    I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

    Hey guys,

I'm going to need some of your opinions on this one...
I was at my Ferrari dealer the other day and as I walked in there was an F40 on the showroom floor! It is for sale too!! The problem is the price, $500,000 1989 F40(with Le Mans Kit), with 11250miles/18000kms on the clock.

What I want to know is... do you think the value of the car will go up even though the odometer's numbers are rising? Do they even still keep spare parts for these cars anymore?! Obviously it's LHD, which would suck in a RHD country... I won't really drive this car much either, will just be in the garage for satisfaction!

The other option is a 1999 F355 GTS, with 15625miles/25000km on the clock. It's price tag is $200,000 more or less.

    A) Buy a legend and keep it in the garage.
    B) Buy a cheaper Ferrari(I've always like the GTS), and actually drive it around?

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

I vote for option C.) Buy the F40 and drive it at track days. There are two F40's that show up for track days here in Colorado and they look like a blast to drive. The F355 is a nice car too, but the F40 makes it pale in comparison.

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

The F40 price will not rise by that much. It was a very large production run by comparison to the GTO, F50, or Enzo and the particular one you are interested in has a decent amount of miles on it. It will be harder to maintain than a 355 because of the age of the car and the additional engine complexity of a turbo motor.

On a personal note (as someone who has spent a fair amount of time in and around several F40s of different varieties) I find it a bit disheartening that you intend to buy one of the most envigorating and visceral road cars available just to sit it in your garage.

It sounds financially and practically like you'd do better to get the 355 (also an awesome car) which you can drive more often in addition to the fact that you already appear to own a very fast, lightweight track-special type of car (Noble) which is essentially what the F40 is as well...

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

yes, grant but one can't compare like in the US, the problem here is like I said, do they still even make parts for it anymore? we don't really have track days here, maybe one or two a year, and i wouldn't race it around the track and risk it being damaged, there is NOBODY here that can fix carbon fibre damages...

Perfect solution! I vote for that too. Its a "pure" sportcar, designed for track conditions and unadulterated raw sportcar experience with little compromise for the street compared to its sequels or other Ferraris.

The F40... the best Ferrari of all time IMO.

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

    there is no comparison !!
If I could, I would go for the F4O for sure !
Maybe the price of the F40 will not go up, but the price of the 355 will sure go DOWN a lot (how is it possible that a 355 costs 200k ) ...fwww, this is crazy !

So you like oil with your art?

Maybe since you have the ability to have $400K just sit in a shed, you should use that capital to buy 100 hectares
somehwere there and build a 2-3km long private road to
    enjoy your cars on.

welcome to South african car prices on exotics patriek
that's exactly why i can't decide, $500,000 is a $#^%$ for a car which i'm not going to drive often! plus i'd rather spend $200k on a f355 (which i've always liked) and that i'll actually drive how fast does a f355's value drop on average per year?

@Jimflat6: lol! we have got tracks here, just not many track days, it's not like we drive around on a dirt road track lol!!! tarmac has somehow managed to find it's way here in deep darkest africa

can someone please answer the question if parts are still available for the f40? otherwise i'm going to have to pester my dealer again

Mike - Any parts would be available for a price. Ferrari makes alot of money selling these parts (I would think most are still available) and there are some wrecked F40's that pop up occasionally for used parts. Driving an F40 on the street is no safer than driving one on the track (if you drive within your limits). I thought there was an old F1 track down there (Kyalami or something like that) where you could drive it. Is there a Ferrari club there?

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

Mike - one other thing. Are you living at high altitude? IIRC, Johanesburg is very high up (don't know where you live) - around 8k ft. At that altitude, an F355 would be making around 290hp and an F40 (twin turbos) would be making its full 478hp - and the F40 is alot lighter - quite a ride

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

yes kyalami is about 20 miles away from where I live there is a ferrari club, but they're not very active unfortunately. there is 1 other track called Zwartkops raceway also rather nearby. this is going to be a tough decision, the dealer said this is only the 2nd F40 to have been forsale in the country... thanks a lot for your tips guys, i will be able to make a much better decision now that i'm better informed!

Where is the problem if you have the 500k? The F40 value is very unlikely to depreciate substantially. I.e. buying an F40 is just an investment not consumption.

What you will be actually consuming is the maintenance cost, which in the case of an F40 is far above the usual Ferrari level.

BTW, Carlos is right: the F40 is the king of all super sports cars. It does 0-300 as quick as the Carrera GT

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

It's the maintenance that's worrying me I think it through the whole way before I make a decision, let's not forget i have to muster out another $500k at the end of the year for the F430 spider and the F40 was there by chance!! now i can't decide and i've already put down the deposit on the spider!

if you get the F40, please use it on the track, dont let it sit in the garage!!! The 355 GTS maybe totally fine, go for that... or maybe a 360 CS!

There is an individual by the name of Alex who posts on Ferrarichat.com. He owns a F40 and a CGT. You might want to communicate with him. He has stated the F40 gives him more of a thrill to drive compared to the CGT. It is a raw unvarnished super sport car.

Additionally I cannot imagine there are too many F40 in S. Africa. Thus resale value probably will hold up.

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

nick, i'm surprised you didn't tell him to get the 430 since it's easier to drive fast

Some of us need help. Besides, he is on the list to get one.

BTW the comment regarding the F40 to the CGT was not meant as a knock against the CGT which is clearly the better car. If the choice was between a CGT and F40 I would pick the CGT in a nanosecond.

no knock taken. the CGT is a better car. however, the single purposeness of F40 is second to none - including the CGT. it's as raw as you're gonna get.

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

"If the choice was between a CGT and F40 I would pick the CGT in a nanosecond."

Better? Newer, certainly. Faster on track. More practical. But better? What I most want and value is single purposeness, absolute rawness, so for me the F40 is by far the better car. I'm not knocking the CGT, either, the CGT is just magnificent, who would argue otherwise? But I'm looking at F40s, and haven't even considered the Porsche. To each, his own, as always.

Mike, I'd choose the F40 in a heartbeat; the 355 is a wonderful car with a brilliant exhaust note, but the F40 is a not insignificant part of the history of the marque. I'd buy it and track it.

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

my bank account is gonna cry i'm going to go speak to the dealer to see if maybe i can get a better deal on it let you know how it goes

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

    yeah!

Ferrari UK produces most parts of Ferrari cars out of production.

    SO, go for it!

    Best, Floren.

    How about both?

OK, not too much thought in this, but a wild idea.

Buy the 355 in SA, and use it to your hearts content.
Buy the F40 in the UK, or similar, where prices are cheaper (a LOT cheaper ~Pounds125k, US$200k(not LM version though) and use the 'remaining' $100k to travel to UK (or other locale), store it and track it. OK, UK's a bit far but you get my drift....

OK, it early, so this may be a load of Pounds$%$$.....

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

Get the F40 but don't let it sit in the garage, you're clearly a sport car enthousiast with all the right cars (Noble, 911, SL for cruising, etc.).
The 355 is the best sounding Ferrari ever and arguably the prettiest, it's a classic, but it's no F40!

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

not sure what you need a 355 for if you are getting a 430? Hell if you have the money get the F40 and drive the thing. In my mind one of the alltime greats...

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

in my opinion ,the smart choice is the 430 ,after you take its delivery you wont even drive the 355 . so in my opinion go for the f40 if you really want to play...

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

WOWWOWOWOW!!!! , those prices are "crazy"!!!!!

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

I think you should just buy a Lamborghini

i don't want to wait, plus i've always liked the 355, and many seem to agree (along with me ) that it is the best sounding ferrari ever!

@boytronic: the service you get from lamborghini here is rubbish, so i won't be buying from them anytime soon

pic from their website, i'll go take some photo's of it on the weekend

    Re: I can't decide, F40 or F355 GTS?

Well, if the Lambo service is bad they lose a customer - buy the F40 instead, I reckon it'd be much more fun than the 355 (which does sound beautiful though)!
