I was able to "forgive" the 996/986 headlights since as the story goes (I think I read it in the car mags of the 996 era), Porsche had to reduce costs of those cars to survive. The one-piece slide-in features of those units  made them less expensive to build and therefore contributed to the success and survival of Porsche at the time.

If real-life cost or manufacturing practicalities contribute to the look of design features I guess that's okay. Form following function is good.   At least they have this kind of "pull together" shape for the front , which is kind of interesting.
