    Re: Z4 M40i Roadster...an odd choice?

    kudryavchik:

    It seems you are dissapointed

Not really disappointed, just a little bit surprised.

However, the chassis and steering setups change completely in Sport Plus but you cannot configure the Sport Individual setting to implement this setup, which is really weird and it makes no sense.

Meaning: You can get a Boxster-like (gokart feel) experience out of the Z4 M40i but only when manually(!) switching to Sport Plus, there is no possibility to configure this setup into the Sport Individual setup.Smiley

I programmed the car in a way that Sport Individual is available all the time when you start the engine Smiley but it cannot be done with Sport Plus. Sport Plus has also another disadvantage: It seems that the ESP/TC are tuned to allow more slip in the rear, so Sport Plus isn't exactly the best setup for public and/or wet roads.

I spent 3 hours in the garage to find a way to program the Sport Plus settings into the Sport Individual setup menu and I found the software switches in Bimmercode Expertmode but there is no (easy) way to add a Sport Plus menu to the Sport Individual menu, so it is pointless. I gave up.

Don't get me wrong, the Z4 M40i is a very nimble and quick car with a surprisingly good traction (I wish all RWD BMWs would have that kind of traction) and I never expected it to be a real sportscar but it is fun to drive. Don't forget that the Z4 M40i was faster on the Nordschleife than the M2 (2019 model) when BMW presented the car. Many tend to forget this.

Nurburgring times are good to brag online but really pointless IRL. On the road the M2 is miles more fun to drive than any Z4. (And I’m a fan of the Z4)

I drove the 2019 M2 and yes, it feels more planted in almost all driving modes, the Z4 only in Sport Plus (which unfortunately also affects the ESP setup).

However (and this is probably the reason why the M2 is slightly slower on the Nordschleife): The Z4 has incredible traction. The traction on this car is impressive for a RWD car, only the Boxster or the 911 RWD models are better (or equal). I drove the car in rain again yesterday and traction is unbelievable, the ESP setup is also very good (you can basically go full throttle and the rear barely moves). Drifting with all safety modes is almost impossible, I tried some crazy stuff in some roundabouts and the car is stable as hell, even understeer is basically non-existent, very impressive.

Keep in mind that I am driving on winter tires (255s all around) right now and I guess with summer tires (Michelin PSS) and wider rear tires (275s), the Z4 will feel quite impressive. At least I hope so.

Have you driven the Z4 in Sport Individual or Sport Plus modes?

In all modes, but in summertime. Loved the looks, but was rather boring driving experience. Too polished for its own good, I’m afraid.

RC, you are used to 4WD on daily basis, any RWD will be fun...

If you are used to proper RWD car, then yes, the Z4 will be a bit boring.

Proper RWD? You mean the one without traction issues...aka similar to AWD? Smiley Nice try again.

Being fast in a GT3 is no real challenge but being fast in a car with 1050 Nm on the rear wheels is.

One reason I gave away the GT500, it is not a car you can enjoy on public roads, unless you enjoy drifting at 160 kph or traction issues at 180 kph...straight line. Smiley

Biggest issue was with the tires: While you GT3 softies are blessed with perfectly adapted and tested factory semi-slicks Smiley, I had to experiment with tire types and tires pressures, finding compromises between optimal (safe) curve speeds and Vmax capabilities. Driving with the optimal tire pressure of 2.4 bar basically reduced the top speed from over 350 kph (tuned) to 240 kph. Driving the required (tire manufacturer) tire pressure of 3.4 bar at Vmax was like driving on egg shells...at over 350 kph. Was fun, first time I got sweaty palms in a car I drove myself. Smiley The break was great as well, driving over 300 kph was like playing the roulette: The brake either was effective or the pedal went through and you had to pray. It always depended on outside temperature and how often you used the brake before.

A GT3 is the Volkswagen of semi-track cars but if you want to impress me, try a tdf or the GT500 on the track and try to be fast. There are drivers who did under 7:40 min on the Nordschleife in a stock(!) Shelby GT500. Have fun. Smiley

    Re: Z4 M40i Roadster...an odd choice?

I will give credit to a GT500 when I will see it finishing 3 sessions in a row on a track day without fuming from every corner. Putting a GT500 and a tdf in the same sentence is either a joke or a weird definition of a proper sportscar...

It is like trying to argue that Tesla can be the fastest one time on the NS....pointless. Anyway...back to reality.

This is why I don't do this shit, especially since I don't get to drive the cars on the track anymore. Smiley

The Z4 M40i is just an open top fun car for nice weather, not more and not less. It certainly isn't overpowered or a curve monster but it is fun, in it's own way. Traction is amazing, you won't feel much of the RWD here, so it isn't your typical RWD car, even if the rear moves a tiny bit when you fully accelerate. Turning off all safety systems makes it easier but still not even close to a GT500 or even a GT3.

Oh boy, don't even start me with the price...the Boxster would have been my primary choice (actually the 992 Carrera GTS Convertible or the Boxster Spyder) but lease rates are insane right now and I do not want to buy an ICE car, unless it would be something very special. The Spyder was on my "maybe buying" list but over a year waiting time? I needed a car now. I even put my kids on the insurance (1700 EUR per year with the kids on it, my son's 320d costs 2000), so they can drive the Z4 as well but I'm still not sure I want it, at least not with me in the car as well. Smiley

Speaking of my son: He drove 11000 km in 2 1/2 months only, insane. No incidents so far but maybe he has to thank his car (320d xDrive G20, fully equipped with all safety features BMW has to offer) for it, I don't have a clue. I am proud of him. Smiley He is really a car guy, like I am.

    Re: Z4 M40i Roadster...an odd choice?

    Congrats on the new ride!

It would've been more fun with this, which is dying and disappearing from the manufacturers options list

    Re: Z4 M40i Roadster...an odd choice?

No fun when your kids can't drive it...my daughter has no license for stick, only my son.

Before you say something: I was with her and she is the most prudent and calm driver I ever saw, also she drives quite well. Wouldn't probably give this car to my son to drive it alone for now, even if he did over 11000(!) km in the past 2 1/2 months in his car. Smiley Smiley

The nice thing about BMWs: They have tons of safety features onboard. Just yesterday, when I exited my garage, a driver was passing by my house at a very very high speed (we are in a 30 zone, I think he was doing 70-80, I'm not kidding). I was backing out of the garage very slowly but thank god the emergency brake assist came on in time because it "sensed" the car before it was even behind me.

You didn't had such a system on your AMG, Huracan or even Trackhawk? Is standard for a while on beemers.

Huracan doesn't have stuff like that. AMG had it but not as sophisticated (I didn't order it) and the Trackhawk has it but it is not as good as the one in the BMWs. The Trackhawk's emergency braking assist reacts very late and I already set it up to the earliest warning. For the kids, these assist systems are great (I think).

For everyday use very handy, saved me from hitting (fast) cyclists while reversing a couple of times. A small detail but also very  clever: the backup camera moves left or right, depending on the steering angle. Giving you a much better look.

Having noticed it on the 3series (G20) or Z4. Sounds quite helpful. Smiley
