    Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

I had polished the exhaust on my Boxster, so decided today to spend the time and polish the S tips.

Metal polish, steel wool, a dremel, and a lot of elbow grease.

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

    Looks good - nice plate

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

    Nice, and nice plates!

By the way, who does the checkerboard type things over garage concrete slab? I was thinking of doing this to my garage, debating of doing it myself though to save money.

    Thanks,
    Kauai

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

If they are stainless steel I wouldn't have used steel wool. Big no-no using steel wool on stainless. Will look bad in a few weeks or days because the iron from the wool that is now engrained in the SS. Better to use scotch brite, no iron, and much less hardness: won't scratch as much. Keep in mind it is very hard to literally polish SS because it is such a hard metal to machine, you are basically just cleaning it with chemicals.

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

I know that...so I coated them with a product called Wichinox. It's used for the passivation of marine stainless steel, so its' very durable. I've used it on previous stainless steel polishings and helps keep the luster for several months, before needing to repolish.

That's cool Chris, no problem. Passivization, nice way they describe it. It's amazing that we're relying on a single layer of oxygen atoms to keep it looking stain-less.

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

Here is how Wichinox describes what it does:
"Passivation is a process by which steel becomes "stainless" by immersion in a heated bath of phosphates.
In a salt water environment this protective film is often worn or corroded away.
Wichinox is a non-hazardous paste which contains a phosphoric acid that will re-passivate, seal and protect your stainless steel."

They look great and I did the same thing on a 996. However, as soon as I drove the car and the exhaust got hot, they immediately yellowed again.

These folks have the best garage gear going.
I was going to put in the Black and White Checkers but I saw the Silver and Black at Sears last weekend and I'm going with that instead:

You can also check out these guys:

Also, next month I'm ordering an 8 ft workbench from Gladiator and putting their Modular GearBox , Modular Garage Refrigerator Modular GearDrawer. You can see these pieces under the "Tool & Gear Storage"

    Looks like this:

Got my little Snap-on creeper seat today. It's great for deatailing cars and working on my bikes. You can sit at eye level with the side of your car and roll around it in comfort without killing your knees. Looks like this:

Where do you get those great wall panels? I can never find them, not even on that website.

Porsche chrome plated exhaust outlets installed on my 997S.

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

Left one is chrome and right one is stock installed on my car.

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

    Both chrome installed.

In your opinion, is the chrome different enough from polished standard pipes to justify the expense? This is assuming you had tried polishing the standard tips. Some folks who have polished the tips report that the standard tips look pretty good when you put some effort into polishing them.

How difficult was it to install the new tips?

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

Installation was quite easy. The old ones slide off after loosening a bolt. The new ones slide on and are tightened in place with one bolt. Aligning the tips is the only time consumer. As you can see in the first shot, the chrome tips are very shiny. Once in place, this difference is less noticeable. I had bought some Autosol to shine up the old tips, but the new tips arrived before I did this. I would say that the choice is just that - a personal choice. The new tips are a bit pricey at US$384 for the pair. This is less than half of what Cargraphics wants for theirs.

Did you get them from Suncoast Porsche? I saw them on their website for that price. Are they official Porsche parts? I ask this since Suncoast shows the part number as 997stips, not the official 997 111 981 20 (left) & 997 111 982 20 (right).

When my cab arrives I will try polishing first. If I am not satisfied with the results I may buy the chrome tips.

Bring them to a chromer. Probably pay around 50 bucks.

Re: Say goodbye to ugly tailpipes...

Yes, I bought them from Suncoast and, yes, they are genuine Porsche parts.

Chrome plating result is no better than the polishing/finishing job done prior to plating.
