    Chrome Tips Installation ?

As I sit here anxiously awaiting my S Cab delivery, my mind continues to ponder the infinite ways in which to visually customize the car. Since Chrome Tips were not available when I originally ordered the car I would like to order them and install them myself. I peaked under an S at the dealer and it appears to be a simple bolt on swap. Can anyone confirm the ease of this swap? Also, the best price I have found so far is on the Suncoast Porsche website for about $380. Anyone found them cheaper?

    Re: Chrome Tips Installation ?

I dunno if it's easy. You may have to grind down the weld. I'm not sure. All I have to offer is this photo showing that some are welded onto the tailpipe. It's surprising way of doing it IMHO. The other thought is the entire "Y" comes off (notice what appear to be clips on it).

Would be nice if we could get rid of the fake "Y" n our S and put a normal looking (non-S) tailpipe.

    Re: Chrome Tips Installation ?

It looked to me that the tips were attached by a bolt just behind the "end" of the Pipes. Did you have the dealer do it for you?

    Re: Chrome Tips Installation ?

Here is what DD694 said about installation on 4/7/2005:

"Installation was quite easy. The old ones slide off after loosening a bolt. The new ones slide on and are tightened in place with one bolt. Aligning the tips is the only time consumer. As you can see in the first shot, the chrome tips are very shiny. Once in place, this difference is less noticeable. I had bought some Autosol to shine up the old tips, but the new tips arrived before I did this. I would say that the choice is just that - a personal choice. The new tips are a bit pricey at US$384 for the pair. This is less than half of what Cargraphics wants for theirs."

Try Sunset Imports in Oregon. They sell parts at cost + 15% & shipping. Go to: http://www.sunsetimports.com/porscheatcost.php

    Re: Chrome Tips Installation ?

The only tricky part of installing the chrome tips is aligning them. I suggest you do one at a time so you have one original tip in place to compare against. You have to loosen the clamp bolt pretty far to allow the old ones to slide off. When you put the new ones on they are very loose fitting until the clamp bolt is tightened quite a bit. Because they can be adjusted up/down, left/right and anywhere in between, the alignment takes a bit of effort and patience. While you are at it, leave enough room all around to easily wash and polish the chrome surfaces.

While the chrome tips is clearly shinier, when sitting side by side off the car (see photo in post above), once installed this difference is not quote as noticeable. This is in large measure because not much of the tips show anyway. The other day I was admiring the back end of my car across a parking lot while in a store and the chrome glint in the sun was noticeable. I am not sorry I added them, even at $384 + shipping.

    Re: Chrome Tips Installation ?

Woody it is a single bolt to take them off...you just wiggle and they slide out.....This part is REALLY important...when you change them out do it one at a time (that way you have an original one in place as a reference)...The tip adjusts up/down left/right in/out....There are no reference grooves, so you have to do it by eye.

    Re: Chrome Tips Installation ?

Do you guys know if they have the "half-moon" tips available for the 997. I LOVE those from the 996. Thanks.

The only tips that I believe are currently being offered are the twin chrome tips for the 997S. I don't think they offer any optional tips for the 997.
