The 350Z is a front-engined heavy pig of a car. It is several hundred pounds heavier with crappy brakes.

Re: It is funny how people...

sorry you must misunderstand that i talk about the 350z 35th anniversary wich cary everything AND BREMBO BRAKES

Do you own a CGT and Stradale, as it says in your profile? Thought you'd be less concerned about the money!

The Boxster S has a superior setup the the 350Z out of the box, much better interior, makes better sounds, etc. Drove the Nissan out of curiosity and while it's pretty capable for the price, I just didn't enjoy it. That can't be said of my Boxster experience (even standard Boxster, non-S). If you are after performance numbers, you can't get well similarly performing cars for far less than $200k for the Stradale and track cars costing far less than the CGT. There must be some other criteria that makes them worth the purchase. Similar story on the 350Z vs Boxster/Cayman.

Completely different market IMO. Very people consider both cars.

We all work hard for our money, but it's better to spend a little extra to get what you really want than be unhappy with something less. If a 350Z does it for you, then congratulations....you just saved a ton of money.

Don't mean to offend, that's just how I view it.

PS: My Merc has Brembo brakes, but that doesn't mean they don't fade like hell when driven hard.

Re: It is funny how people...

Lets see how it drives before we judge..The word is it does the "Ring" in 8:11. I don't know if thats true, but if it its..

Even the anniverary version drives like a pig on the track.

I NEVER said that Porsche wants to test people's reaction to a possible 911 successor, I said that Porsche doesn't seem to like it that the 911 is viewed as THE Porsche and they want something to challenge the reputation and tradition of the 911.
People got the lightweight mid engined car they expected? The Boxster is much lighter, so please enlighten me. The performance difference between the Boxster S and the Cayman S is ridiculous, the advantage on the track comes mainly from a stiffer chassis. And it is funny when I hear people talking about the Boxster and the 911 on the track. I don't know many people who can be REALLY fast in a Boxster on the track, simply because the mid engine setup requires very good driving skills. It is easier to be fast in the 911.
So it doesn't help people much if Walter Röhrl is a few seconds faster in the Cayman S compared to the same Walter Röhrl in a 997 Carrera because simply said: nobody can really drive a Cayman the way he does, he helped develop this thing.

I dont know how many times I heard on this Board that most people are faster in a Boxster because it's easier to drive. I guess things change when the Cayman S and its ring came out.

...but a Boxster with a fixed roof, a nice rear hatch and a slightly "better" engine. What is wrong with that?

that the fixed roof is way too bulky and that the grilled air inlets and the fog lights make it look aftermarket.

time for a corrective action in photoshop:

Now THAT is what it should have looked like to begin with.
The roofline is a little too low for actual headroom, but the profile is beautiful. Well done!

Re: It is funny how people...

Yes, the modified roofline looks very good indeed (if a little disproportional). No doubt at the expense of headroom.

But I've noticed that you've made it look more like an AMV8! Too bad Aston scrapped their mid-engine plans.

Re: It is funny how people...

..but with the roofline modified, you cannot call it a Cayman anymore. Have you looked closely at the shape of a Cayman's head ( the real one, the reptile!!) ?
    It would be called Lezard...

Re: It is funny how people...

I think the curve of the roof matches the curve of the rear fenders.......

Re: It is funny how people...

    Now that's nice!

Re: It is funny how people...

It seems to me that Porsche is just trying to broaden their market in sales, hence the Cayenne in order to keep up with the SUV market, and the boxster, plus the now Cayman to provide a more affordable Porsche to the population. I don't know why, but when I see the pictures of the Cayman, it reminds of what a wealthy/spoiled college kid might drive... I could be wrong with my visual of this, as many times it is hard to get a total opinion from a picture, and without actually driving it.

In regard to replacing the 911? The 911 is a classic, will always be a classic, and in my opinion can never be replaced. Even if they stopped making the 911 altogether, the 911 still hold it's own. The Cayman is just a new model of the Porsche line...

But in the end a Cayman S laps the ring faster than a 997(Im not surprised). I think its more than a rich college kid car. I think this car has to be driven before it's judged. I know I will be testing one out... The 911 prestige doesn't apply to me and yes I own one. I like GOOD performing cars. Specifically Porsches

I really should be more careful about adding quotes to what I am replying to... sorry about that. When talking about the 911 being a classic, I was referring to:

    Quote:
DRA said: It could be the beginning of the end for the 911. I know there are going to be lots of people disagreeing with me, but I think Porsche are testing the waters...

I disagreed with DRA's comment, and was saying that even if his comment were correct, the 911 always will be a classic no matter what. Hopefully that will clear up any misunderstandings here. As far as prestige is concerned, it hadn't even entered my mind.

And yes, I agree that nothing can be judged from a picture... and that is why I said:

    Quote:
Jenna said: I could be wrong with my visual of this, as many times it is hard to get a total opinion from a picture, and without actually driving it.

I happen to like the what I have seen so far with the Cayman. And, I bet it will be a good seller too.

I will be more careful to add a quote when posting a reply here so others do not misunderstand my comments...

Couldn't have said it better myself, and if we are all well off enough to buy a Porsche, any Porshce, we're all rich kids (no matter how old) by most of the worlds standards.

Re: It is funny how people...

So the Cayman S laps the 'ring faster than a 997?
How do we know? We don't, it is only a rumor, possibly just Porsche marketing spin to promote the new model.
And if it does? So what? How many 997 or Cayman owners will ever even be within 100 miles of the 'ring?
Most will be just like me, trundling along most of the time at 55 mph plus a bit or 65 plus a bit (or whatever the local speed limit is, plus a bit), dodging the cameras and the police radar. The sad fact is that, on average, I drive faster in my Honda Accord or BMW X3 than in my 997 or my M3. Because the Accord and X3 are pretty much anonymous and I can get away with it.
So, whilst I have a Cayman S on order, the fact that somebody tells me that it laps the 'ring faster than a 997 just makes me yawn. Even Cadillac claims to use the 'ring for product development these days. Just wait until they plant the story that the new Cadillac XYZ is "faster around the 'ring than a Porsche Turbo".
    Don't laugh, it will happen!
