    3 New Retro 911 Models?

Re: 3 New Retro 911 Models?

I doubt the GT3 engine can be squeezed for another 50hp out of it. The ST could be a wingless GT3RS instead. Porsche do take notice when their customers keep taking off the GT3RS wing. Put a duck tail on it and give it a PDK and voila, 50th anniversary RS. After all, they did say RS is the about being fast so PDK is the only choice.

Porsche also doesn't have a manual box that can take the torque from the turbo S motor, the Sport Classic will likely be a PDK only car.

The article seems like it's taking up the wishlist from Rennlist.

Re: 3 New Retro 911 Models?

Thanks, Nick!  I have heard rumors that the next GT3 RS will have a 4.2L NA motor making around 550PS (only 30hp more than the last RS, but 40hp more than the new GT3 - I think the magazines often confuse PS and HP and forget to notice Porsche changed their standard which accounts for nearly 10hp change on its own).

If they put this motor in the ST, that would make it basically a GT3 RS Touring (4.2L Manual widebody and wide wheels/tires with only a folding rear wing).  Suspension could be much softer without the need to cope with enormous downforce.  I imagine the price will be around $300k with limited edition plaque.

Does the idea of the 50th Anniversary RS being a Turbo 3.0L seem consistent with what you may have heard (seems a little disappointing)?  Your comment about the Manual gearbox not being able to handle the 3.8L Turbo's torque makes sense why this model could use the 7spd Manual from the GTS.   But your idea about it being PDK/Ducktail version of ST seems to has some merit too...

Wonder if 50th Anniversary RSR could be coming too?  A mid-engine one like the current race car would be interesting.

Got your text while I was on the forum so I replied you here instead Grant.

    Also, if indeed it's a 4.2L motor, then it isn't quite the 4.0L GT34 motor isn't it?

While the 7-speed is a development of the PDK box, I don't think the modifications can stand up to the 590lb-ft of torque from the turbo S motor, the regular 3.0L turbo engine only makes 390lb-ft after all.

Re: 3 New Retro 911 Models?

Porsche supposed to have another 5 Heritage Edition cars coming out.

The Targa took the initial one.

Sport Classic would be one of those. Maybe the ST also. There should be one for the 718 as a send off.

    2 left.

If they do release the 50th RS Anniversary then that would be under the Heritage label.

I imagine the Macan would be too young to get one. Cayenne however might, to celebrate the Trans-Siberia heritage.

Unless of course they do one hypercar celebrating the 917 label.

RSR race cars are successful, but not that successful. Do they warrant a commemorative edition car? If anything, I suppose they should honour the Cup car instead, most successful race car they have developed, granted it was mostly raced in their own one make series.

RSR street cars will be mid-engined, which is not cheap for them to do. A unicorn car? Nah, people will still buy them, but at least 992 units? They didn't even sell out all 200 GT2RS CS cars and had to eat up a few of those in their own inventory.

I think the 992 body is just such a pig that there is nothing Porsche can do to make it attractive. What do I want? A Speedster that's 1989 911 sized. A Porsche turbo that's 991-964 sized. Not even 993 as that's already AWD-ed. Maybe a 911 SC. Maybe they could plug the Boxster GTS 4.0L motor into a 911 for that SC. But that still doesn't solve the primary problem of the 992 being a pig.

No offence to you having the 992 GT3. But I spent 5 days straight driving a 992 turbo S in European mountain roads. The drive is amazing, the turbo S is so responsive it's unreal. Handling wise it's better than my Exclusive. But the primary problem is still the size. It just feels way too big even when the ultimate dimension isn't that much bigger. Some of the roads I drove before, in a 991. I realized when I was driving the 992 in the same roads, my left wheels are mostly on the centreline, or on the other side of it. From my vantage point on the driver seat, I simply can't place it any closer to the wall or the barrier. I simply don't trust my perception of the width of the car from the driver seat. And I know I can placed a car where I wanted it to be mm perfect, I raced a 991 Cup car near concrete walls and gravel pits.

Re: 3 New Retro 911 Models?

    Thanks for info!!

Yeah, I love the size of my 73 911 - would love a new 911 in that size.  But, I honestly don’t feel much size difference between the 991 and 992.  The size change is far smaller than 993 to 996 or 997 to 991…

Re: 3 New Retro 911 Models?

    Whoopsy. I agree with Grant.

The "size ship" sailed with the 991.1 GT3 IMO. Since then they all seem fat to me. It Dosent bother me on the track. Width makes no difference here. My 992 GT3 dosent feel any noticeably bigger than the 991.2 before it to me...

However for fast back road drives with friends Im preffering something smaller for our roads. Im thinking Lotus Elise, or Alpine A110, Toyota GR Yaris, Ford Focus RS. Manual, ideally two wheel drive and light. And not so expensive, I guess the Lotus Elise 240 Sport is probably the only one that meets all those requirements.

Thats what Im looking to purchase soon.

My old 993 would be perfect but I cant be bothered with the maintenance parts scarcity and increasing value/liability.

The Cayman/Boxster/Spyder is a good size too. But Id be happy for another brand as we are a two Porsche family already.

Re: 3 New Retro 911 Models?

I am not a real fan of "limited editions" - I think it would just be great if Porsche allowed a base carrera to be specc'ed a bit more towards "racing" - just like they did with the "T": bucket seats, rear seats delete, rear wheel steering, plastic rear windows and they could even "limit" such a car to base colors I assume. It is / was such a shame that - at least in my neighborhood, that dealers specc'ed most of their "T"s again back to an "ordinary" base carrera.

On the other hand, there seems to be such a vast amount of liquidity / cash around that Porsche could come up with a Cayman convertible and call it "limited edition" and people would still buy these...

Re: 3 New Retro 911 Models?

I think the 992 safari is missing from your lists

Re: 3 New Retro 911 Models?

They could do an SC/RS as there's been a lot of Dakar type interest in modern 911s recently.

Modern RS America (GT3 Touring Cab)?

Porsche needs a boxster/cayman replacement with sharper lines to replace the 90s looking boxster/caymans that look like yesterday's inflatable beach balls.

A "Anniversary" model that's just more of the same but with decals and colored wheels is not enough.

The replacement with sharper lines is coming.  But it includes a replacement for the internal combustion engine...

Porsche, evidently, hasn’t learned the lesson from putting an anodyne boat anchor in the 718 models.
