    radar detector advice

    hi all,

i am in ny for a few days and was thinkink to buy a radar detector.but have no idea what to buy.

any help or suggestions are really appreciated.
    thanks in advance.

    Re: radar detector advice

For a quick buy get a Passport8500 X50. You can get one at Best Buy electronics stores. $299. Everyone will tell you to get a ValentineOne but you have to order that over the net and it's $400 plus shipping. Good luck.

    Re: radar detector advice

Got both 8500 and V1. Prefer the V1 because the directional arrows come in handy. Too bad V1 is so cheap looking;bulky and odd-shaped, no LEDs just some leaky plasticky indicator lenses.

    Re: radar detector advice

    Don't buy in US.
It doesn't work in Europe. (band or frequency used in Europe are different)

    Re: radar detector advice

The V1 lets you change the freq.s for Europe and North America.

    Re: radar detector advice

laser echo, is what most P car people use here...

    Re: radar detector advice

The V1s here are tuned for local use, probably best to buy at home. V1's best I've used...

    Re: radar detector advice

Check out some country specific info. It really does depend on what the police use where you are.

I am in Northern England. Up here most speed traps are static. Thus a GPS detector would suit that best. Hand held radar guns are becoming increasingly rare. And I am informed that it is highly unlikely that I would ever be caught using a handheld radar gun. Almost all UK forces now have guns which would only be detectable with a laser detector.

Then again, if a laser hits you, then you're got! So not much use in detecting it. I settled for a standard GPS detector (with a radar add-on). As expected, it has not found any radar traps in the six months I have been using it.

As I say, the most suitable device is very country specific. It all comes down to what your local police are using!

My wife ans I both have Valentineone. Very impressive for the price.

    Re: radar detector advice

Which detector is best for the German Autobahn? Thanks for more informations.

    Greetings

    Re: radar detector advice

    Phoenix,
Depends, do you want a windshield mount type detector? or a remote install detector (antenna is installed behind front bumper concealed and a very small removable display/acustic unit hidden inside the cabin)?

It depends on which system is more reliable. I never thought about a radar- or laserdetector, because here in Germany the useage is not allowed.

It might be good, if not everbody from outside can see the detector.

    Re: radar detector advice

If you are worried about the detcetor being seen from the outside then I suggest a remote install detector, in that case for Germany I suggest the Bel 966R (a.k.a. Stinger Vector Europa or Target EVO). Its designed for Europe and picks up all the frecuencies used in Germany (34,3GHZ narrow Ka-band, 24,125GHz K-band and 13,4GHz Ku-band).

Last I heard, in Germany the "use" of radar detectors is ilegal but the "posesion" of them is not (just like in Spain). I.e. they can fine you if they catch you "using" one but not because of owning one. So if they find a radar detector in your glove compartment they can't fine for that unless they caught you using it which is very hard for them to do if they can't see it while you are driving unless they are using a Spectre radar detector detector device which is rare (I only know of them in Holland and other countries were trafiic law enforcement is very opressive, over there just "onwing" a radar detector is ilegal not only using it) and not easy for them to pick out the car within the traffic.

Anyway here in Spain the fine for using one is Euro 90, I'd rather pay that than loose my license. But I use the Bel 966R so I'm not worried about being caught either, since if I'm ever stopped I will just hide the display unit so not a problem.

i get INFORAD, which works in France, Benelux, Germany and UK. It's a GPS system (legal) that let you know when you enter in a static radar area and if you drive faster than the authorized speed. It updates on a website the new localizations of static radars. It works perfectly, its legal, it has already saved much money for me, but it doesn't avoid you to stay vigilant for the mobile police units !
