who got boxster and boxster s?

just wondering how many people have gotten a boxster or a boxster s?..

it seems most people got the S...

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

Yeah, it's an enthusiast site, so the natural bias is for the S. However, even the standard Boxster has abilities that are perhaps beyond many of the posters, myself included.

Waiting for my S to arrive...

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

I got an S, half for the financial reasons (the S is Pounds8k more than the standard car, and I would have added Pounds4k worth of options to the base car anyway that the S had standard, and you don't tend to recoup the price of the options so much when re-selling)...

Actually the above was how I rationalised it. The real reason is that I drove the S. Bad mistake if you're on a budget! Couldn't wipe the grin off my face afterwards.

But you probably wouldn't regret the 2.7 at all. Both are great cars, and the fuel economy of the 2.7 is slightly better.

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

Oh, and another reason for the S - There's quite a few boy-racer-mobiles (and BMWs) that could think they would stand a chance against the 2.7. With the S, hopefully they wouldn't bother. Probably irrational thought, but another reason I pushed myself up to the S.

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

Originally ordered the 2.7 but in the end had to go for the S even though I was stretching myself a bit financially...

Like wtsnet, I was worried that the 2.7 was a bit underpowered compared to many other cars out there now...

I'm sure the 2.7 is still a great a car though, but I'm soo glad I took the S

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

It's not just a question of being an enthusiast or not.
In some countries (like Denmark) and for some people, the price diff does matter a whole lot.
In Denmark the price difference (987) is appr. 40.000 USD. Yes, a standard 987 non-S will run you appr. 180,000 $.

Oh, I looooove telling wondrous stories from our neck of the woods

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

Drove the S yesterday on the track. There just isnt that much difference. This isn't 'cos I couldnt afford the S (just my bank manager and accountant would have a fit) but in my opinion the standard S is a fantastic car and I'm very happy with mine.

I'm sure loads of you will disagree but that was my impression after driving both back to back.

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

    I've owned two 986 non-S-es and now own a 986 S. I will never ever go S-less
But everybody should make up their own mind

I agree with you - way too many BMW 330's trying to race Boxster bases - I could never tolerate being burned by a BMW 3-Series from a standstill and it won't happen with the S model except the M3, but hopefully the new Revo ECU unit can help...as Porsche says - Porsche cars don't win from raw power they do it by outhandling, out maneuvering and outsmarting the competition..

More reasons for the S? It's more exclusive - far less buyers for an S (yes, $10,000 US will do that), nice red brake calipers to distinguish you, standard 6 speed tranny, a meatier exhaust as a result from a more powerful engine...I see it as a better buy for me, but it's different for everyone. I will pay 10,000 more for a better product and exclusivity - you on the other hand, may not.

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

In an article from the Dec,8 2004 of Canadian Auto Press by Trevor Homann.
A comparison of a 986, 986S and 987, 987S at the old Nurburging race track shows the following times.

    2004 986 8 min 42 sec.
    2004 986S 8 min 27 sec.

    2005 987 8 min 31 sec
    2005 987S 8 min 18 sec.

For all saying they would ONLY go from a 986S to a 987S, please note going from a 986S to a base 987 you would have lost almost Nothing...is it REALLY worth the extra $$? In the real world, I doubt it.I think you feel you must....

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

lets make it clear, these cars are too expensive for what they are worth...porsche is not into cars they are into money...in my own opinion they should only have 1 engine i n each model which means: boxster= 280hp 6 speed, 911= 355hp, gt3-380+ hp, etc...cayman=280hp 5k less than boxster s you get my point...forget exclusivity porsche produces almost as much boxster than honda do s2000!

Please see attached study on exclusivity as conducted by the Luxury Institute
    http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/03/21/016837.html

And take your comment about the Boxsters and the S2000's - even though the production #'s are comparable - the overall production of Porsche models as compared to Honda models is unbelievably small in comparison. Ask an average person what they think when they hear Porsche (yes it's expensive, and if you can't afford the cost of entry well, that's too bad, go buy a Civic and get 37 miles on the gallon) and when you hear Honda - no comparison, only comparable when putting model production numbers side by side - but in terms of price and exclusivity, no contest.

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

I'd rather have the choice, thanks all the same. Part of the pleasure of buying and owning a Porsche is configuring your car how YOU want it. If there are no options to choose from, where's the pleasure in that?

And lap times are just one method of comparison, but they don't necessarity directly represent how those cars compare in the full range of day-to-day on-road driving conditions. You've got to ultimately test-drive the car to make sure it suits what you're going to do with it.

But you wouldn't have GAINed anything either!

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

I went from a 2000 986S to a new 987 2.7 and am completely satisfied with the switch. As far as I can tell, there is no perceptable difference in acceleration or braking between the two cars. I resisted spending the extra Pounds on the S as I only use my Boxster at weekends and couldn't justify spending any more. If it was an everyday car, then I'd probably end up getting the S (or more likely a Cayman S).

I've not tried a manual 987S yet (don't want to know what I'm missing), but I did a test drive plus in a Tiptronic S, and that seemed slower than my manual 2.7.

That's why I got the base (986). The base is so good, the S only incrementally better, IMHO. It's not a big jump from base to S, like it might be if you were going from the Boxster (base or S) to a 911.

I wish I made enough money so I could say $10,000 is nothing gained !!! I'm afraid you've missed the point

No, you've missed mine. Why spend $40,000 moving from a 986S to a 987 to 'lose almost nothing'. I'd rather spend an extra $10,000 to get a car with more standard options that I'd want, and more power to future-proof against power-hikes that are probably going to come in over the course of the 987's run.

If you were equally tight when you originally bought the 986S you would have got the 2.5 instead, and now no-one would want one.

If you wanted to save money, you'd stick with the 986S!

Yup I agree. If I was spending Pounds45k on a car I would prefer a 911 as it's a much bigger price diffference. I think that's what I would go for next as although I like the extra torque of the S I would prefer a bit extra.

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

S here as the choice was between a used 911 and a new Boxster S. The base version is nice, no doubt, but I've been driving an Audi TT 225 for years and wanted a bigger step up.

Re: who got boxster and boxster s?

Got the 'S' Wasn't in the market for new one so price difference not the prime driver. Drove standard and the 'S' and just felt that the 'S' was a better buy for me. Each to his/her own.
