    Re: audio options

The problem is that aftermarket installs, even good ones, may provoke a series of unwanted gremlins caused by an incompatibility. I doubt they connected the install to the car's digital network, it would cause a mess. Instead, they just worked "around" it. Unfortunately such installs have to be done with caution because alternations in power could harm the network and cause malfunctions. Same with alarm systems retrofits.

Exactly along with more holes and holes via drilling.I really would just stick with the standard system because these days 99% of sound systems are ample for most. The more you move your interior the more chance you got of those irritating rattles appearing..

If I can not get a better system fitted before I pick the car I simply stick with whats in their already..

    throt.

    Re: audio options

I tend to agree with throt, eventaugh I do get and understand and would be tempted by Carlos points.
BUT...I do not want to take the rist of extra little squeeks ( that tends to happen when factory fitted screws are unsrewed) I used to get the good aftemarket systems installed but have now stoped.
I have an audiophile system at home to please my ears....
But I admit to sometimes miss a better sound in the car...have chosen to have peace of mind instead.

    Re: audio options

I concur with Carlos --- listen to an Alpine F1 system at highway speeds - I am not talking about a mere 70-80 mph, go faster, and just absolutely revel in the power of the system. No it won't be a living room environment with acoustic paneling, correct 30 degree listening angles and an uneven ceiling (in fact, with the top down there is no ceiling) - but once you hear one (which I have, and have seen custom installed into many Porsches) you go back to the Bose feeling disappointed. I am an audiophile so my opinion will differ from most, but for those who really appreciate music AND want a reference system in their vehicle, throwing down the $20,000 for an Alpine F1 system is well worth it. Of course, since I am receiving a 987 S, a surround system is less practical (though the car isn't very practical anyway) and I will put money towards cloaking the vehicle from police, and performance enhancements...the audio will be the icing on the cake. :-D

    Re: audio options

Bottom line, do the ends justify the means?? I don't think so, but that's just me and my persnickity aversion of aftermarket ANYTHING that I can't accomplish the install of myself. Otherwise, I don't trust all those coke-heads down at the high-end auto hi-fi salon.

$20,000 grand to upgrade the stereo?? I can envision the conversation now....

"So, are you getting a new 997 twin turbo???"

"No, I'm buying a new 997S, and sending it across town to have a shop remove most of the interior, risking infinite future rattles, and tossing $20,000 into the stereo, at which point my car will also depreciate yet more."

    "Oh....I see........."

Priorities I suppose. I'd love for my stereo to be better, I'd absolutely love it. But the ends don't justify the means in my realm of auto logic, and my collector's mindset.

    Re: audio options

I cannot believe how good the upgraded Bose sounds and I have the Cab. I thought the system in my 996TT was good. This one is better. And loud as anything.

Are they all coke-head ? ...woaw... and what about the high end rims salon ? all coke- heads too? And what about the advertisement department at Porsche?...
    Who would of thaught so?
    I must be so naive!!!

    boss

    Re: audio options

"So, are you getting a new 997 twin turbo???"

"Yes, and I'm sending it over to AI Design to put 20,000 worth of high-end audio because I'm an audiophile that wants a set-up in my car, cost no-object."

    If you can buy a twin-turbo, what's another 20,000?

    :-D

    Re: audio options

    Phil,
Does the standard system have the audio pilot that adjusts volume based on speed ? This works really well.
I kinda disagree with not being able to enjoy a better system in a convertible. That's like saying the sound system at an out door concert doesn't matter. Matter of fact I think the upgraded Bose is even more important because it's a cab. It's a subjective thing though and like you said before your car isn't used for commuting. In the 12 days I have my car I have 750 miles. I drive over 50 miles a day back and forth from my office. Avg. speed recorded is only 35 mph. At that speed with PSE off it's very, very quiet with the top down. It's quieter at 35 mph with the top down than in my 996TT coupe with the drivers window slightly opened. For my fair-weather only ride - my CS I couldn't care less about the stereo. I have the OPTIONAL stereo in that car but it's pretty bad. There's 2 speakers to the whole system. And maybe I've listened to it 3 or 4 times total. I rather listen to the engine/ exhaust. So I completely get your drift.

    Re: audio options

    Stradale,

I think the standard system adjusts the volume based on speed also.

I can speak only for myself since most of the use of my car is recreational, no daily commute. When my wife and I take off for a run to the beach with the top down, the sound system is at low levels in the background. If I was involved in a daily commute I probably would have considered the Bose. The problem is, if I go out during the work week I typically spend the entire drive on the phone, so I don't end up listening to anything. My business is very phone oriented. I can't tell you how many times I have taken off with a new CD to listen to while traveling, only to return without ever getting a chance to listen to it because of the constant phone calls.

Plus with all this talk about the Bose system I really wonder how many here have actually spent time with the standard system? It is really a decent system. It is MUCH better than the $1500 HiFi option on my '99 996. The Bose system may be better, but the standard system is vastly superior to some upgraded systems found in other cars. As I mentioned earlier, I think it sounds as good or better than the Bose system in my wife's S class Mercedes.

I think getting the Bose system is a good choice for most buyers. It just wasn't important for my type of usage......and the standard system is better than most here are giving it credit for. In some past threads about this topic some who have seriously listened to both have said that the Bose is marginally better. I don't know since I haven't heard the Bose.

    Phil

    Re: audio options

    stradale,
the audio pilot doesn't(never)worked on my car...
any suggestion?am i missing some setup...?
    thank you.

    Re: audio options

At my age (50) after a mis-spent youth at waaaay to many rock concerts I don't think my remaining ability to discern audio at the "phile" level in my soon to arrive C2S Cab is even an issue any more. That said, I'm confident the Bose high end will be more than enough as compaired to my last two 911 cab systems!!!

I leave all that extreme high end $$tuff for those of you with real or ego driven auditory abilities... enjoy!
