Front hood open's after polishing

I was at the dealer the other day and I asked the service manager if he knew anything about the front hood latch opening by itself and he said yes he does. The root cause is polishing your front headlight which causes static and short circuit one of the switches (not sure which Switch) which in turns opens the front hood. Porsche will be releasing a new switch that will resolve this issue. For now they advice to wash the headlight but DONT polish it like I did. No biggy. Just ask your service manager next time you are there to get you a new switch. I can ask and get more specific ifno about this switch if anybody is interesterd but not until Monday. Cheers.

More specific information would be greatly appreciated.

THAT is so amazing. Now we must also consider stray magnetism and miniscule electrostatic discharges as posing a threat to us getting somehere on the public roads safely and in a timely fashion in our own cars? Holy COW!

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

Amazing coincidence in timing. My car has been with a detailing shop for the past few days and when I drove away after collecting it this afternoon, a warning message appeared saying "System Fault Visit Workshop". As the dealer is only a few miles away, I drove straight there. He said exactly the same thing after connecting the car to the porsche computer system - it came up with two error codes which he said he expected (4024 or something like that). He reset the codes, and said that its a known problem acknowledged by Porsche but without a fix where the static that builds as a result of polishing the around the headlights and hood shorts the switch holding the hood latch. He cleared the faults from memory and said he'd be in touch as soon as he had any news from Porsche. Interestingly, he said another customer with a 997S had the exact same problem, and all of the mechanical/hardware components had been replaced but it made no difference, so he seemed to thing a software fix was going to be required to work around this issue.

My car is 6 months old and this is the first time its happened. The hood doesnt unlock, but I get the system fault error instead. Has not happened again since it was fixed this afternoon.

Well it's a great party trick. "Hey, watch the genie try to get out of the trunk when I rub the lights."

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

Use Zaino Z6 on the headlights, it takes care of static!

So, let me get this straight. If you shock the car with right amount of electricity in the right spot, you can open the hood? Now can you do that to the door?

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

So, I guess don't leave any valuables in the front trunk because of this. What about the cd changer? Are we at risk because of this flaw?

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

very very good point, i'm also concerned now, here in SA we have the most and worst cases of thefts!

Yeah, I'm embarassed because I WAS thinking this was funny and only quirky and slightly annoying. NOW it's possible it's a real PAIN in the A**!

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

Flashman
The car you refer to was mine....As a courtesy to Porsche, I don't want to post too much info other than to say that the info silverrules posted is correct and the cause of the SF/latch issue is indeed due to static discharge. Also, Porsche have solved the System Fault/hood latch, although it isn't readily available yet(I've had it installed in my car for about a month....and have polished the living cr@p out of the lights/car...absolutely NO PROBLEMS). Despite what we may think, Porsche take fixing these sorts of problems very seriously....I can't begin to tell you how responsive they've been (once the cause was identified). Extraordinary customer service

To sum up, it's not washing that trips the latch/SF, it's polishing (particularly headlights)....Don't put Zaino or Plexus etc. on the headlights (it doesn't matter if the product is anti static, the cloth you use isn't!!). If you need to clean the headlights...just make sure the cloth is slightly damp and gently wipe.

jfraser,
What is the fix?
I had the latches and related components replaced 3 months ago and havent had a SYSTEM FAULT problem since.
Is there another issue that needs to be addressed? Do more components need to be replaced to have a permanent solution to this problem?

Hallelujah!

I guess I can table my idea of demanding the ultimate retrofit *UPGRADE*.... Front Hood Latch in LEATHER!!

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

The hood released on me two times after polishing, but I thought it was random. Thank you for the post. My only "problem" after 5500 miles.

LOL

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

Thats four or five (maths is not my strong point) US cars with this problem, but no reports from ROW, is the fault related to the extra internal release latch that US cars have? Which would mean that ROW (me included) need not worry about this.

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

John, I don't think its a US problem since the switch and everything in question is the same for US and Row cars, and both are built in the same place, so I would't think tha US spec would have an influence in this issue
Its probably a matter of coincidence. So I'm afraid we will have to keep crossing your finguers!

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

I was afraid you would say that Carlos, I may spend soem time polishing my headlights to provoke it so that it is sorted out!

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

I think it is related to the extra internal Emergency Release latch in the front boot of US spec cars. I have yet to hear or see any RoW car owner report this fault on the Internet. That does not mean it has NOT happened. Have you heard of this reported in Europe, Carlos?

If it were happening in RoW, it does seem necessary for PAG to send engineers to the US west coast to find the fault.

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

Off topic, but is it me only that thinks that emergency releast latch is the most moronic thing ever specifically in the 911's front trunk? I realize that it may be a US regulation, but who's going to fit in that trunk let alone pull the release lever?

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

John
It's a US specific issue you have nothing to worry about.

Thats a good point DD964, I did not consider that latch, who the hell thinks these things up BTW, the same guy how had the brilliant idea of the bright airbag stickers on the visors?

But I can't think how that latch can affect this electronic glitch, its just a mechanical latch isn't it?
No RoW cases comes to mind but I have not looked into RoW vs US in all the cases I have heard of. I will pay attention to it though.

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

Carlos
It's not a mechanical latch, it's a solenoid activated by a control module

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

I guess marketing won out over engineering to produce a latch that would allow operation from a key button. Personally, I would be happy with the tried and true mechanical latch.

Now I hear Porsche is going to add Keyless locks and starting to the mix. Yikes!!

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

jfraser, thats selenoid too? I see then, now it makes sense. So in fact its that extra US selenoid that malfunctions and not the regualer one that all cars get? I guess John and I can polish out front lights to our heart desires

DD694, I agree, in a time were the trend of overcomplication with the electronics is causing such realiabilty headaches in high-end cars (looks at were it got Mercedes now) why complicate things further with useless electrical gimics that already have a good mechanical solution? in fact I'm so used to the regular latch next to the seat of my 996, that in my 997S I always forget to use the remote key and still use the latch by the seat

Re: Front hood open's after polishing

With keyless starting, will the left-hand of steering wheel ignition switch disappear? I wonder.
