    Steering precision issue.

I ve read reviews describing the steering, as razor sharp.
In fact, i do not share this opinion.

I find the steering not as precise as i was expecting

YES, i admit, during cornering, it is razor sharp and gives you a very confident feeling.

BUT when driving in staight road, and decide to do some quick lane change or correction of course, i find that it lacks a precise feeling.

Could that be due to the higher tire profiles of my 18 Carrera III wheels?

Would this feeling be eliminated if i go for 19 " wheels?

    Anyone else sharing my opinion?
    Especially base 997 owners?

    Re: Steering precision issue.

I felt exactly the same when I first drove my 987S (coming from a base 986).

I haven't yet found a final answer but there are somethings that might explain that feeling I got when first started to drive the car:

    1) Front tire size. I was used to smaller front tire sizes (205 before, 235 now).
    2) Tire brand. Mine came with Conti SportContact 2 and I had PilotSport's on the 986.
    3) Variable steering. At low speeds you seem to need to turn the steering wheel more to get the car to turn the same as my 986. It's the price to pay for a lighter steering wheel when parking the car.

    Re: Steering precision issue.

I think the steering on my 996 with 18 inch wheels IS razor sharp including during aggressive lane changes - even REALLY aggressive maneuvers. Could it be that you are reaching the point where the variable ratio steering kicks in and this is throwing your precision off, or is it less of an issue of placement (ie. placing the car exactly where you want) versus tactile road feel?

    Re: Steering precision issue.

Dilinger, what kind of tires do you have? What pressure setting are you using?

    Re: Steering precision issue.

Holminator, it is very strange but

MY TIRES ARE BRIDGESTONE POTENZA ES..something

i ve never seen a 997 with these tires

i use recomended pressures written on the sticker

    front: 37
    rear: 46

    Re: Steering precision issue.

I just took delivery of my 997S. I also own a Lotus Elise and have owned a 986S. Coming from an Elise and a Boxster, the 997S does lack a bit of precision, but relative to other cars it is ultra-precise. I agree that the active steering may contribute to a little vagueness at high speeds when traveling straight. I loved my 986S and my Lotus (which I'm selling); they are smaller, tighter cars -- esp. the Lotus. Still, neither compare to the 997.

    Re: Steering precision issue.

Steering is not active steering, its just a variable ratio steering, at the center (in straight line) the ratio is the same as the previous 996, it just gets tighter in the corners at you close the angle, but its not speed dependent.

That can give some surprises when cornering fast all of a sudden...I didn't expect the car to react so quick and sharp...
A bit later on... when coming on a straight road I almost bumped into the back of the car in front off me, because, while flooring the throttle to pass that car, my steering reacted less agressive than expected and I had to overreact on the wheel for not hitting the car in front... The steering needs a little attention in the beginning..

    Re: Steering precision issue.

i just think that in straight roads and fast lane changes the steering is not at all razor sharp.but this might be to the high profile tires of the 18"
