    Alarm Problem

Is anybody having problems with their alarm system setting itself off? My car has been back at the dealer twice and they have failed to find the cause. They initially changed the latch and solenoid as they claimed this was the problem. This didn't work. Next they replaced the siren itself claiming that the 996 had a similar fault which was rectified by installing a new one. This has failed too.

I've given up on them now and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on it..

    Re: Alarm Problem

I've witnessed it at a dealer after returning a 997. The alarm of the 997 went off without any reason, the dealer did not look that surprised..

    Re: Alarm Problem

I heard a similar case but it that case it turned out to be a small spider inside the car that would set off the sensors until the owner discovered it

Did you have any after market electronics added. I had Lo-Jack installed when my 996 was new. Everytime I would arm the alarm it would go off by itself at some point. They later discovered that the installer tapped into the interior light circuit. The alarm system thought that someone keep opening the door everytime Lo-Jack recharged itself by drawing current from the interior light circuit.

It took my dealer two days to figure that one out.

    Re: Alarm Problem

Hi Carlos - This would sound like a reasonable explanation, but the problem only happens when the car is outside. I park the car in an underground car park and it never goes off, so it has something to do with electrical interference of some sort. Unless of course, there is a spider and he only moves when the car is on the street!

The unfortunate thing about all of this is that I have to disable the deadlocking and alarm each time I park the car - not a good thing.

    Re: Alarm Problem

No PS. Nothing has been added.

    Re: Alarm Problem

It would be too much conicidence to be a thing like a insect roaming around again, could it be that the sensitivety threshold of the sensors is set too low from factory?

    Re: Alarm Problem

Can that happen? I would have thought the dealer would have checked that. Then again....

    Re: Alarm Problem

I don't know, it happens to other cars. I have set off car's alarms with the exhaust noise of my sportbike for example due to their sensitivety set too high. But maybe not in the Porsche or factory alarms but I would ask just in case if the sensitivety can be decreased to see if it changes things

    Re: Alarm Problem

Thanks for your help Carlos. I'll go and see them and see what they say.

    Re: Alarm Problem

Mine has done it twice and once I opened the door to find a moth flying around!

    Re: Alarm Problem

Looks like insects like the 977 too!

Oh, c'mon Carlos! That remark will start someone off on that "Beetle" thing again!

    Re: Alarm Problem

I have the same problem with my 997, my dealer told me that they were unable to fix the problem. They called Porsche and they said that some of the car alarms react to cordless house phones, it has something to do with frequency they use. They have told me that they have no solution to the problem as of yet. My alarm went off the other night around 4 in the morning!

    Good Luck,
    Ray

    Re: Alarm Problem

If this is true, its ridiculous but why would only some coars react that way

Perhaps in some countries the frequencies allocated to either the alarm remote or the interior motion sensor are the same as local cordless phones?

    Re: Alarm Problem

but then, all 997's in that country will go off, why "some" cars in one area and not the others? doesn't make sense

    Re: Alarm Problem

My point exactly. Do you think one can reject a car because of an alarm? Sounds crazy I know, but if I can't park it on the street, then surely this is a big problem.

    Re: Alarm Problem

Mine went off again today and ironically it was parked in front in the same spot that it went off the first time. I have only parked there twice and it has gone off both times!

    Weird!

Beetle vs. Mothra vs. the 997s Gremlin.

WOW, this car really is a Gremlin. My car's alarm went off in the garage for the first time today. So, could it be the lojack, a spider, the cordless phone setting off the alarm remote or the interior motion sensor, the sensitivity setting of the sensor, the siren, the latch and solenoid, or could it be Mothra.

Maybe if I get the twins Mora & Roru to dance around and sing a bit, then the world could be saved.

    Re: Alarm Problem

My wifes old 7 series BMW had a similar problem with its alarm. I never armed it at home so I don't know if we would have had a problem here, but there were certain retailers that we would park near that would alway set it off. We would go months without any problems, but let me park in front of the neighborhood DVD store and off it goes. Everytime! It also happened at a sporting goods store. Other than those places, we never had any problems with the alarm and the dealer checked it out and said it worked fine.

Re: Beetle vs. Mothra vs. the 997s Gremlin.

Irradicate the possibility of something moving around inside the cockpit setting off the alarm, by deactivating the interior sensor....I believe you need to activate the alarm twice in quick succession (tail lights will give you a confirmation by illuminating for 2 seconds) and this will shut off the interior sensor....If the alarm goes off....it ain't no spider!!

    FROM THE MANUAL

    Deactivating the passenger compartment
    monitoring system for one locking
    process
If a person or animal remains in the car while it is
    locked, the passenger compartment monitoring
    system must be switched off.
    f Quickly lock car twice.
The doors are locked but can be opened from
    the inside:
    1. Pull inner door handle once to unlock door
    lock.
    2. Pull inner door handle again to open door.
