Wow - they are racing huge cars!!  Great picture to show the comparison.

Yes, this is last year's F1 car. The current 2022 is only slightly shorter, not much. F1 cars are out of control big.

The 2 outside cars are the Alpine A110, about the size of Cayman GT4s, maybe slightly smaller than that.

I guess that if they returned to a pure combustion solution, that would resolve the issue or are there other factors driving the size up ?

No. It's other things at work.

If hybrid LMP cars can packaged everything in a smaller package, there is no reason F1 teams can't do it.

Teams are taking advantage of the wording in the rulebook to build bigger cars. The 2021 Mercedes is one of the biggest ever, like 5.7m long and 2m wide, Think Maybach 57. Others teams are shorter however.

    Re: [2022] Formula 1

Perez continue his fine form over Verstappen. Could he win this weekend? If he does, there is a good chance he could take over the WDC lead. And what would Red Bull do? Tell Max to be the good wingman? Jos is definitely gonna blow another gasket.

Apart from being slower the Perez, Verstappen's DRS system is still wonky, literally the storyline for 2022. Is Red Bull playing favourite and give Verstappen the lighter car but it backfired? Or was Red Bull planning more cheats with trick wing on Verstappen's car? This is more money wasted on parts by Red Bull, who are already in a cap crunch.

Leclerc again looks very fine on practices, he is definitely on top of the Ferrari for sure, better than Sainz.

Ricciardo, he definitely doesn't fit the McLaren car, he needs another car in order to perform his best. But there aren't too many options for him. Not the 2 Red Bull teams, not Mercedes, not Ferrari. Not Haas, not Alfa. Really only teams he can moved to will be Williams or Aston. Outside chance of returning to Alpine.

Alpine is coming on strong, could they over take Mercedes and become the 3rd fastest team? For sure they won't be the team that can't balance their books and forced to skip races. Heck, they could be the last man standing at the end of the season and Alonso win another title by default.

Mercedes are down on power, down on aero, down on handling, they are so far off it's not even funny. Great job by Russell to drag it to where he placed. He really validated his ability to drag slow ass cars up the field. Also looks like Mercedes is still running different setups between Russell and Hamilton, in order to gain as much data on the new car as possible for the second half of the season.

But at least it's just FP2 times, they aren't quite running race spec parts yet so the order can still change.

    Re: [2022] Formula 1

Sorry but the Whoopsy Max bias is showing.  As Windsor pointed out Max never had a really clean run in FP2.  Max's higher fuel load times were better than Leclerc's on same tires in most cases.  Should be an interesting qualifying session.  Expect it'll be between Max and Charles.  Lewis continues to be no where and sounded deflated when told of the time difference between himself and Leclerc.

It was a big mistake from Ricciardo to leave Renault. He was their nr.1 and everything was done to make the car to his wishes. Plans for the next season was to build the car around him. He had the whole team backing him up.

He got carried away about his ability to win and dismissed  the importance of the team. He shot himself in the foot. What a wake up call at McLaren !  Sad for him to have waisted his chance.

    Is it?

Perez tops the chart after FP3, increases his lead over Verstappen.

Weekend's still young. There is still qualifying and the actual race left however.

In a way, he is like following Alonso's footstep. Doing well in Renault yet trying to chase something that's not there and heads to McLaren and wasted time.

This post aged well.  Spectator effort by Vettel!

    Re: [2022] Formula 1

As it turns out, it's aging VERY well, like fine wine.

Perez's fine form continues. Out qualifying Verstappen to start on the front row next to Leclerc.

He had a mega exit off the last turn as he was almost 3/10th behind Max at that point with a mini slide earlier in the lap.

Max isn't happy he didn't get a tow from Perez, oh well, that's life.

It would seems the Red Bull is going for mega speed on the straight, they are a good 10km/hr up on the Ferraris and the field without  a tow, and giving up a bit in the corners, that could work really well in race conditions and their drivers can defend enough in the twisties and have enough speed on the front straight to prevent someone from passing even with DRS.

Now the most important session will be tomorrow, race day. Which one of the top 4 will win the race?

Will Russell continue his string of top 5s? Mercedes really did very very well locking up Russell for this year. It's too bad the Mercedes isn't competitive or else he could have challenge fro the WDC title.

Most definitely! Ferrari needs to get their acts together for sure.

Can Sainz mount a challenge to Verstappen at the start?

Another talking point, will Red Bull swap their drivers?

And on a different note, anyone else caught the opening ceremony and the start of Le Mans? They sure know how to put on a great show. Can't see in person but able to watch on TV is 2nd best. I got 2 TVs side by side so I got to watch that and F1 qualifying together.

Here in Canada Discovery Velocity channel is carrying the race live for the whole of 24hrs. First time ever.

    Re: [2022] Formula 1

Something weird from the Red Bull garage.

Horner 'claimed' Perez's car wasn't fuelled in time for the delay, while Perez explained it was engine problem, his engine won't start.

Who is right? Team principal? Or the driver that's actually sitting in the car?

I am leaning towards Perez. Horner isn't known to be the most honest person on Earth.

I'd trust the driver over ANY team principal, lying about everything is basically in their job description...

Hopefully Ferrari does lot let leclerc down again this weekend!   But we will see if RedBull show superior race pace again.   Will be grabbing popcorn to see how Christian and Marko navigate the potential brewing storm!

    Re: [2022] Formula 1

Some people are stuck with hating Hamilton no matter what. Doesn't matter what Hamilton do or not do🤷🏻‍♂️😃

Red Bulls will need a jump at the start to get in front of the Ferrari, at least for Perez. Verstappen could be too far back to make a move on the first lap. But then again he could always do his signature banzai move down the inside to see if the others will get out of his way so he can gain the lead.

Their speed advantage on the front straight will for sure prevent anyone from passing them, but not sure that speed advantage can be translated to a pass on the Ferrari. They could be too far back after the twisties to try and pass Leclerc on the straight.

At 4 minutes left Q1, Lewee is on the video, and his head is bouncing like he's being hit with a jackhammer- Lord that car/setup is trash, no wonder he's bitching.  I hope to see George's equivalent video to compare.

    Re: [2022] Formula 1

    https://the-race.com/formula-1/mercedes-experiments-going-wrong-for-hamilton-versus-russell/

It would seems Mercedes is relying on Hamilton's experience to further develop the W13 on track.

Make sense. Russell gets the stable car while Hamilton go for the experiments, especially when Mercedes will not be in contention this year. They gonna gain so much knowledge on real racing condition for next year, heck or even the 2nd half of the season as the testing time will get reset mid season and they will have more time.

Could they gain enough to put up a good fight for 2023?
