Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Just had this fitted to my Boxster. Unit supplied and fitted by a local auto electrical firm that are excellent, and have used for many years. I didn't want anything stuck to the leather facia top. The head unit snaps into a cradle secured to the centre console just in front of the cubby by double sided tape. Unit hard wired in, so no dangling wires and cables. It's about 15mm clear of the switch panel.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Laser detector fitted by rear view mirror

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Lovely! Any chance of a couple of extra shots from different angles? It looks like the display makes getting to the buttons at the bottom of the centre console diffucult. Does it?

Now, if Origin could hook it into the fibre optics of the car, you could get warnings displayed on the dot-matrix display by the main dials.... that WOULD be cool.... but unlikely!

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

No. Reach them OK, but hardly ever need to touch them anyway. I had the unit offset to fit in the gap between PASM switch on the left and PSM far right. Visibility is fine where it is and you get a shrill beep on alerts. It is also GPS so picks up Gatso's, Truvelo's, SPECS etc.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

    From the driver's side.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Ah, I see. Pretty good fitment. May I ask how much, including the detector and fitting?

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Would you mind me asking how much the install was?

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Unit Pounds429. I was only charged 1 hr labour (Pounds50) as I have done a lot of business with Anglesea Car Radio in Southampton over many years. Actually took about 2 1/2hrs. Porsche Centre Bournemouth wanted Pounds175 to fit. They fit Road Angel on top of the dash, right on top of the centre speaker, which I wasn't keen on, but is an easier installation than on the centre console. Road Angel to bulky too fit there, anyway.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

You'll have to do the hard sell to Julie on Sunday about the 'safety' elements of having a detector - I'm not 'allowed' one... "under the thumb" that's me!

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Keep in mind you will not be allowed to drive in France with this device.
It looks so well installed that I doubt it can be removed, or even concealed. Were you go get caught, the French police would seize your car.

I wonder if an appropriate paint could absorb/modify the wavelengths used by common speed traps.

Not a problem, when I go to France I unclip the unit from it's cradle and leave it at home.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

    What does this gizmo do?
Does it warn you about police photo-traps along the road?
I just got busted twice in two weeks by these %&#&/#/#&&&#% photocars.
I was thinking about spraying my front plate with that canadian anti-photo-spray, but Ive heard the effect washes off with every carwash.

    What's the most effective gizmo?

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

It warns of : Gatso, Truvelo, SPECS average speed cameras, DS2 Speedmaster and mobile Police laser traps. The fixed passive type by GPS location from a database, also known accident blackspots and schools locations. Radar detection is optional as is laser blocking (illegal!). Obviously it doesn't protect from being followed by unmarked Police cars! Traffic light cameras are not included, but if you "jump" red traffic lights you deserve to be caught anyway.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

does it rattle much with the car or is it quite a good fit?

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Not at all. Anglesea Car Radio in Southampton did an excellent installation job. No screw holes, in the unlikely event that I can ever be parted from my baby.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

    Coo. Gonna buy one now!

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

If you do, make sure you buy one from an official Origin Dealer - you get 2 year warranty. Buy from unofficial source and Origin will only give you 28 day warranty. BE CAREFUL! Don't necessarily buy on price!

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Sonds tempting and looks a great fit as well, but I'm a chicken when it comes to radar detectors. Think I'll try trusting my instincts a while longer. So if you see me approaching the Boxster meeting on a bicycle, you know that my intuition needs a software update.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Pounds468 fitted at my local Vauxhall dealer - fully authorised!!

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

You going to take your Porsche to a Vauxhall dealer?

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

That's what I thought but they are pretty good guys there!!! Prob fit it myself anyway! (famous last words)!!!!

    Nice install

If you don't have the optional detector antena fitted to the Origin B2 head unit, you can use it in France, since GPS warning sistems are legal in france. But you would have to unclick the laser sensor in the rearview since this is ilegal in France as are detectors.

The problem is that I don't believe Origin offers a Pan European speed camera database, so it would be useless to use it in France in that case then anyway, since it would not alert you to French cameras.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

Check this install. Its my wife's car, its a RoadPilot Micro GPS warning system, its a really small unit, and with the optional radar detector antena fitted behind front bumber hiden from sight for the mobile radars.

Re: Origin B2 Speed Trap Detector Installation

    Another angle
