well, depends what you want.
Acceleration will be similar, not sure who would be better. Cayman could be 0-60 proabably with thin 4.6-4.9, dont know though.
Handling, the cayman s for sure will be better.

i am driving the tt 3.2 dsg so if cayman s with dsg surely will stick with that ! and that is what i want to know cayman s0-60? is it less then slk55 amg?
the japanese were very impress about the slk amg , and the old boxster s r too slow on straght road compare to the slk amg .

the SLK AMG will be a good car, very powerful! The cayman will have like 55hp less but it will handle MUCH better brake better and teh chassis all around will be much more sports car like!
Depends on what you want, also consider ones a hard top ones a retractible hardtop.

I'm not sure what the tuned SLK 55 AMG and the Chopster (tuned Cayenne Turbo) have to do with the Cayman S but anyway: the Cayman S is still a mystery...somehow.
Most people hope its gonna be a 911 competitor but all infos I got actually show a different picture: a Boxster Coupe, nothing more and nothing less.
BUT: the Boxster is a pretty nice little sportscar, especially regarding handling performance. For a 280 HP car, the Boxster S performance is impressive but of course it is not even close to SLK 55 AMG straight line performance (0-200 kph/0-125 mph in 16.6 sec.).
The Cayman S is rumoured to have a 0-200 kph/0-125 mph acceleration performance around 20 seconds but not below.
This is still around 4 seconds away from the Carrera S for example.
To make a long story short: if you want a FUN car for twists and turns with fantastic handling capabilities and a very good traction, your wife should go for the Cayman S.
If you want a car with a very good straight line performance, a nice engine sound and a very good automatic tranny, the SLK 55 AMG it is. The SLK's steering feels a little bit numb, my wife owns a SLK 32 AMG right now and the SLK 55 AMG even feels less sporty. My wife gets a Boxster S now, especially since I have to drive this car too from time to time.
I don't think that comparing the Cayman S and the SLK 55 AMG is really possible. The SLK is a roadster, the Cayman isn't. The SLK has a V8 and an auto tranny, the Cayman S has manual. There are so many differences.
Don't get me wrong: the SLK 55 AMG is a very nice car for a woman and I would probably recommend it over the Cayman. But if your wife is a very sporty driver AND knows what she's doing at the same time (mine isn't neither one
), she won't be happy with the SLK.

Neither the Audi or the SLK are really sports cars.
The Audi is heavy and numb compared to a Boxster
and the SLK has its engine to far forward and too
high up for precision balance. Worse yet its many
digital safety nannies stop the fun before it can start.
You may not see a Cayman with a DSG for several years.
If you want bling go with something else. If
your happy with the cornering dynamics of a
Audi, the SLK will feel fabulous to you.

I remember while back 964 and 993 era, there was no car to test drive at all just order hope you'd like it. Well, of course being a Porsche who wouldn't like it, right?
When I ordered my Boxster in 98 I didn't even know what the seats would feel like until I took the delivery of it.
What I'm trying to say is that Porsche wasn't as readily available to test drive while back but for sure things have changed for the better
.

what dealer are you going to? Only ask becasue i think you should complain, no test drive of the car is shocking! Especially when you're going to spend Pounds50k. The merc dealer i've been dealing with is planning to get me an SL55 in about 3 weeks for a few days - that's how customer service should be. Also, seeing as (within the UK and Europe at least) Mercs dealer network is to a certain extent "in house" you should expect the same level of service from each dealer. If this is a UK dealer i would complain to merc UK.

I'm with Jim on this one.
Sportscar = Boxster/Cayman
GT/Cruiser = SLK/TT
It's not really a choice between cars, but a choice between driving styles/philosophy.
Mercedes do what they can to make sure you DONT feel the road, the vibrations...the driving experience, but feel comfortable and secluded from the outside world. A Boxster (and I guess the Cayman will too) is a car than ENHANCES the road experience and gives you plenty of feedback from the road.
Do you want uncompromised sportscar dynamics or a comfortable cruiser with good accelleration?
I believe this is the primary choice to make.
Then look for a car that does exactly that for you.
Personally, I would never even consider the SLK. But then again, I'm biased being a Boxster owner
