The 911 in the everyday life

Dr. F. Porsche defined and desired the 911 as a sports car we could use in our everyday life. Is it still an authentic concept and the 911 in its last version, still follows is initiator rule?
Among other examples, do you bring your relatives with you to the movies in your car, or do you go and shop around in your car, well do you do every simple things of life with your 911 just like any other car?

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

From my limited experience in this car (997S), i would say the car is an excellent everyday car. The car is absolutely brillant at speed, but just as easy to drive slowly around town. It is also the only sports car that I know of where my 2 year old son can be with me in the rear seat and wife next to me. My son absolutely loves 'the red car'.

The only thing I do not use the car for is short trips to the local dépanneur (the quebecois term for convenience store). The trips are just too short to get the oil warm enough for my liking. We live in a very hilly area and I prefer not to stress the engine before it is warm. As such, I always take the long way out of the driveway when in the Porsche to give it time to warm up. But for a quick trip to get some milk, I will grab our well used Golf and just go.

But other than that, this car is my daily driver from April to December. It is just so comfortable and practical; not to mention a lot of fun!

So yes, the car is still authentic to the original objective, at least for our family.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I take it everyewhere but park far away from everyone else!

Very wise and surely the way to go!

Regarding the orginal question I think the 997 is the most suitable car for everyday use among ALL SPORTS CARS currently available.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

During the spring, summer, and fall I drive the car everyday. Any chance I get I drive the car. I don't care where I am going. I agree with rss996 - park far away.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I drive my 997S to work pretty much everyday. Especially when it's raining outside so that it gets a good wash!

When I need to take the family to run errands, I just take our Acura TL.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I absolutely drive it EVERYWHERE. I even drove it in the snow...with winter tires, of course. With a car like the 997, I figure you gotta enjoy every minute of it. It brings a smile to my face everytime I crank the engine...

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

Please, why do you park the 997 far from everyone else ?
Do you fear they hurt your car ? are they so nasty ? or clumsy ?

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

here in the US nobody cares.... if you park too close to another car you are sure to suffer quite a few dings in the doors or scratches from people squeezing between the two parked cars.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I forgot you don't frequently park parallel...

    No, silly, it's different now.

Back then when the progenitor made his preferences known, the world was more reasonable and practical. The car had HP so it could use the Autobahn to best advantage, i.e. to get somewhere efficiently. The car provided higher standard of comfort and luxury/quality that you could righfully expect at the time.

Now, same stuff that appeals to buyers but it's all overstated and hyperbolic. HP is for ego-enhancement. Sumptuous interior and comfort items say: I'm worth it. Marque indicates power and success.

Went from necessity of providing a nice pair of well-fitting Italian shoes, to the accessorizing mentality of a beautiful piece of jewelery.

Hummmm, on second thought, looking at the messages of some old Porsche advertisements I have to conclude: things ARE the same today as they were when they started making the car.

Re: No, silly, it's different now.

As you say I should be brainless indeed. I didn't catch the meaning of what you said. I vainly read your post several time, but with all my respects, I can't get it.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

Its not only for every day use for me,
its my legs that i walk with

Sorry, I'm not that great a writer. I was comparing the "obvious" diferences between the philosophies of the old 911 and the new 911 and, suddenly realized they're NOT obvious at all.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I use it everyday for work, and even the shopping run, coped very well yesterday with a full monthly grocery shop and a 19" TFT monitor, could have taken a lot more with the back seats down.
My only problem if at all, is that I have to drive on a dual carriageway for much of my daily drive and that is OK but not great,
I have almost 7,000 miles on the machine now and absolutley no regrets moving from something softer (XK8) to a 997S

.... and here in Europe parking spaces are just not so generous in terms of dimensions, so the end result is the same.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

When I go to the mall...I drop who ever is with me at the door and park as far away as everyone as possible...walking distance makes no difference..some say im crazy but have not ever had a ding on any car I ever owned so there...oh and as for Valet?... whats that? ;-)

I don't think I can hand the keys to my 997S to a valet. At least not yet.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I use it everyday. Previous daily driver was an 2004 5 series automatic which my wife now drives. Haven't used a manual as a daily driver for 15 years but have had no difficulty adapting to driving a manual in city traffic - the engine is so flexible and the gearbox so smooth. Our kids are young enough to fit very well in the back so it's used for family outings also. The boot is big enough for 3-day weekend trips if you plan carefully and stay in motels. Coming from a larger car, the hardest adjustment I've had to make is unexpected situations where I have to carry more passengers.

The throttle response - no matter what gear you're in is so addictive that you want to drive it all the time!!

Mee too, This is why we are both crazy.

Door dings can be fixed cheaply.

My 3 series BMW trade in got me $300 extra dollars for no door dings and extremely low mileage.

Still, it's hard to park among the ordinary cars and let it take it's chances with absolutely thoughtless people or, worse, vindictive idiotts.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I drive my car (2004 C4S) year round wherever I go. Winter here can be harsh and I will take a cab or another car if the snow is too deep. I switch to the factory recommended Pirelli tires for winter. The car is an absolute trooper; it hasn't given me any problems so far. I have about 10,000 miles on it now. I always park deep into parking lots, I NEVER hand over the keys to valet parkers (remember Ferris Bueller?). There is more than enough space to pick up some stuff at the store even with one of my small kids in the back. Last but certainly not least : my car is a LOT of fun to drive.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I use my 997 more on the weekends when I can really let it loose on the freeways and through the canyons. I use my X5 SUV for errands and shopping and when it rains.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I picked up my new 997S April 2 and drive it everyday to work (30 miles each way), son's soccer practice, grocery store, etc. Rain or shine. What's the point of owning such a great car if you're not going to drive it?

All my Porsches are and have been daily rides. That's what the car was made for; I agree!!! All weather. Day and night.

Completely agree! I'm driving the car every day.

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

me too every single day, dont wanna miss that!

Re: The 911 in the everyday life

I don't drive it daily, but I guess I could, its that practical. I have an SUV for bad weather days, I'm in Houston, where it can flood easily, so I'm not risking my 911's! I've had a car flood before, not nice.

Yeah, you get a pass on those days.

Yeah, readers of this forum should see this old movie. It's so funny when the two valets take this vintage Ferrari and make it fly down the hilly street. Isn't that film taking place in your city? Then you must know where that street is...
