    what exactly is RMS??

i am terribly sorry to sound extremely ignorant, but i've just ordered a 997S and am concerned with with all the RMS leaks and engine replacements i've been reading about on several forums. i've done searches on it but can't find a plain definition on it. Anyone care to point me in the right direction or just give me a quick definition (explanation)?? thanks in advance.

    P.S. i hope i didn't make a mistake in ordering this car.

    Re: what exactly is RMS??

Don't worry aristal, RMS itself is no big deal to fix, its not a mayor problem, the issue is that POrsche does not admit there is an issue, but the leak is no big deal:

As to blown engines on the 997, don't use the boards as a statistical reference, if there is a blow engine, we are going to hear about it but there will be thousands that have no problem that do post it.

    Re: what exactly is RMS??

    Hello Carlos,
I've read a bit about RMS already (and decided to go ahead with my order for July alloc 2006 997 ), but still have a couple questions for you please.
I believe I have read that once you see RMS it has to be fixed "right away". Why is it so? I mean, besides from the obvious fact that you want something broken to be fixed, does an unfixed RMS cause damage to other components of the engine? What is the natural progression of an unfixed RMS??
    Thanks.

Anybody Know why the RMS is SO BIG?

The thing is about 5 or 6 inches (13-15 cm) in diameter! From my amateur mechanic point of view, it's size is why it fails! In a seal with huge diameter the velocity of the oil spinning around would be greater and the concentricity tolerances would be more difficult to achieve.

If you don't find what you are looking for using the search function then don't hesitate to ask cannga, we are here to share our info

I doesn't have to be fixed right away actually, generally if you spot the small oil drops on the floor you make an appointment with the dealer to check it out and in the meantime you can drive the car just the same. As a matter of fact due to the fact that the oil leak is very small (usually just a few coin sized drops on the floor) many owners don't even notice there is a leak and it is only found upon inspection by the mechanics on the next regular maintenace appointment, so the owner may put quite a few miles on it with no problems.

However, this doesn't mean that if you spot the oil drops that you shouldn't worry about it at all and just wait till the next maintenace service, the reason being that in some cases the excess oil may eventually make its way into the transmission causing contamination of the clutch and flywheel. In these cases, the clucth and flywheel need to be replaced as well since its cheaper to replace them that to try to clean them. This is not always the case when the leak is left unfixed for prolongued periods but it may happen in a few cases. The owner may not notice the oil leak but will notice the clutch starting to slip, he brings it in and the mechanics find the RMS leak.

So its not an emergency, you can still drive around, I drove quite a bit with the RMS leak I had in my 996 since I don't generally have a habbit of inspecting the floor under the engine and did not notice it at first. As soon as I saw it I knew what it was and made and appointment with the dealer and told the head mechanic to have the parts ready and before I brought it in I still made something like 300-500 miles, I had no problems, it got fixed and not a drop since. But still get it fixed as soon as you can, no sense not to.

    Re: what exactly is RMS??

    Carlos,
As always your reply is (very) informative and helpful. Thank you.

    Re: what exactly is RMS??

thank you so much Carlos for the info and informative thread. it clears up alot of questions i had in mind. but what does RMS stand for?

    Re: what exactly is RMS??

Your very welcome aristal and cannga, and welcome to Rennteam by the way

R.M.S. stands for Rear Main Seal a.k.a. crankshaft sealing ring of the flywheel side as Porsche likes to call it.
