    Thanks in advance,

Yes, we know the date. But since I didn't see or hear from any other source the same date, I'm cautious with publishing it. Shouldn't be too long though...

I know that a lot of people want to order a Boxster S and some are still undecided if they should go for the Cayman S instead. This is why they urgently want to see the real thing. Maybe this helps: the Cayman S will be a great car, no doubt about it. But it is no Roadster.

    Re: Cayman S official pics

I heard May 23rd for the press launch, but hope it is before

The 997 was officially shown on May 10th 2004 I think, so it's not far off.

I think that it looks great, they seem to be heading in a decent directiong which is good.

The rear is camouflaged so little. Somebody that is good with photoshop could probably make a fairly accurate rendition of the back of the Cayman.

Re: rear end of the Cayman (from Autoweek)

Its shaping up to be rather beautiful at the back and hopefully sufficiently different from the boxster.

The Cayman will be very 911-alike, at least up to a level that 911 wanna-cannotafford-buyers may jump on this train.
I still think the Cayman S is the most useless car Porsche has ever built, especially at this price tag because Boxster lovers would want an open top and 911 lovers would stick with the "original" thing.
I can't help it but in my opinion, the Cayman S is an experiment and at the same time an attempt to "attack" the legend 911 from within Porsche. I hope I'm wrong though.

What would have made more sense? A Cayman S based on the 911. A lightweight 911 without the rear seats but maybe the possibility to load the rear through a rear window system which can be opened. The 911 "Cayman" would have a better reputation, it would sell easier at the suggested price tag and people would finally get a "cheaper" 911 "light" at 300 HP maybe only. The Cayman S doesn't make sense to me, sorry.

Maybe that's what it's all about, think of the Cayman as a more track focused mini 911.
I know, very different from an engine layout perspective, but marketing wise, I think you were not far from the truth actually.

Re: rear end of the Cayman (from Autoweek)

If they Cayman had a different engine, weight treatment, suspensions, etc. maybe I could rationalise the Cayman as a more track oriented mini 911, but its got the same wet-sump boxster/carrera engine, weight will be just like a boxster with the only savings of a fixed roof and no other weight savings treatment, suspensions will likely be the non-track oriented PASM, etc. So no big difference to the Boxster S at the track in terms of focus, a bit faster due to the maybe 50kg less at the most and few extra ponies, but its not more track focuse like the GT3 is relative to the Carrera. I see little advantage over the Boxster S with just a fixed roof and similar engine, suspension options, etc. and a sportier base 997 with -20mm is very close in pricetag.

To me the only sense the Cayman S makes is to be able to get rid of the base 997 so as to leave only the 997S as the base 911 leaving a 10k marked up base 911. Purely an economic-marketing move.
Like RC said, those that like the roadster concept will opt for the Boxster due to its opentop, and those that like the coupe concept have the sucessfull and varied 911 line-up. But a Cayman GTS with the lightweight treatment of the GT3RS and its track oriented focus would be a differnt thing altogether. That would have its place and following.
But the Cayman S is a dissapointing Boxster without a opentop advantage and just 15 or so more HP to try make it more attractive. Those who are willing to loose the opentop for performance would also want GT3 suspensions, engine, etc. for a complete more track oriented package, cause in the street, just a fixed roof and 15HP is not going to make a difference IMO.

Re: rear end of the Cayman (from Autoweek)

My take on the Cayman .

    1)

Since Porsche is trying to generate more money and needs to expand their line of products, they're coming up with Supposedly a different product line called "Cayman". It would be like Audi TT naming their cab version differently from the coupe version .

All Porsche marketing is trying to do, in my opinion, not to introduce a track ready/version of the Boxster at all, their intention is to get more buyers in order to show higher numbers in paper.

For those who know Porsche product 911 is their sports car and GT3 is the track king.

Cayman is for those whom have attempted to purchase Porsche before but were tangled in the midst of Porsche's price myth that it is hunderds of thousands of dollars and never try to even touch it. Now with Cayman they get to drive Porsche which is just a 911 with a different name (to Cayman buyers) and at the same time being introduced to what Porsche is all about and may be late on move those buyers up to the 911.

    2)

First move to repalce 911 eventually.

Re: rear end of the Cayman (from Autoweek)

Back to the picture: look how beautifully the lines of the fenders are... I think I woill love the rear a lot!

Re: rear end of the Cayman (from Autoweek)

Agree with the above assessments. The standard cayman will make more sense for those upgrading from the TT class of cars, as cayman s is way beyond pricewise. The CS version will appeal to those looking for hardcore sportiness. The S will only sell to those keen on having the newest thing on the block till it loses its cache.

Re: rear end of the Cayman (from Autoweek)

The idea of a Boxster coupe with pricing a tad below (or the same with more content) that of the Boxster and a little better performance due to weight savings and stiffer structure was my idea of paradise. I didn't ask for a 295HP 3.4 for a bunch more $$$.....just wanted the 280/3.2L in a nice coupe.

Now we have the Cayman S. Undoubtedly it will be a great performer, but an answer to a question that nobody was asking IMO. With pricing most likely over $60k it really doesn't have any true competitors that can be matched up to it.

Now if a base version is offered with a 260HP version of the 2.7 and a lower price......what then? It will compete more inline price wise with other sport coupes, but will quickly be overshadowed by most as 300HP is quickly becoming the standard. The next gen TT will most likely have more than 300, 350Z is already there, Corvette is way past, M3 is way past, and yet the base Cayman will still cost more than all of them and will likely get its ass kicked on the street. Porsche "intangibles" are worth something, but they don't help a whole lot when you just got blown into the weeds by something that cost a lot less.

The base Cayman should be priced around $42k with the S coming in around $55K, but I'm sure that won't be the case.

Many posters (myself included) have made similar observations. I think that the Cayman may do well initially, since it will be "novel." But I strongly suspect that within a year or so it will require significant discounts to move this product. The only possible difference would be if the 911 were to move further up the price scale and the Cayman allowed to be the "middle Porsche."

Some posters have commented that Porsche plans to have the Cayman slowly displace the 911. I think that this is not part of Porsche's plan. The 911 is their highest profit product, and it will be preserved at all costs. 40 years of product development and "customer development" will not be given away on a gamble on this product IMO.

Re: rear end of the Cayman (from Autoweek)

...imagine future 911 with MID engine, like in Cayman...
...think of Cayman PLATFORM as a TEST DEVELOPMENT base for FUTURE 911!..

...also IMAGINE in the US after 1 year run one may start getting 5 or even 8-10% discounts on Cayman...that will lead to CaymanS 60-6=$54K out the door!.. GREAT M3 and other competition beater...

...I'm pretty sure PORSCHE AG will not let DOWN against competition, like M3...

Re: rear end of the Cayman (from Autoweek)

cayman i believe is actually aimed at the SLK AMG crowd, and whatever BMW you think belongs there too...

of course the irony (and insult) is it could easily cannibalise 911 on a variety of fronts, not the least being ozr's comment above^^

    Re: Official Pictures ....

Official pictures of the Cayman will be available in July 2005, with a presentation of the car at the Francfort Motor Show in September. The car will be available shortly thereafter (Oct/Nov in Europe).

The Motor-show in Frankfurt (IAA) will be in the middle of september. I'll be there, who else?

Suppose official pictures were made available earlier. How soon would you guess we would be able to see them (just asking an approximate time frame since we all know you have no inside information whatsoever )?

    Re: Official Pictures ....

I read a lot about may 23 being of some importance. if something would be made available about the new model why not actually some pictures. I mean everything else is already surfacing.
You can already hear the sounds on their website and IMO that would lead to showing some teaser pictures very soon. Maybe not even real closeups or some desert runs with lots of dust flying around.....
But hey I am new on here so that was just an opinion!!!

P.S. Would like to thank all the moderators and editors for this great Forum. One really learns alot...Thanks and keep it up!!!
