Canary Wharf Motorexpo, London 13-19 June

Is anyone here planning to go to the Motorexpo? I'll be making several trips at least during the week when it's taking place because I work in Canary Wharf so it's so easy to pop in at lunchtime or after work.

If anybody would like to meet up, do let me know.

BTW, I understand that it will be the first time that a production version of the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage is displayed. Ron, I'll be remembering you...

As for photos, don't worry, I will have my camera with me...

WOW - simply amazing - I went at lunchtime for a good look at the wonderful cars on show. Gorgeous sunny day, beautifully polished cars shining outdoors in the sun against the space age ultra modern backdrop of Canary Wharf.

What can I say - I was left speechless by some of the cars.

    In no particular order:

Yellow Ford GT (it looks even more muscular in real life - what a car!)
    Audi Le Mans winner
Mercedes Benz CLS (I didn't see which engine size)
Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG (looked very sophisticated in silver)
    Mercedes Benz CLK DTM
    Jaguar XKR Convertible
    Range Rover Sport
    Bentley Continental Flying Spur
    Lotus Exige
    Nissan 350Z Roadster
    Lotus Elise 111R
    Maserati Quattroporte (absolutely beautiful interior)
Ferrari F430 Spyder (my eyes popped out, bounced on the floor before popping back into my head! absolutely gorgeous)
    Ferrari 612 Scaglietti
Marcos TSO GT2 (looked like a TVR clone)
Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet (understated by comparison but beautiful silver with blue leather and red seat belts)
    Porsche Boxster S
    Bentley Continental GT
    BMW Williams F1 2004 car
Pagani Zonda S (with a glass hardtop!) (metallic cherry red - the most striking car on show)
    Aston Martin Vanquish S
Aston Martin V8 Vantage (metallic cherry red - I sat inside - it feels like being in a DB( but a little smaller inside. Beautiful shape - shame about the Pounds79,995 price tag and 2-3 year waiting list)
    Aston Martin DB9 Volante
    Jaguar E-Type Roadster
    Corvette C6
Ducati 999 (best looking bike on show)
    Range Rover Autobiography
    VW Golf GTI

Today was just a sneak look. I will have my camera each day this week so I hope to take some great photos to post here soon. I will also upload the photos I took last year.

For those of you who live in NW Europe, it's really worth coming to this. It's a free motor show open 10-6pm.

Re: Canary Wharf Motorexpo, London 13-19 June

I went back to the Motorexpo this lunchtime to get a much better look at the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage. It was in toro red with black leather interior.

My first impression was its jawdropping beauty. They had a DB9 Volante (the convertible), the AMV8 and the Vanquish S side by side. The AMV8 just looked more contemporary in subtle but noticeable ways.

Interestingly the AMV8 is approximately 15cm shorter than the DB9. Sorry, this is just a guess not an exact measurement.

I thought that toro red is a breathtaking colour. Sophisticated AND eye-catching and not as understated as the more usual silver greys which one often sees other Astons in.

I didn't like the black leather colour. It lacked a feeling of richness. I would have preferred to see a lighter colour with toro red e.g. tan, magnolia, beige etc with some leather piping on the seat edges in a contrasting colour e.g. dark red to match the paint colour.

I sat in the drivers seat: it's a very cosy, cosetted feel. The seats seem v supportive but the best test is obviously when cornering at speed. I operated the electric seat mechanism which was very smooth and adjusted in every direction easily. I'm 1.90m (about 6'3") and I felt there was a slight lack of legroom for me.

The quality of the finish is at first glance immaculate. Handstitching everywhere the eye can see. The dashboard is remrkably similar to the DB9 with the same distinctive metal instrument dials etc. The central part of the dashboard does not have wood as standard as in the DB9 but is leather instead. There is a manual gear shifter and no satnav display as standard. I believe that the full leather interior is an option in any case. The rep told me they use approximately 5 cow hides for each interior.

One comment: the gear lever is very solid and feels great especially back and forth. I pressed the clutch and moved the lever from 1-2-3-4-5-6 and back down again. It felt very precise and solid with a very even weight. However, this may be just this particular gear lever but from side to side in neutral, the lever felt v v notchy. I can't describe it any other way. I counted at least 2-3 notches when moving it from side to side. This may smooth out with use.

The engine compartment is a beautiful view. The dipstick is a polished chrome cap which screws off and when pulled up, has a polished chrome tube.

The headlamps are gorgeous. They are slightly smaller overall than on the DB9. There is a kind of side indicator made up of a curved line of clear light bulbs on the inner side of the headlamp. It looks liked a jewelled Swiss watch. This complements the styling elsewhere e.g. the metal instrument dials and switchgear inside. Very chic!

I can confirm that chrome does indeed surround the side windows. Some of the earlier prototypes didn't have this and it looked incomplete. The chrome just adds a little class. The fuel filler compartment has a cover painted in the exterior body colour but not the chrome cap like the Vanquish S.

The standard stereo is a bespoke Alpine system with 150W upgradable to 400W. The Aston rep was not 100% sure. However, there won't be a Linn system as in the Vanquish S or the DB9 nor will there be a Mark Levinson system as in the Lexus.

Standard wheels will be 18 inches. The 19 inch wheels are optional. Pedals inside the car are metal with small black dots. Carpets have quite a thick pile.

The boot is not bad at all. It is on 2 split levels. Near the back of the front seats, it is not that deep at all. Under that area is the gearbox and the fuel tank. A removable parcel shelf fits there too. Closer to the near end of the boot, it is much deeper. As a visual guess, I would say that one could fit a golf bag in the deeper part and a couple of small hand baggages in the part of the boot closer to the backs of the front seats. (I should mention that the car only has 2 seats with no rear seats for occasional use by kids).

There is a small compartment to the right within the boot in which various electrical cables were contained. I know this because the carpeted panel protecting this area fell off in my hand as I checked the boot area. I hope this is not indicative of build quality generally...

These are just a few casual observations of the new AMV8 which I hope you will find of interest.

My impression after this brief encounter is one of exceptional beauty with a luxurious 'feel' to both the exterior and the interior. At Pounds80,000, it isn't cheap but it feels like a very luxurious place to be in ...like you feel when you're in a Bentley. I doesn't feel like an out and out sportscar but instead like a gentleman's car for driving swiftly yet effortlessly. The real test however will be when I drive one. I hear the sound is incredible ...a very muscular snarling Aston sound..

The Aston rep also mentioned that there is a 3-4 year waiting list and that only 3000 cars will be made annually.

He also said that Aston would honour warranties where cars had been used on a track. By the way, the Aston has a dry sump lubrication system.

That's all I have to report at the moment. I'll pay another visit another day this week or over the weekend. If I hear anything more, I'll let you know.

    Hope this has been informative....

Re: Canary Wharf Motorexpo, London 13-19 June

    Thanks easy_rider911 - it's a crying shame I can't get up there this year.

Any chance of some pics of the AMV8 - need to get something to make the wait easier.

Oh, sod it - might just have to bunk off work tomorrow!!!!

Re: Canary Wharf Motorexpo, London 13-19 June

    Quick corrections:

The Mercedes Benz CLS-Class on display is a CLS500 and the SL-Class is a SL55 AMG (not an SL65 AMG as stated earlier).

No sign of any new BMWs though - bit of a shame!
