    Report on A/C Repair

Last week, the car was serviced for an air conditioning problem. It was not blowing cold air. Tech said there was only 1/2 pound of refrigerant in the car. There's supposed to be 2 pounds. He could not find a leak, but noticed that the one of the connections near the Schrader value was not as tight as it could be. However, he didn't think that was the cause of the "leak." He said that he could not reach all of the lines for inspection because he would have had to take apartthe bottom of the car to get to the lines. We are going to see if it leaks again and if so then the car will be taken apart. The approach seems reasonable to me. It's not a serious issue until the 80-90F summer temperatures arrive.

Hope this helps in case anyone else encounters the issue.

This kinda stuff makes me mad. No problem for him to do this: big inconvenience for you.

Like a turned on garden hose with nozzle, the system has a leak or it doesn't. You inspect THE ENTIRE length to FIND the leak. You don't look at the easy-to-see ten feet of it and say "that might be the cause of the leak even though there's no water coming out, Come back later if it still leaks."

That service department has no problem wasting YOUR time.

    Re: Report on A/C Repair

As I posted earlier the Schrader valve was the culprit. It never happened again.

    Re: Report on A/C Repair

please, what is a Schrader valve ?

    Re: Report on A/C Repair

    OK I found it :
Definition: A type of valve fitting that opens when depressed. Schrader valves are used in tire valve stems, on air conditioning hoses and on the fuel rails of many fuel injection systems.

I remember your post, and I'm very grateful. Thanks! I bet it will be fine. We shall see.

The 997 is a new generation car. I've been down this road before with the 3rd-generation RX-7. I hated the car for the 1st two years. I almost turned it in a lemon. Glad I didn't!!! I moved and put the car on the Autobahn and all of it's problems disappeared. I just let the car run wild. It broke my heart to give up the RX-7 after 7 years and 125000+ miles later. I would buy one again, considering all the fond memories from driving it (stopping here before the bragging really starts!).

So when I think about how things started with the RX-7, the 997 is starting off a thousands times better in terms of quality and reliability than my RX-7. Maybe that's reason number 43, why I bonded to the 997 faster than any car I have ever owned.

Besides, I cannot complain about Porsche of Arlington. Chad and Mark have done an outstanding job of providing me with service for about 5 years. The technicians have also done an outstanding job of explaining to me the process of repairing the vehicle, giving me the respect I deserve as a "motorhead in training," as i call it. Anyway, I have to stop now because I'm getting all misty eyed. Cheers, 997 lovers.

PS If you don't respect a Mazda 3rd-gen. RX-7, go drive one at 165 mph. You will be blown away at the downforce, balance in turns, silence of the high-rev'ing rotory engine, and sheer power of the twin-seq. turbos going up a mountain road. So many stories I could tell you!

    Re: Report on A/C Repair

    Hope the quick fix works

    Re: Report on A/C Repair

Raptor, I think it's safe to say it worked. I'm freezin' my n@#s off! Wahahahaha!

    Holminator

Is you ac still blowing cold air? Mine isn't and i wanted to see if the fix you had done is still working.

    Re: Holminator

It still works (still cold), although two weeks ago I had a doubt or two for about a day (probably just me being psycho). That day I could have swore I smelled vingar, too. Weird. It has not gotten very hot here yet (summers in the high 90s) so we shall see. Hottest outside temp. so far has been in the high 80s. I'm going on a road trip to Blowing Rock, NC (USA) next week so I'm betting that a problem will happen on the day I jet up there.

    Re: Air Conditioner Again

Two days before my trip to NC now and guess what happened. Outside air temp. reached 91F today and my air conditioner is not working properly. I have an appointment for tomorrow morning. I think I have a leak.

    Re: Air Conditioner Again

Porsche of Arlington removed the underbody cowling and found the leak near the left front tire. A defective O-ring at the junction of two pipes was the cause of a slow leak. They recharged my system, but we have to wait for the odd-sized O-ring to be shipped in. I'll go back on Monday to get it done (1-2 hours at the most). In the mean time, tomorrow I'm off to Staunton, VA to join up with a convoy of other Porsches and a Ferrari or two that will continue on to Blowing Rock, NC for the BRBS (www.brbs.org). Lots of mountain twists and turns on the Blue Ridge Parkway! As Jed Clampette would say, "weeeel-doggie!" It's going to be heaven!

Here's a camera picture at the dealership today (the very same spot were the schwarze Schwaben Prinzessin and me were married). I'm getting all misty eyed. Help. Well, at least she won't leave me for another woman! LOL! Long story--don't ask!

    Re: Air Conditioner Again

Darn those German O rings, darn them !!!!

Hope its back on the road soon!

    Re: Air Conditioner Again

Glad they found the problem Tony... Have a great time in Blowing Rock and sorry I couldn't make it. I will join you all next year... take pics!

    Have the same problem

Chicago got warm this week and it became very obvious that my a/c is not working properly compared to my Audi.

Car goes to the dealer Saturday. Let's see whether it's the O ring or compressor...

Don't you love the one week long Spring we had? Hope you get it sorted out soon.

    Re: Have the same problem

Thanks Jenna. Harvey says it's not too late to change your mind! LOL! Anyway, next year, we'll all have a blast! I've got the real camera (not the camera phone) packed this time unlike at Pimlico.

Alin, thanks! How are you and your ride doing? I remember we got our cars around the same time (I remember how the wait DROVE us crazy!). By this weekend, I'm going to have 13k miles. What fun! I hope your ride is performing well, too!

    God I love road trips!!!

13K!!! I thought I drove my C2S mercilessly...and I have grand total of 5.1K! Knock on wood, but mine has been flawless thus far. Only trip to dealer was for a oil change. Enjoy! Or, more accurately (given 13K), continue to enjoy!

    Re: Have the same problem

oh i m jealous of road trips!! Take care Holmi!

    Re: Have the same problem

Thanks Dilinger! Made it safe and sound to Staunton, Virginia to join up with a convoy of Porsches, etc., heading down to Blowing Rock tomorrow. Here's a picture of my beauty bedding down with the little red car. Hmm, I gotta find some Scotch tonight. The last stretch of Route 20 before Charlottesville was a lot of fun (mild twists and turns...good enough before tomorrow's fun on the Blue Ridge Parkway)!
