    Mini Cooper - Official "Works" Engine Kits

    BMW dealers will have the official "Works" engine kits available in Germany starting April 2003.
    Cooper S upgrade to 200 HP (from 163 HP) - price tag 5000 EUR incl. tax and install.
    Cooper upgrade to 126 HP (from 115 HP) - price tag 3000 EUR incl. tax and install.
    Install can be done at ANY official Mini Cooper dealer (mostly BMW dealers).
    The engine kits do not void the warranty and can be installed even on older cars.

    Note: I don't know if these engine kits will be available to other countries outside Germany.

    RC--The John Cooper Works kit for the Cooper S will be sold on the basis you described in the USA, the Cooper kit will not be available here. The JCW kit for the S is priced at $4500 plus tax and installation. Install time is estimated around 6-8 hrs, so the final price will be over $5k. Although it includes an improved cylinder head and supercharger it does not include a limited slip differential which is what the car really needs. Even a stock MCS will spin its wheels in spirited driving coming out of corners, and its a real issue on the track. You can buy an LSD for about $1k plus tax and installation (which is a big job), but it will void some of your warranty.

    I thought FWD cars never have true limited slips, since it screws up the turning of the car.

    It seems only Honda came up with front wheel drive machines' handling solution with its type-R series.

    Quaife makes a true geared LSD for the MINI. It is usable on the street as well as the track by splitting the power to prevent any binding while turning. Unfortunately it costs about $1100 plus installation. There are some cheaper units that are not true LSDs but more of a locker-style, but I don't know if they work well enough to justify the install.

    Quaifes are not LSD's, they're torque-biasing diffs that provide no locking when not under throttle.

    Thank you, I know how the Quaife unit works, it has no clutches or friction pads, it is a true geared unit. The torque biasing is what makes it very viable for front wheel drive applications. My point was that the MINI Cooper S needs some help getting its power to the ground, more than just upgrading suspension and tires. Both the Nuzzo and Hampton MCS race teams as well as rallyists in Canada and New Zealand have noted this.

    Seth - I'm not trying to be snotty, but I guess I just wanted to know whether any FWD cars actually use a true clutch type LSD...
