Cayman and 997 Turbo on Nordschleife - is it a Cayman Turbo?

Hi Porschephiles,

I'm reading Rennteam since Sportwagen-hp.de, keep up the good work RC!

While surfing carpassion.com I found this video:

Watch the Cayman - it sounds to me like a turbo engine??

It has even air inlets on both sides as far as I can see.
But the suspension setup looks like a "Cayenne All Terrain setup for Cayman" option.

Feels not right for a Clubsport...

What do you guys think? RC?

that video was awsome. that looks like a cayman turbo, not that I know what it looks like but its got that wing at the back and kinda sounds like one too.

The link didn't work. I already registered on the English version of that site but I think theirs a german version.
Once again, is this a recent video?
The cayman there looks kinda wierd,(cool though), looks more 911ish then the other ones we've seen so far.
Let us know if you find out anymore and thanx for sharing the video.

the cayman is not turbo

it has air inlets because it is mid engine.

the sound is probably because they have no mufflers on the cars when they test on the nurburgring.

I've posted the video HERE to find out more about it!

One more thing, look at the tailpipes. It has one single pipe on each side like a 911, no Boxster midmounted pipes as seen on the Cayman spyshots.

The airinlets are different from the spyshots too. They look like those on the 997 TT prototype.

What is it?

Good point eliot, thats what I was wondering too? It does seem different to other cayman shots and it sounds kinda turboish(maybe I'm just imagining it), I know because I've been in a 993 turbo before.

I'm watching it again and the inlets are very differet to the boxster and cayman spy picks. Also, what is this?
Looks like 911 front(more than boxster almost and back is just new? It is disguised though.
Maybe we are wrong about the sound and its just a normal cayman, perhaps what the cayman will really look like.
I did here rumors that it looks very different to the spy picks.

I'm sorry but judging by the video and what I saw and heard, this seems to be a Cayman S, not a Cayman Turbo or whatever. The side air inlets are camouflaged, this is why they look different.
Very nice video but it doesn't show anything new or spectacular.

I forgot to add: Porsche tests a lot of different prototypes. Even IF the Cayman in the video would be a turbo version, this wouldn't mean automatically that a Cayman Turbo will be available sooner or later.

But all rumours we have indicate a less powerful and a more powerful version beside the "S" version of the Cayman.
Of course this also depends a lot on the success of the Cayman.

This car does not look like Cayman...front, tail, tailpipes, side...it looks, like new 911TT from the outside, but does not sound like 911TT engine inside...and those nervous engine sound waves...sounds, like mid engine most probably from Cayman...

...I suspect it's "a sheep in a wolf's clothes"...if one may call it...may be it's Caymans DUMMY inside (suspension w engine) comuphlaged around by new 911TT body shell...

May be they are just testing Caymans internals in a 911TT shell...

If Porsche follows their product line category then there should be a Cayman turbo but again Boxster line should get it too in this case.

911 - 911 S - 911 Turbo
Cayenne - Cayenne S - Cayenne Turbo
Cayman - Cayman S - ?
Boxster - Boxster S - ?

The car in the first part of the movie is a 997 Turbo.
The car in the second part of the movie is a Cayman S.
It is just heavily camouflaged, nothing more and nothing less.

It seems more than just heavily camouflaged.Why would they camoflouge the other caymans that we've seen in spy picks and this one so differently. They are a different shape even

Maybe somebody can make a picture out of the video, post it and compare it side to side to other spy picks(dont know how to). I paused the video and compared it and it looks very different though there are some features which are the same as the other spy picks.

the noise sounds like a leaking exhaust to me, not a turbo of any kind -- especially not one I have heard from Porsche. Unless they are prototyping a new type of turbine....I seriously doubt this. My guess is that they were testing some different exhaust options and some clamps or bolts came loose.

Looks to me like the old mule shots you used to see. I am not convinved this is the Cayman as we now know it......

Early Cayman mules were camouflaged that way to deceive people in thinking that this is a 997 Turbo.
There is a special branch in Weissach which develops all this camouflage stuff and they really seem to have fun doing that.

The more the official presentation date gets nearer, the more the camouflage disappears. In the end, there are REAL production cars driving around with only a few black/other colour stickers driving around which can be removed easily after the official presentation. The old test mules can be sometimes admired in Weissach, I had the chance to see the first 996(!) Turbo mule in Werk 1 a long while ago...it looked horrible, completely stripped out. But it was an interesting experience...
