 build so it can't play mp3's

mike, i believe the hardware is different as well, i believe the new PCM can play CD-RWs - which requires a different laser.
PS. it cannot play AIFF, only mp3 and WMA.

No, the updated PCM2 does NOT play Apple iTunes protected files.
To play your iTunes music in your PCM2 equipped car, you have three choices, two of them (the last two) are NOT legal:
1. take your iPod with you and use a FM transmitter or whatever to listen to the music on it.
2. record an AUDIO CD from iTunes with your iTunes songs and convert these songs to unprotected MP3 files (pretty easy with Windows if you're using a certain program/driver to automatically unprotect the files).
3. there is a program available which can unprotect your whole iTunes music collection (compatible even with iTunes 4.8) and after that you're able to transform your music into MP3 or whatever you want.
I can't and I won't provide the names of the programs needed to do step 2 and 3 but if you do a Google search, you may find them yourself.
Regarding No.2: I don't know if the created audio files burned to CD using iTunes are protected, I never tried to convert them to MP3. AIFF files are standard audio files found on every audio CD.
So just use iTunes to burn a normal CD-R audio CD. iTunes automatically converts the MP3 files to AIFF for you, and it will play, even on the "old" PCM.
Only downside: 1 CD = max. 10 to 15 songs...

You should re-read my post: I stated that changing protected iTunes files to UNPROTECTED MP3 files (and this is THE ONLY way to be able to get 200+ songs on a CD for playing it in the upgraded PCM2 system), is illegal in most countries worldwide.
And of course the PCM plays CD-R discs and even most CD-RW discs.
The original question was: does the updated PCM2 system, which is now capable of playing MP3/WMA files, play protected MPEG-4 Apple iTunes files too? And the answer was NO but...
I hope I clarified the whole thing, even in my "bad" English.

thanks for all the help. I was trying to convert my ripped CDs (which were unfortunately in AIFF format) to MP3 format - it was VERY easy to do this using iTunes.
Now, I have something to keep me busy as I wait for my car (Got VIN!!!)

You may be able to convert NON-PROTECTED AIFF files to MP3 using iTunes but you can NOT convert PROTECTED MPEG-4 iTunes files to unprotected MP3 using iTunes. Not possible.
So there is the same dilemma: you need a special software to un-protect the MPEG-4 files or to convert protected Audio CDs to MP3.
