    “Porsche primes 718 Cayman GT4 RS and Taycan GTS for LA motor show” (Autocar)

    Porsche has confirmed that it will reveal a hardcore new GT4 RS version of the 718 Cayman coupé at the LA motor show next week, flanked by a pair of new Taycan variants. 

    The hottest Cayman has been described by its maker as "perfectly irrational", promising quicker laptimes over the existing GT4 courtesy of its lower kerb weight, added power and increased downforce. 

    Porsche has all but confirmed, meanwhile, that one of the new Taycan variants will be the long-awaited GTS. It will be positioned between the 4S and Turbo variants – a gap that is filled in the Panamera and Taycan line-ups by the lower, stiffer and black-themed GTS models. Expect a similar treatment for the Taycan. 

    Details of the third bodystyle variant are less concrete, but Autocar reported earlier this year that Porsche was considering a lower-slung, less off-road-oriented version of the Taycan Cross Turismo. Removing the 4x4-inspired body cladding and bringing the suspension back down to the saloon's height would provide the manufacturer with a true electric alternative to the Panamera estate. 

    Several development mules of the more focused version of the latest 718 Cayman GT4 have already been spied testing on the Nürburgring. A late-stage test run saw a prototype lap the 12.9-mile Nordschleife in 7min 9.300sec. On the shorter, 12.8-mile version of the circuit that Porsche has previously used for development, the model achieved a claimed 7min 4.511sec lap, which, the firm says, is 23.6sec faster than the regular 718 Cayman GT4.

    The laps were completed by test driver Jorg Bergmeister, and the car was fitted with a full racing seat and optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres.

    Andreas Preuninger, Porsche's GT model line boss, promised that new model has "everything that characterises a genuine RS: lightweight construction, more downforce, more power and, of course, an even higher level of responsiveness and feedback to driver inputs."

    Porsche has revealed no technical details of the machine, although both the new official images and previous spy shots showcase a number of bodywork additions for the RS.

    At the front, there are versions of the Naca bonnet air ducts similar to those on the 911 GT2 RS, while the rear quarter windows have been replaced by slatted cooling vents. Blanking plates at the front suggest the hardcore Cayman will gain similar wing-mounted air outlets to its 911 GT3 RS sibling.

    A large, bespoke rear wing – significantly larger than that of the standard GT4 - appears to be mounted higher and to use a new mounting design. Also changed over the standard GT4 are the wheels, which forego the traditional five-lug pattern in favour of a motorsport-inspired centre-lock mechanism that hints at the car's track potential.

    The man in charge of the 718 and 911, Frank-Steffen Walliser, told Autocar at the Frankfurt motor show in 2019 that he would “definitely” like to see a faster and even more focused RS version of the new 718 Cayman GT4 but that the decision hinged on prioritising development resources within Porsche. 

    “Everybody’s asking for the RS,” Walliser told Autocar. “Can I imagine a GT4 RS? Sure I can. That’s not to say we will make a decision on it yet, as it is a challenge. Would I like such a car? Yes, definitely! Would I like more horses? Yes. But we need to put the resources where the market is; it would be a lot more expensive than the normal one.” 

    Although Porsche is working on a new electric equivalent to the Boxster, speaking in 2019 Walliser downplayed speculation that it would join the glut of newly launched electric hypercars with its own take on the formula - for the time being, at least.

    Pouring water on the claims made by manufacturers such as Rimac and Lotus, Walliser said: “We've seen a lot of studies of electric hypercars. For me, the proof is when it’s on the street with a licence plate. Does an EV hypercar work? It’s like saying to me that a drag racer is a suitable sports car. For sure it’s perfect from 0-100, but to make it usable and do several laps of the Nürburgring wouldn't work with the technology at its current state.”

    Walliser did welcome the idea of using hybrid technology to extend the life of Porsche’s widely celebrated naturally aspirated GT engines. “A hybrid for sure with a normally aspirated engine works well together," he said. "The low-rev electric motor torque and high-revving normally aspirated engines fit perfectly. It could help to keep a normally aspirated engine to survive, and we're very motivated to do so.”

    And the mystery solved.

    Porsche didn't mean to say the GT4RS plus 2 more 718 variants.

    the GT4RS IS one of the variants. The other is the GT4RS Clubsport.

    That GT4RS CS should bring it back competitively against other cheater GT4 cars from Mclaren and Mercedes and such.

    Clubsport version will be finished in vanilla white if they follow Porsche tradition of painting all their race cars white.

    But they did break that tradition by painting the 992 Cup car silver. So the Clubsport could be silver.

    There is no such car as a GT4 RS Clubsport.  Its either a GT4RS or a GT4CS; 2 totally different cars.

    Manthey announces new Porsche one-make series - the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring

    A new championship will be launched at the Nürburgring for the 2022 season: the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring. The championship will be held as part of the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NES) and is divided into two classes: the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring Cup 3 and the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring Cup 2. With this new one-make series, Manthey aims to follow on from the success of the Cayman GT4 Trophy by Manthey-Racing.

    The Porsche Endurance Trophy races will take place at all eight events in the NES 2022 season. The Cayman GT4 Trophy by Manthey-Racing will become the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring Cup 3 class. As in previous years, both the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport (Type 982) and its predecessor the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport (Type 981) are eligible to start in the permit A and permit B categories of the Clubsport races. This allows drivers with both models to complete the laps of the Nordschleife needed to acquire a Nordschleife permit A.

    “After six years of the Cayman GT4 Trophy by Manthey-Racing, we want to take its success to a new level. We would like to give our teams and drivers an unprecedented opportunity to develop their skills, from acquiring the permit A, to the first duels on the Nordschleife in the Cayman GT4 and finally the first race in a 911 GT3 Cup. And all of this with the same technical and organisational support. If you look at how the drivers who have been with us since the start of the Cayman GT4 Trophy have developed, it’s clear that expanding our race series is a logical move,” says Julia Klee, who is responsible for the organisation of the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring.

    In addition, there is the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring Cup 2 class where only the latest generation of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is eligible to take part. The car has already demonstrated its endurance credentials during an NES race in September. As expected, the modifications needed for the Green Hell were relatively minor, which means that the additional package for use on the Nordschleife can be fitted to the base model at a low cost.

    This consists primarily of an exhaust system that meets stricter noise requirements, a modified tank filling system and changes to the spring rates to make them fully compatible with the damper system, plus an aerodynamics package. In addition, on the Nordschleife the 911 GT3 Cup will have traction control (TC) and anti-lock brakes (ABS). The ABS and TC systems can be fitted in the factory or retrofitted. Both systems can be activated and deactivated electronically. This means that the cars can be used in both sprints and endurance races without problems.

    The two classes combined make up the new Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring championship, with joint rankings and class rankings, both accompanied by attractive prize money. The emphasis in the rankings will be on equal opportunities. Professional racing drivers and  amateurs, known as “gentleman drivers”, will be competing in identical cars on the Nordschleife. Michelin, which was the partner of the Cayman GT4 Trophy by Manthey-Racing series, will be providing identical race tyres for the cars at the track for the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring. All of this makes the Porsche Endurance Trophy the perfect event for both established teams and newcomers to enjoy an exciting and successful racing season. The normal technical and parts support will be available to the teams both at the races and off the track.

    In addition, similarly to previous years, all participants can take part in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the qualifying race with the same car configuration. Both events count as individual races and will not be included in the annual rankings for the Porsche championship. Manthey will be presenting a car for the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring Cup 2 at the Essen Motor Show 2021 on the Nürburgring Endurance Series stand.

    GT4 RS Clubsport model is the pure racing model (sold here for track use).  Clubsport package (with cage) is not available in US on street models.
