PCM for '06 Models - DVD based (or CD)

I am not usually this dense but the Porsche web-site and brochures leave me confused on the types of PCM's available. I know there is a regular and an off-road but they are not clear on whether both are DVD based.

So the question is are both DVD based for the Navigation part - with a built in CD player? Also, I see that MP3 capability is coming for '06, does anyone know if this supports an iPod?

I would appreciate it if anyone could clear this up for me.

    Thanks and Regards,

    JR

by Mp3 capability they mean the PCM is able to play MP3 encoded CDs.

    there is still no AUX-IN

Re: PCM for '06 Models - DVD based (or CD)

Thank you Noogle. That clears things up and I think I'll still be getting the 6-CD changer in that case.

The PCM is currently DVD based, it was CD-ROM based at the beginning. There is only ONE PCM version available for the Cayenne, the off-road option is a software option which can be enabled through PiWiS by using a special code.
The PCM is called PCM 2 because the first version has been used for the 996. I had the FIRST, really FIRST, PCM installed on my first 996 back in 1997 and trust me, the software was crap, full of bugs and the hardware wasn't too good either. If I remember correct, the software version was 3.07, 3.11 or 3.14 by that time, it was 8 years ago. The next version, incl. using an updated hardware, was the V 5.xx. It worked better, had less bugs but there have been several software updates too. The current PCM 2 works much better, faster (new processor and improved hardware) and with less bugs. But I suppose that the PCM 3 will be actually THE PCM like it was supposed to be from the start, incl. MP3 playback, iPod connection, TV (DVB-T), etc.

The current PCM 2 installed on the Cayenne is not capable of playing MP3 files. The updated PCM 2 coming for MY 2006 will play MP3 files in the built-in CD-player (the Nav part is in the DVD unit which can NOT be used for viewing movies or playing music!) only as far as we heard. We don't know if the 6-CD changer will be capable of playing MP3 files starting with the MY 2006. Right now it can't.

If you want to use your iPod with the PCM 2, I have a recommendation for you: I used many FM transmitters and all of them (Belkin, etc.) failed, interference was too strong.
Now I'm using a Monster unit, I bought it for almost 80 bucks at a local Apple store at the Aventura Mall near Miami. It works very good, transmitter power seems OK and sound quality is very good too and almost no interferences (engine, etc.) anymore. Highly recommendable if you're looking for a fast and inexpensive solution.

    Thank You RC

I think I'll take up your suggestion on the Monster setup and skip the CD changer. Just seems to be much more cost effective solution as the CD in the back just did not work for me in the Mercedes that had that same setup.

These boards are truly amazing and I look forward to being able to contribute more in the future once my new vehicle arrives.

JR, there may be better solutions but I really tried several devices available in the US and the only one which really delivers a "crystal clear" music quality and an acceptable interference shielding is the mentioned Monster thing.
I added a picture, the name is iCarPlay Wireless Plus.
I have an iPod Photo 60 GB but it works well with other iPods too but not the iPod Shuffle!

    Welcome to Rennteam JR!

Take some photos of your vehicle when it comes in and post them here. We love photos! Which Cayenne did you order?

RC: Thanks for the information on the Monster "iCarPlay". Here's a link to Monster's web page on this unit: click here.

I have been looking for a way to get all the music I wanted into the car without carrying dozens of CD's around. This looks good. I think I'll get one. I hope the sound quality is as good as your experience.

    Re: Thank You RC

Will do on the pics. The order is for just a 'base' model, but have added some nice extras and went with the air suspension so that we can tailor the ride as we need to. Went with the Lapis Blue and grey/stone interior as I like the two-tone interiors better.

I am looking forward to the arrival but it is still months away as we are on the list for the '06 June build at this point.

Will keep up with the action here and will post the pics as soon as I can.

    Thanks again to all,

    JR

Rowlands57: Please do update us with the audio quality of the iCarPlay in your Cayenne. I have my reservations about FM units and really hope this one works. I don't have an iPod but would buy one if the sound quality is good. I have two other 20GB mp3 players and over 5000 songs. I almost didn't buy the CT because of the lack of mp3 playback. I figured I rig something up when I got it. The search begins.

Any word of upgrading software in my 2005 to give it 2006 mp3 ability? That would do just fine

    ITrip

I have done some experiments in my current vehicle, BMW 745Li, with a iTrip that belongs to a friend. It is a very simple device, about the size of a roll of quarters, that attaches directly to the top of the iPod.

I have used it with my stereo tuned to 87.9 as that is a 'blank' station in my area and it seems to work just fine. Please note that if you are in a more populated area there could be issues as it's more likely that a station is broadcasting near your setting. The clearer the FM channel you select for receiving the signal the better. You could check this now before even getting a unit.

I am not a 'nut' about stereo equipment and I find the audio capability very good. I also like the idea of whatever I choose being able to go from vehicle to vehicle so that's another plus for me.

Anyway, based on my experiments to the FM transmitter as was suggested above is the way I'll be going for the iPod hookup. It is just so much more convenient than CD's.

    Re: ITrip

Thats the main problem in the US with such devices, the airwaves are so blocked with stations its very difficult except in very rural areas to find a frequency which is somewhere near usable.

I to have tried all the devices as they become available but I have found that the basic design of the Cayenne is to screen out electromagnetic interference. So getting a signal broadcast from inside the cabin to the radio is very difficult unless your holding the transmitter out through the sunroof which is only OK for short periods at low speeds (haha).

The Denision unit (if it ever appears) is our current best bet for CD quality from the iPod. My wired FM Modulator is only "near" CD quality.

I must also add that I do know of someone with a Ford whose iTrip works perfectly, never really figured that out.
