New Car Design

can someone comment on why it seems that all new cars are coming out with very pronounced and completely unstylized front and rear fender bulges, as if it were desinged by the guy who design the Chevy "duelie" pick up truck.

The M3 has this style, as does the A6 and A8, Audis new SUV also has it.

To me it seems completely out of character of any sedan but there must be something to it, if every sedan designer is using this?

WTF is it for?

For a sportier look. Racecar versions of the streetcars have widened wheel arches in order to accomodate the wider wheel/tires still within the body. Just like the extra grills and larger intakes that racecasrs need are transfered onto street cars for the sportier look.

The only info I have seen about the hideous trend in exagerated grills and wheel arches was from an Audi executive who said that such styling cues would help
them in the Asian market, wich is now very large.

Its like car makers looked at a 49 Ford, dropped some bad acid and ran to their drawing boards, er...CAD stations.

Ironically, this bulbous, useless and cartoon like Euro Asian design trend is ignored by American automakers.

Seems like the trunk lid buldge is starting to make it into other cars besides BMWs as well. I noted an Acura RL today with a slightly raised trunk!

I really dont like the direcion car companies, in general, are going with styling. The new Mercedes designs seem to have no clear lines and most car companies are doing something different just to be different. What happens with this "different" trend is not popular anymore? One company I am not pleased with in the styling aspect is Audi. I think their new 'bucked tooth look' for the front grill is horrible. Its frustrating to see IMHO.
