997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

    Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

Porsche Cars GB has re-affirmed its long-term commitment to British motorsport by unveiling the car that will be used in the Carrera Cup GB for at least the next three years. The all-new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (Type 997) will be introduced in the 2006 Carrera Cup and continue for 2007 and 2008 in a new three-year programme.

The existing model (Type 996) has been used in the Carrera Cup GB since the championship was introduced in 2003. The new model was officially unveiled at a reception at Porsche Cars Reading on the evening of Saturday 30 April.

Since it first supported the British Touring Car Championship in 2003, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB has become firmly established as the fastest single marque racing series on the UK's premier national motorsport calendar. The combination of evocative sports coupe styling and characteristic rear-engine design makes the Porsche 911 a favourite for drivers seeking a precisely engineered, powerful race car, and one that is immediately recognisable by spectators and sponsors alike.

The next evolution of the Carrera Cup GB will build on this proven reputation and continue to offer competitors the same high level of support from Porsche Cars GB. An extensive prize fund, excellent technical support, race centre hospitality, championship management, TV coverage and media services will all continue to underpin the Porsche Carrera Cup GB.

    The engine
The engine is the well-known 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer that has been the base for successful motorsport with near-standard vehicles for the last six years. It is an extremely free-revving unit that develops 400 HP (294 kW) at 7300 rpm. The maximum torque is 400 Nm at 6500 rpm. An air-collector located under the rear wing uses pressure built up there to supply extra intake air to the engine at high speeds, so that it reaches its maximum power output even more easily.

    Bodywork
High downforce, low weight and the best possible cooling had priority when the classical body silhouette of the 911 was modified for racing. The adjustable rear wing of the new GT3 Cup gives a clear indication of the purpose of this vehicle. The carbon fibre wing is 2.34 inches wider and 1.37 inches higher than the wing of the 2004 911 GT3 Cup model. It increases downforce at the rear significantly. An intake on the carbon fiber rear lid directs air through a filter directly to the throttle.

The cockpit and dashboard feature a new layout with a central information display which informs the driver about all important functions. The light and ignition switches as well as the data recording control are positioned on the centre console with the starter button left of the steering wheel. The fuse-box can now be found in the place of the glove-box instead in the legroom area of the driver's side.

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

    Sequential 6-speed gearbox
The sequential six-speed dog-type box of the latest 911 GT3 Cup features a power shift system with ignition cut for very quick upshifting at full throttle. Very close ratios ensure that the engine is used in its optimum rev range with the transmission being considerably shorter than in the road-going 911 GT3 RS. Top speed is reached at approx. 169 mph. Thanks to tailor-made gears, a single mass flywheel and the use of a 5.5 inch triple-disc sintered metal clutch, the rotating masses of the transmission are reduced. An oil-water-heat exchanger provides the reliable cooling of the system.

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

    Thanks - Looks nice!

Is this good evidence that the 997 GT3 street car will also use a 3.6 instead of a bigger 3.8 dry sump block...?!

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

Looks Great-Definate step up in appearance from the 996 cup

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

I thought that they were going to put PCCB- but the red calipers doesn's seem like that

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

is the sequential shifter on the tunnel or F1 style by the steering wheel? Thanks

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

    boytronic,
In the 996 the Cup car had basically the same engine as the street version so it has been that way, so its a good sign

    Zoltan,
I don't think the PCCB's are suited for tracking yet, at least judging by the ones on the street cars.

    Chris88,
Its on the tunnel. Its sequential in the sense that the gears are 6 straight gears aligned sequentially like in a motorcycle intead of an H pattern.

Well, that is a blow for PCCB credibility, as Porsche themselved wrote that it would equippe all cup cars for this season!

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

    Very nice post Carlos.

It is odd that the supercup teams are using pccb while carrera cup seems to not use them. Perhaps it is simply to save on costs, however to me cost is a factor for whether or not I'd choose pccb...

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

    Yep I read that too.
The Porsche supercup uses PCCB but not the Carrera cup?
What is the difference in both cups?
One is the international Pro one, the other one is per market that incl. amateurs, am I correct?

    Very close.

"Supercup" series of races is run as accompanying program to most of the Formula 1 races. I guess about a dozen Supercup races per year. Some of the "fly-away" F1 races (= outside Europe) are excluded - probably to reduce Supercup teams' costs for travel, transport, logistics.

"Carrera Cup" series are the various national and regional one-make Cup championships run around the world. Quality and financing of teams is probably more "variable" than for the Supercup teams.

Any technical innovations seem to be introduced first to the Supercup cars (= higher-budget teams), keeping the numbers in the first season down to a "manageable" field of maybe 20 to 30 cars(?). These innovations then trickle down to the national / regional series in the following season(s).

The strategy seems to work pretty well. I heard Porsche has sold well over 700 996-based Cup racing cars down the last few years!

The new generation is suited but it is a matter of money of course.

The Carrera Cup is my dream.
I intend to give myself a couple of years to learn how to drive properly, few track days with my 997 and some proper training on track with "real" track car.
RC, Fritz, do you think it's reasonnable timeframe or I'm over optimistic here?
Maybe something smaller to start with?
Like Caterham cup or Clio cup, etc...

    RC, Fritz,
So the PCCB makes its first appearance on the Supercup or not at all for this year.
Pretty big blow for PCCB crediblity if it doesn't, don't you guys think?

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

    Fanch,

depends on what you're looking for. The current GB Cup-champion is driving Supercup this season and doing pretty well.

You shouldn't forget that the top drivers in both classes are remarkable racing drivers, having a long career starting with karting years ago. Some of them were driving in DTM or other major racing series already or will be!

In fact just get out and go, if you're talented and fast enough - and have the money, there shouldn't be a problem to make it at least to the Carrera Cup!

    Thanks Ferdie,
    I'll get some info.
I should be back in France in less than two years now, so we'll see. In the meantime, I'm learning.
But no supercup, Carrera cup would be amazing already, and I checked the website, there are two ranking, a pro one and an amateur one. But you're right, they're probably still excellent drivers.
    I'll keep you updated.

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

Sport auto just test drove the 997 cup. according to them the car feels much more racey and professional than the 996. it obviously need more delicacy to be driven given its lack of abs and the fact that the downshifts with the sequential geat can be a bit hairy if u dont blip. but altogether perfectly balanced, very neutral with slight oversteer when power is applied, just as it should be. the 10hp power difference is not noticeable according to them. still track time on hockenheim is an amazing 2 seconds faster than 996. no wonder Luca Riccitelli was asking for more power with that kind of chassis...

    cheers

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

2 seconds in the short Hockenheim over the 996GT3Cup?? thats incredible! since there is barely any HP increase. Porsche really did their homework with the new chasis and suspensions

Re: 997 GT3 Cup: Specs and Pics

I wonder though, how much of that can be transferred to the normal gt3, as I dont think that the chassis and suspension mods are easily replicable on the street cars.
