    MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

We just heard today that ALL cars built after mid/end of april 2005 get a PCM 2 with MP3 files playing capability in the internal CD-ROM drive.

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

Darn!! this is VERY impotant to me!
How can I find out if my car will get it, it should be here in one or two weeks, so its not finished yet but just about, would it qualify???

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

    Can you upgrade from PCM1??????

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

Trying to ask the same question again: is there a way to upgrade the PCM unit of 997s produced before mid-April ? RC, could you find some info on that ?

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

    That's great news! Thanks RC

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

this is a CRITICAL issue for me too, Carlos!

RC: does internal drive remain CD-only, or will there be "CD-DVD" functionality??
i'm not interested in DVD-videos, i'm focused on creating as much potential recording space as possible within that single disc mechanism...

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

    igzaklee,
I found out my car is going into production this Monday, 25th April, so seems I may get the MP3 compatibility, we will see. But is so, as soon as I get it I will report on it (should be here in the first or second week of May)

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

I doubt the DVD ROM feature will make it.

    1. ONLY the INTERNAL PCM CD drive plays MP3 files (on the newer cars)
    2. NO DVD functionaliy, the internal drive plays ONLY CD-ROM, CD-RW, CD-ROM with MP3 files (now)

Just to explain what advantage this means: a CD-ROM usually has around 700 MB of capacity. Now let's say that each MP3 file has around 3.5 MB size. This means that you get around 200 songs on ONE SINGLE CD-ROM instead of the "usual" 12-20 songs you get on an audio CD. I waited a long time for this option and finally, Porsche is offering it. A little bit late in my opinion, a iPod connector would have been nice too and what I REALLY wanted was some sort of removable harddisk unit instead of the CD changer.

The key question is it retrofittable for older cars?

My car got produced in the last week of March so would not have this development. But what would be good to know is whether it's a software change or a hardware change, and will my setup be upgradable?

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

    RC,
Thanks for the good news !
Hope you're right : mine will be built week 18, first of may.
For the poor chaps who are already served up, what about an upgrade ?

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

Am I the only one that feels kinda "cheated" about this midle-of-the-year change?

If it's a software update, sure it's fine since people who ordered a week, a month or a few months before the change will be able to also get the same functionality.

If it's a hardware change then, I'm sorry Porsche but I don't think it was a wise choice. I know this is an overkill comparison but I compare it like adding 5 more HP in the same MY. For those who couldn't care about MP3 you will think I'm overreacting. For those who were waiting for some support for this option you can probably understand how I feel.

My car arrived last week and had a begin of April build date. If it's a hardware change (which I do beleive it is) then I'm going to feel very pissed about it. You will have MY2005 cars with different PCM2 hardware. Plain stupid if you ask me.

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

if you ask me i totally agree with you .i received car on 6th February, but i feel exactly the same, i paid for BOSE and i think i ve been cheated, cuz i rate mp3 capability as highly rated. If you have mp3 you dont need cd changer. Why this change? And yes it was correct to add mp3 capability, but was it so dificult to think of it from the beginning of the 997 launch? i dont think so.

Re: MP3 - Frustrated and Cheated

I collected my Boxster 3/3/05. I paid Pounds1,850 for PCM + navigation and less than two months later I find out that both are out of date. (MP3 on PCM and now an upgraded navigation with route guidance TMS). Not pleased. Why weren't both of these upgrades available from the start? Neither are that new technology. My wife's Pounds6k Kia has an MP3 stereo as standard!

Re: MP3 - Frustrated and Cheated

WELL nobody listens i think, nobody cares about customer satisfaction anymore. At least for real

What is the "route guidance TMS" feature you indicated? This is the first time I read about it. Can you give me some more details about it?

    Thanks,

Well I'm considering FedEx a letter to Porsche in Germany showing my dissatisfaction about this. It most probably wont do a thing but a direct customer complain can't hurt either.

Btw, anyone knows the best person and address to send this letter to?

    Thanks,

I am not sure that an upgrade implies hardware change, MP3 decoding is just some software thing.

Apart from that, and before writing any letter to complain, I would ask my dealer to get some facts and figures and kindly ask him if some upgrade is feasable and could be offered. By starting to shout, you just reduce your chances to get some arrangements

Re: MP3 - playing capability - good news!!!

An MP3 decoder is not easy to do via software.

I heard that the new PCM 2 will only be available for the Cayenne and that there will be no changes for the 997, at least for the next MY.

I suggest getting rid of that stallion...it has a bad influence upon your vision.

Just sold it, waiting for the next one to come... (but I wasn't joking about that PCM 2 thing)

BTW, proud owner of a 997S now, delivered last week. Very nice, like it!

It is very easy to do via software if you have enough computing capacity. We have numerous products that use software decoding. The PCs all use software decoding for MP3.

Route guidance automatically takes into account any traffic related problems when calculating the quickest / best route.

Which is a useful feature already included in the current PCM version

Re: MP3 - Frustrated and Cheated

That radio is not a PC.

Re: MP3 - Frustrated and Cheated

PCM isn't just a radio. It get PC functions...no ?

Re: MP3 - Frustrated and Cheated

hahaha!! you got that right Texas, how many expansion capabilities could it have? i doubt they are many

vtrader is just trying to say that mp3 decoding can be handled entirely in sw and so all you need is a fast enough processor, enough RAM and flash, and you can handle the decoding and playback like you could on a PC. The problem would be if they didn't put enough of one of these resources in the current PCM that you would have to take apart the unit and replace a board with a new cpu and/or flash and/or RAM. This could just be a retrofit of sw (and worst case, replacement of a board in the PCM). But the latter may be more feasibly accomplished via replacement of the unit rather than taking it apart.
