The car is slightly under 400 EUR per month...no harm done. Smiley Most parents here pay 250-300 EUR for a stupid Mini.

Maybe you missed the thing with the BMW company car, it is used and had 14000 km but it is a 08/2020 car and fully loaded. A friend works for BMW development and "found" this car for us.

Even thinking of getting a Z4 M40i as a C63 S Cab replacement. Got a special offer for a new frozen silver II car (looks amazing, a silky matte finish) with red brake calipers for 600 EUR per month (car is worth 70k). Offer is valid only 24 hours, it seems some BMW employees think Z4 production will be stopped next year, so they try to snatch one. My friend secured 3 cars for him (same options, same frozen silver II color, 2 are already promised) and I could have one of them.

Hope you test drive the Z4 before you buy.

I did not enjoy the driving experience.

    Re: First car

Thanks but I do not think much differently than you do.

The Z4 is more of a comfy roadster than true sportscar, I already test-drove it. It feels quite close to the 320d with M chassis my son has. Smiley The car looks great though with that silky matte frozen II paint, it also is quite cheap (lease) and it would be just a fun car for sunny days, nothing really special. It was just a thought, nothing written in stone yet. Have to decide until tomorrow though. I do not want to get a Boxster or a 911 Cab, too expensive for the few days I am going to drive this thing.

My first car was red Toyota Corolla. Not very exciting but I was only a uni student. My second car though was a Fiat 124 sport - I really loved that car, great performance for the price, great exhaust note and the best sounding horn of any car I have ever had. I imagined it would fit in perfectly in traffic in central Rome.

My first car was also a red Toyota Corolla, gift from my parents during high school.   Smiley

Now we know the real car guy - excellent eye. Big brothers 1972 Mach1 , 351 Cleveland. Sweet ride. I had a set of keys.  Gladstone and I would take it from the high school parking lot for lunch and, hilariously, need to park it on a different spot.  Sometimes a long way away. Drove my brother nuts trying to figure out what was going on.

I did not buy a car to my oldest son (he is now 19) Actually we talked about it and he did not want one. His logic was that if he gets a car it would be less nice then the cars we have in the driveway and would have to stick with it while without a car he can take more or less any of ours.  The one he prefers to take is the 964, way over any of the modern cars we have.

First car - 1979 Porsche 924 but replaced months later with a more mundane Ford sedan after sliding through an intersection backwards.  Death of a cousin in a car accident didn’t help matters either.

    Re: First car

Lovely car, but to be honest not sure that giving your son such an expensive car (relatively speaking) is a good way to teach him the value of money. Easy for them to grow up thinking the world will be handed to them on a plate and end up a typical “spoilt rich kid”, not that I’m saying your son will end up like that IMHO it would have been a better idea getting him a good used base Golf or similar. He may also end up with jealousy and resentment issues from his peers too  Smiley

My dad bought my first car (a five year old Austin) but I had to repay him weekly out of my earnings. If I didn’t pay I didn’t get to use the car. He could easily have bought me a new car, but he definitely taught me the right ways.

The car I got him is mostly about safety but also a little bit of happiness. My son is a very good kid and yes, I know, I think many parents would say the same but he really is. He has everything a kid needs/wants but he never asked for it.

I don't know how to explain it but my kids are both amazing, never had a demand or a (material) wish. My daughter loves books (and yes, I buy her all the books in the world and she loves reading...in English only, keep in mind she is German).

My son is crazy about cars, he is crazy about sportscars but the only thing he ever wanted was his own car ("something with 4 wheels, I don't care"), nothing else. He dreamt of course of a V8 RAM or Challenger but he knew that this is impossible. He finishes school next year, not many possibilities to earn his own money. His grades are quite good, so I shouldn't complain.

My kids know the value of money and they also know that money is very important in life but it isn't everything.

Also, my kids had a very tough life over the past few years. I don't want to go into details but especially my daughter was in a very dark place until recently and I am glad she is much better now. A little bit of happiness and good feelings never hurt. Smiley Smiley

    Re: First car

Wishing you all the best RC! Everybody brings up their kids in their own way. Your son must be over the moon with his car! I remember when I first got my own PC... I was so excited, couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, etc. My first car was a bit more utilitarian; a peugeot 205 that I bought second hand of a friend-of-a-friend's-mum for €800,- smiley Immaculate shape, and never missed a beat... until we adjusted the valves and misreplaced the plastic cover that covers the belt and I blew up the engine when it got stuck under the belt angel

    Re: First car

Safe cars are generally the newest ones and that means everything to a parent. I get that and I do that.
Two lessons I always thought my kids.
    1) I’m not raising kids I’m raising good parents. Keep that vision.
    2) If you need any something in life ask for it like this -  what do I need to do to get xyz?

so many kids just want stuff but don’t think about earning it. Asking what they need to do to get a raise from their boss someday will make the future boss appreciate their understanding of earning rewards.  99% will just ask for a raise without asking what they need to be doing. Amazing

    Re: First car

My first own car was a new 92 Honda Prelude my parent's bought me for college, up until then I had driven my parent's cars. Fun car but had a slush-box transmission that I wasn't fond of, still, you always miss your first car.

    Re: First car

My first car was a VW Golf IV 2.8l Highline, a pretty cool car but way too nose heavy. Not to mention the consumption of the engine...

    Re: First car

My first car was a Triumph Spitfire Mark IV when I was studying in the UK..

Very charismatic roadster and popular with people at the University Campus but with very old tech and a terrible rear swing axle. The technical highlight was the electrically engaged overdrive in 3rd and 4th gears.

Nevertheless I did some memorable tours of England. I remember my once-a-month travels between Manchester and London at an excessive (for that vehicle) top speed of 95 mph with the car feeling very light and almost airborne angry Total ignorance of danger in those days!

    Memories and nostalgia.

Lots of Triumphs here so I'll add my TR7.

It was the US EPA certification car then a development mule, so US bits, Euro parts, even the AC from the TR8.  If there's one thing more fun than keeping a British Leyland car running, it's tracking spare parts for an orphan model.

First car was an 1983 VW GTI made in the US. Picked it July 2, 1983, $10500 Cad. What a beautiful stock exhaust, nice burble, no farting!

Awesome!  The TR3 was the first sports car I ever drove.  It had only around 100hp but felt fast with your hand able to reach the pavement as you drove.  Taught me some important lessons about objective performance and driving fun being two very different things.

    Re: First car

It was a very fun car and I have great memories.......with the top down and a surfboard standing up behind the seat and driving to the beach......starting on a Saturday morning to change the piston rings and finishing that day in time to go out on a date (did it without pulling the engine by removing the oil pan and undoing the connecting rods)

Reminds me of stories from my boss  when I was an intern ages ago. He grew up in LA and talked about rebuilding VW bug engines at the beach.

My first car, when i moved from Aust to Switz, was a VR6 Mk 3 Golf. I loved it. Engine was unburstible, although i think only around 180 BHP which by todays standards is nothing.

However, the 180 bhp did move the car quick enough in traffic and is still quick enough for most driving situations.  High horsepower ratings and flabby crossovers do not add much to driving dynamics and acceleration.

This was my 2nd car, 2000 Jetta IV VR6 5 speed 174 hp. Nose heavy indeed and very thirsty but lovely sound and good enough power with lots of low end torque.
