    Re: 992 GT3 RS

Why is the big wing Ok on the Senna and not on an RS ?  I am not saying i find it pretty but it is there for a purpose.

    3307887_7.jpg

The 992 RS will be much more extreme then any of it's predecessor, even in the driving department. Some well informed people told me the car will be more like a race car to drive and many tourist drivers will not be at ease with it.

The RS is not a car to drive on congested highways nor to cruise down boulevards. It is meant to be the best track tool possible, that you can drive to and from the track .

With that specific purpose it's wiser to buy a race car, no? That's always the best track tool possible.

I loved the RS for it's (relative) versatility, but it looks like they went hardcore with this version. Maybe a bit too much for a car with a numberplate?

If Mansory or TechArt would've come up with this wing for the 991, we would all be rolling on the floor laughing.

I don't mind the size of the wing, but what I do find ugly is that the uprights are so close together and centered... The CUP looks so much better in this regard.

Managing a proper track car takes much more infrastructure. You need a trailer, you need tools. I will cost more to service, depending on the car you need proper mechanics to set it up,  etc....  You also then need to find track days that accept non road legal cars. Can't do TF at the Ring.

With the RS you still manage to drive from/to the track with saves a lot of hassle.

    Re: 992 GT3 RS

Looking at a cup instead of a RS is not very on the same league. the cup costs an arm and a leg to operate and as Gnil mentioned, it is only possible on race track days. on top of that, you need a team with it...

GT4 CS would be more reasonable.

The RS is a car with plate, engine good for 200K kms and only requires a bit of oil every X kms and the tank to be filled at the corner station with a tyre change every few track days.

Bubble look of the 992 suits very well this RS. First 992 I find possibly attractive...

    Re: 992 GT3 RS

I had planned to trade my 991RS for the 992RS. Now I'm not so sure. I can't get past the size of the wing. It's as though Porsche is discouraging buyers like myself who do not track their car to buy the car. The attraction of Porsche has always been that you can enjoy their cars without tracking them. surprise

As a prior poster indicated, if you want a track focused car you can have one for a lot less money and still be able to drive it to the track.

    Re: 992 GT3 RS

From what I can gather the 992 GT3 covers both the 991 GT3 and the 991 GT3 RS in terms of laptimes and overall purpose.

The upcoming GT3 RS will be something which was never offered before from Porsche. A more extreme road legal track car both for its speed and its appearance.

I understand that RS drivers from previous 911 generations will be more than satisfied with the new significantly upgraded GT3. For the new RS only very serious drivers who also habitually track their cars need to apply.

As much as I find the wing so over the top and ridiculous on a 911 with a plate, the RS version is intended for the track first and the street second, so you cannot blame them for the wing, the RS was never intended for owners who don't intend to track it, they can buy it if they want and do whatever they want with it, but it's not made for them in mind, for them they already have the regular GT3 version which is intended more for the street than for the track than the RS.

Personally, even if I would buy one because I wanted a 911 with the intention of tracking it,  I would still have a serious problem driving it on the street because of that wing, I'd have no problem at the track but I'd feel quite self-conscious on the street, would probably limit it's use mostly to the track. But that is just me, that is a matter of preference.

    Re: 992 GT3 RS

Let me put it another way. This is a street car with excellent track performance. What percent of miles put on this car will be on a track? 2%?

I can understand if the car was designed for almost exclusive track work and the intended audience is a professional driver. But its customer base is the average Joe who wants a special car different from the run of the mill 911 which he can enjoy primarily on the city streets. But that is not for whom the car was designed and intended for, may have become a common customer for this model, especially in the US, but I it wasn't made for them, there is a difference. For those people they make the regular GT3, there is nothing on the RS version that those customers can take advantage of over the GT3 except looks, which is not what the RS was made for. That is why the put the wing on the 992GT3RS and don't care if it looks over the top on the street.

Not sure the RS makes much sense without the wing - that is where the huge share of the performance improvement over the GT3 will come.  And the RS won't have a Manual...  May as well buy the GT3 (with or without wing, manual or PDK).

Maybe the 50th Anniversary is the car for some - maybe just ducktail with RS underneath (and hopefully Manual at least as option).

Nick - I think you are projecting your use onto other RS owners.  I know plenty of RS owners who put well over half the miles on the track (and some 100%, with trailer).

    Re: 992 GT3 RS

Grant, in your crowd, I'm certain track mileage would be higher. However, if you look at those for sale, very few admit to track miles if any.

Regarding the Touring, as I wrote earlier, I want my car to looks different from a regular 911. The Touring looks like a 911. Its a stealth 911 and most would not know its capabilities. The delta of $50,000 between the two is unacceptable to me.

Often it's the cars that are collected rather than driven (tracked) that are sold multiple times in a short period, while track guys often keep the car at least while the warranty is active.  So, you may see a disproportionate number of Garage Queens for sale compared to tracked cars (and sometimes the tracked cars are not obviously tracked once they are on the market).

Hahah I was thinking the same way. I wouldn't be surprised if Porsche pulled a rabbit out the hat by introducing a clubsport package with this huge wing, and a touring or otherwise badged version with a more "subtle" version.

You have a very wrong perception of the RS.

The RS is not designed to be a road car at first. It is made to be the best track tool possible but with the possibility to drive it also on the road. Only with the 991 model (and PDK) did people start buying the RS to cruise boulevards. But that is not the philosophy of this car.

Maybe it is the case at your local dealer that customers don't track their RS. But generally people track their RS, at least in Europe.  People I know who own RS probably do more miles on the track then off the track.  Many don't even use them on the street. They only use them on track. You very seldom see one driving on the road but when you go to a track day, it is full of RS. I basically don't drive my RS on public roads anymore as it is pretty boring and frustrating. The only time I am on roads is when I drive to/from the track and once and a while I will do an alpine road for fun.

    Re: 992 GT3 RS

If someone questions the wing it means that the racier 992 GT3 RS concept is not for him. The radical 992 RS seems much removed from the 997/991 RS formulae.

I would expect a driver of 991 RS to be more than satisfied with a "basic" 992 GT3 which will be a serious upgrade given mainly the new aerodynamics and the front suspension.
