    Next generation 911 (2010+)

What type of engine do you guys think it will have? Is it safe to speculate that it will be a V8?

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

I believe by then the 911 would be in a different form and shape as we know it today. I mean a possible substitute by then IMO.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

I don't think they could get a V8 back there.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

    Maybe flat 8 could.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

I did not ask if it would fit on the current 911. I am talking about 5 years in the future and I agree with Ron that the car wil be a different shape, meaning larger, wider & roomier inside.

At that level, I expect a V8 or flat 8.

Why does everybody want a V8 in the 911? I don't get it, honestly.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

It wouldn't be a 911 if it had a V8. I agree with RC, keep it a flat-6 and just make them all turbos!

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

There will NEVER be a 911 with a V8. The six-cylinder boxer engine is a definitive element within the 911 concept.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

V8 sounda like a west coast obsession- flat 6 it's the ideal packaging for rear engined cars.

    Exactly.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

    Please NO V8!

As long as their customer base does not demand change there will be no change. Why should they. If their base insist on using a manual typewriter and pay PC prices, why change?

What they forget is how and why Porsche was created.

Funny, if you knew something about Porsche's origins then you would realise you just threw a stone on your own roof with that statement when arguying in favor of a V8 on a 911

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

The timeline is correct per his line about already visualizing the 911 line to 2015. " 998 " should be in production from MY 2010 to MY 2015 and they are probably finalizing the business case from a marketing/ eng layout standpoint and have probably already got teams doing prelim engineering .

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

If you want a V8, buy a Ferrari.

    F430 has made them envious.

Carlos I was referring to the whole car. Styling, configuration and engine. The Cayman and CGT is the future.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

    I agree with nberry.
The cayman and a cgt is the future.
    The 911 is dead.
A mini cgt is being developed to compete with the Gallardo/430, the 911 is going into gran touring territory.

I don't know what you drank before writing this but I would like to know what it is because next time I'm down or depressed, I want to have that stuff too.

Fans who understand what a 911 is do not lust for a V8.

As long as a 911 is made... it will have it's ex-libris profile shape and a flat engine.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

Give me a kick-arse engine - what ever the v's may be.... but PLEASE give me the AUX input on the MOST bus to plug in my iPod.

    Put it on a diet!

Make it lose about 200 lbs in weight by using lighter weight materials. Then you can keep the engine small and light. In turn you can make the brakes smaller and lighter and the suspension lighter.

If Colin Chapman were alive today I would hire him to head up the design of the next 911 - "Just add lightness"

If you are prepared to pay for lightness it's got to lead to a better handling, and a faster car than the overweight little porker we buy today.

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

Somewhere i read that 2012 will come the next generation of the 911 and it will be a totally new built(like 3.2-->964 or 993-->996). But i really doubt that there will be an engine change at all...There will be a flat boxer engine for sure IMO. On the other side i just see potential anymore in the 911 if they use more lightweight in future, otherwise their caymans will outrun the 911's. But as it looks now it seems they really want the 911 to be more of a gt car than a really die hard sportscar as it was, back i don't know when..., so probably the cayman will be their die hard sportscar in the near future let's see

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

Soon or later, in 10 or 15 years, if things go on (security, prevention, no-risk policy, energy saving, pollution problems, traffic jams), don't you think it will be forbidden not only to drive fast car but to make and sell it
So let's enjoy the TODAY 911 and "pourvu que ça dure"

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

exactly my feelings, trying to estimate the future only denies you to live the present

You sir, are the exact target customer for the evolving 911 !

( That comment from the 911 chief engr about the Porsche Cars North America MARKETING people requesting that they " benchmark " a Lexus SC430 was very spooky , for me . That is the penultimate " ladies who do lunch " vehicle in these parts . )

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

There was once a time when people said it ain't a 911 if its not air cooled..well that didn't happen.. If Porsche create a V8 911 then so be it..all the purists will hate it for years, but the introduction of a V8 will probably allow the 911 concept to live on so why not..

    Re: Next generation 911 (2010+)

why is everybody talkin about a V8? IMO if there will be something with an 8 than an 8cyl boxer, isnt it?
