    NAV system owners HELP

Program in an address that you know its location on a block

Select the Map (choose show destination if needed)

Is the location accurately shown on the map? or off ?

If the address is on a E/W street please check East and West of the location.

Your results are very much appreciated

    Re: NAV system owners HELP

It took my system about a month to become accurate. At first, it thought I lived down the street about 200 yards away. Now, it's right on the money. I think I read somewhere that the system takes some time to get calibrated. Not sure if that is correct, though.

    Re: NAV system owners HELP

Yes it does take time to recallibrate....In fact there is a menu choice in the PCM to reset the system...Typically this is done when you change tires, also if the car has been transported etc.
The NAV has some significant shortcomings though...You have to know the City that the street you are looking for is in (which can be a pain in somewhere like LA). It doesn't tell you if your destination is on the left or right side of the street. The arrow head is way too big relative to the scale of the map.It doesn't give you the name of the upcoming street in map mode & the graphics look like something from an 1980's Atari game

    Re: NAV system owners HELP

One thing thay annoyed me with the PCM-II nav in my previous 986S was the fact that you had to use the name of the town. In some countries there can be many town's with the same name, why not give the users the option to use zip codes which are much more precise and in large cities narrow the street range down dramatically. Has this become an option with the latest version ?

    Re: NAV system owners HELP

How can a GPS system need calibration?? Never heard of that. Can it be because the PCM not only uses GPS signal but information from the wheels (distance etc.)

    Re: NAV system owners HELP

The accuracy of any GPS system is dependent on the number of satellites in line-of-sight of your vehicle's antenna. There are times when there are only 2 or 3 satellites in view. The fewer the number of satellites that the system can access, the less accurate your positional fix will be. Most GPS units include a count of how many satellites are being accessed, but alas our Porsche system does not have that feature.

    Our system has that feature.....
If you select the STATUS menu selection it will give you how many satellites are being accessed, altitude as well as Latitude & Longitude position

From my understanding (and I admit that I have not RTFM recently) the information on distance travelled based on road wheel rotation is only used as a backup in tunnels or other situations where the PCM does not pick up a GPS satellite signal. It would not account for errors when sats are "in view".

    Re: NAV system owners HELP

hmmh...still does not explain this calibration concept. Having read GPS's specs I don't remember such a concept. And as for number of sats, 3 sats won't give errors of 200 yards. I have never seen such a problem with mine. This sounds really strange...This is why I introduced the idea of the distance information. Maybe still a side effect. In certain conditions it *might* assumre it is in a tunnel while it's not...who knows :-)
