Chris Harris (Autocar) on who will buy the Cayman

I'm not sure that the Cayman S will attract that many Audi TT owners - the price difference being the main factor. When the base Cayman eventually comes out, then I can see a lot more TT drivers making the switch.

thanks for the scan! much appreiciated, the cayman is nice, but i won't buy one for myself

    I would!!!

Re: Chris Harris (Autocar) on who will buy the Cayman

Yes I agree. I bought a Boxster because I love the way it drives not because it's a convertible. Frankly, I only put the top down maybe 5 - 10 times/year here in sunny California. I don't really like convertibles. If the Cayman was available 4 years ago I would have certainly paid more and bought it instead of a Boxster.

It may or may not be true but..

I am buying a Cayman in the UK instead of a 997.
I think the price asked in the UK for the 997 is just too high.
So I am "downgrading" to the Cayman.
I am happy to spend Pounds45k for a car but not Pounds60k.
Probably exactly what Porsche does not want to happen.

Re: It may or may not be true but..

I can relate to Chris Harris' article very well, I myself started with a MK4 Golf GTi when I graduated from college (1999) and had enjoyed Golf ownership for 2 years but felt even though it was solidly built/great residuals/good looks the drive in retrospect was a dissapointment.

Then 2 years on when I was looking to upgrade, I testdrove a TT 225 and thought I had to have one, not for the drive in all honesty but badge and design...until I took a detour to a Lotus dealer and took an Elise S2 out for a testdrive and was blown away by the feedback and immediacy of the car so the 'driver' inside me was born and from then on only promised myself I would only buy real driver's cars so the deal for the Elise was struck.

Fast forward another 2 years and graduated next to an E46 M3 where I was introduced to another level of motoring, although the M3 is not as great on the twisties in the UK as the Lotus, the M3 straight six is one of the great engines and as an overall package it was much better car than the Elise.

Throughout my Elise and M3 ownership, I ran a trusty Polo TDi for getting into work etc and since I sold the M3 last year I'm looking to upgrade to a 996 TT/GT3/GT2. While the Cayman is kinda growing on me I have to say instead of making the jump to the Cayman, I'm sticking to the original plan of getting a 996.

And the reason not wanting a Cayman? Besides having less grunt than the M3, the Cayman is not rear-engined which endows the evergreen 911 with that specialness you won't get in any other Porsche.

    Just my 2cents

If you guys want to grill me for my above statements then bring it on

Re: It may or may not be true but..

Blimey - that Autocar article reflects exactly my car history except that I had an Audi A3 1.8T instead of the Golf. I even upgraded from my TT225 to a TT3.2 but sold the car after 6 months to buy a 997....

Re: It may or may not be true but..

Really hit home with me also as I have owned a '95 VR6 GTI and Audi 225HP TT in the past. Never have been without a Porsche during all that time though. The GTI and TT are long gone now, but I have waited long for a new Porsche type replacement. Along the way I have sampled many different makes including some Japanese.....while all were nice, none had any soul whatsoever and were no more reliable than their German counterparts. I'm still waiting on more details until I'm sold on the Cayman, but it does seem a bit in my destiny.

Re: It may or may not be true but..

Skipped the TT (although I test drove it) I went from a Golf GTI to a 911

Re: It may or may not be true but..

Thank you soo much for the scans !! ,, the article is great ,, !

Re: It may or may not be true but..

Thanks for the article. My car history is more humble than those above, but did start with two polos then two golfs, a TT and a cooper. As to the cayman, deposit paid, but mind changes on a weekly basis.

My sentiments exactly. I bought my Boxster back in '99, not because it was a roadster, but because it was a beautiful design and a blast to drive. I probably put the top down once a week at most during my five years of ownership (and I'm in sunnier Los Angeles!) and never really enjoyed being so "exposed" in a covertible. I guess I'm a coupe guy at heart and would have bought the Cayman back in '99 in a heartbeat over the Boxster.

Re: It may or may not be true but..

Me too..... I had a golf GTI , a few year later , in 1999, I got an AUDI TT that I still own and now I am looking at the 997. If my budget would be smaller I definitevely would go for the Cayman...

Re: It may or may not be true but..

    Did GOLF III GTI -> Audi A3 180hp turbo -> BMW 330ci -> Boxster S...but then I see the next step -> 997 - not cayman...
Funny how many people follow the same path ~more or less :-)

Re: It may or may not be true but..

Seeing as we are all baring our souls..

    1977 VW Beetle -> 1997 Renault Megane Coupe 16v -> 2001 Boxster S -> 2005 Boxster S

People who thought the Cayman would be a cheaper way to get on the Porsche ladder may not be happy, but I still think there are plenty of people that will got for a Cayman. As some of these posts show, not everyone wants a convertible, but many people here seem to have the view that the only reason people get a Coupe is if they cant afford the convertible

Re: It may or may not be true but..

A friend of mine was looking to buy a P lately. He wansn' t convinced with the rear 911 engine + he found it too expensive. He liked the Boxster's middle engine but dindn't care for the convertible. He called me yesterday saying that now he has found what he was looking for. The CAYMAN ! Middle engine + coupé ! ( still finds it a bit too expensive, but he eventualy will make the extra cash effort) He now owns a Golf RS 32.....

Same position I'm in at the moment. I like the 997, but its pretty pricy and I like mid-engine better. Don't want a drop-top.....so this is a car I've been waiting for.

Re: It may or may not be true but..

Interesting. I have had all the cars he mentioned, but I started off with a 325ci. Then had a TT 225 Quattro, and am now waiting for a Golf GTI. So I guess I have kinda gone backwards. Then again, I also have a Boxster S, and somewhere amongst all the other cars mentioned I have also had a 996 and a Mini Cooper S. Guess some of us potential Cayman buyer just don't follow the typical path set out by the marketing type out there.
