    Short new E 55 AMG (W211) FAQ

I hope this little FAQ provides some help for people interested in the E 55 AMG.

    1. Is it possible to remove the 250 kph speed limit?
Yes, it is possible. You can order a raised speed limit (300 kph) on a new car, cost is almost 2600 Euro incl. tax and install. This option is not available to certain countries like the USA. A retrofit is possible but only at AMG in Germany. Retrofit on US cars or on cars from countries where the raised speed limit isn't legal is not possible. Caution: a retrofit can be substantially more expensive than ordering on a new car because of tire approval (you might need a new set of tires if your tires aren't approved by AMG for the 300 kph speed limit)

    2. Does the raised speed limit include a lowering of the Air Suspension?
Officially not. But it seems that cars with raised speed limit go around 10-15 mm lower than "standard" cars.

    3. Does AMG approve aftermarket tuning like engine mods, speed limit removal or raising or "electronic" lowering of the air suspension?
The answer is clearly no. You surely will loose warranty, even on the whole car if you're unlucky. Dealers are asked to keep track of modified cars!

    4. Is it possible to easily raise horsepower by ECU mods only (like on turbo engines)?
No. It might be possible to gain 20 HP by ECU mods only but this is not recommendable. If you want more power, a lot of things have to be modified including the supercharger and the exhaust system. Right now there are power upgrades from 560 to 620 HP available from aftermarket tuners, most of them also raise the speed limit to 320 kph.

    5. When will the new DVD Navigation System be available?
Starting end of march (or even slightly earlier), the DVD Navigation System should be available on german cars. I don't have any information about other countries.

    6. Can the new DVD Navigation System play DVD movies too?
Apparently the german version of the DVD Navigation System will be capable of playing DVD movies too. I don't have any information about other countries. It seems that AMG also offers a DVD changer as a special order item. TFT monitors should be available for the rear compartment too as a special order item from the AMG Manufaktur.

    7. Can the DVD Navigation System be retrofitted?
Apparently, the DVD Navigation System can be easily retrofitted on all APS 50 equipped cars, at least those built in the past.

    8. Does AMG offer any engine or suspension mods/upgrades for the E 55?
Right now, AMG does offer only the raised speed limiter. No other mods/upgrades are available at this time.

    9. Is it true that the E 55 is lighter than the other AMG supercharged V8 models and has a better performance, even if it has slightly less power?
AMG claims practically the same performance figures for the E 55 and the SL 55. But from real life experience, it seems that the E 55 has a tiny advantage in performance.

    10. Is it true that a E 55 is even faster than a Porsche 911 Turbo from 0-300 kph?
    Yes, this is true.

    11. Is it true that the E 55 doesn't have the same magnificent exhaust roar sound as the SL 55 AMG?
    Yes, unfortunately this is true.

    12. Is it true that the E 55 has less power than the SL 55 or CL 55 because of the exhaust system?
This is the official explenation from AMG.

    Re: #11

I was very happy with the exhaust sound of the E55. I haven't driven an SL55, but I think I want to if it sounds even better.

Is it similar in character but with more "roar", or is it quite a different sound?

    Re: #11

    I have driven an SL55,
It does sound great but not amazing, very bassy, kind of similar to the Z8 but not as nice.
Clarkson on Top Gear described it quite well too, it sounds like a WW2 fighter plane .
    Fanch.

    Re: #11

Well, I guess the sound on the SL55 is very nice, not as good as on the Z8 but pretty close. The Z8 sound is a little bit throatier. The E 55 sound is pretty throaty at the beginning but is overall less loud than on the SL 55. No doubt, the E 55 and SL 55 have different exhaust systems. I like the sound of the E 55 but at higher revs, it gets more quiet than on the SL 55. I like it best when you start the engine on the E 55: a true V8 rumble, I really love it. Unfortunately this engine isn't available on a real sportscar. Imagine the supercharged V8 on a 1600 kg roadster...WOW.

Would the CL55 have the same exhaust and sound as the SL55?

How does the performance of the SL and CL compare?

    Thanks for the E55 info.
Being currently not attracted to Porsche's current offerings I am considering changing my Vath modified E430T (4.8litre) for the new E55T. Do you know when it is due out?
Just how bad is the fuel consumption on these new E55s, UK magazine Autocar only managed 7mpg on average in their road test.
    Thanks

    Re: where's the turbo?

    RC,

i checked your profile recently and noted that there's an E55 in "sports cars owned" and the TT moved to "former sport cars"... now i know why there's a new forum section dedicated to AMG

    CL 55 and SL 55

As far as I heard, both the SL 55 and CL 55 have practically the same performance, the SL 55 may be being slightly faster from 0-300 kph. We didn't do any SL 55 vs. CL 55 comparison, so this is pure theory now.
The only thing we know is that the E 55 slightly outruns the SL 55 from 0-300 kph, difference shouldn't be very noticeable though.

    E55 Power

Someone posted a dyno graph for their new E55 AMG on MBWorld. They claim they were putting out "480hp / 6140rpm and 730nm / 2690rpm (corrected)". The picture of the graph was very small. I can provide the link if anyone is interested.

    Re: E55 Power

As far as I heard, the E 55 delivers somewhere from 475 to almost 500 HP. The 480 HP figure would make sense but I have to confess that I rarely trust dyno figures. If they don't take out the engine to test it, dyno figures are pretty vague. They are indeed good for comparison testing but they don't tell much about the absolute real power at the moment of testing, no matter what a lot of the companies who build dyno systems claim. Another "problem" of error: the human being operating the dyno. So many things have to be taken in consideration when doing dyno testing...it is almost like an art.

The advantage of the E 55 vs. the SL 55 is the weight. The E 55 also delivers more torque over a wider range of rpm than the SL 55. But I guess the main reason why the E 55 officially has less power than the SL 55 is...politics. Nobody can tell me that AMG couldn't design the exhaust system of the E 55 in a way that there is no power loss. With "full" power, the E 55 would have outrun all other AMG models with the same engine at a lower price tag. AMG or DC (whoever is responsible) didn't want that. Look at AMG's claim for the 0-1000 m (1 km) acceleration...same values for the E 55 and the SL 55. AMG's claim for the weight difference is 120 kg. So yes, the E 55 is 120 kg lighter than the SL 55. They had to go with a lower power figure on the E 55 because of the competition in their own house.

What I'm curious of is if it is possible to run the SL 55 ECU software on the E 55. I'm not sure about the claim with the exhaust system and it would make much more sense if the ECU software is the limiting factor and not the exhaust system. I can't exclude however that AMG's claim with the exhaust system is correct.

If AMG would put the 612 HP engine of the CL 65 AMG in the E 55, I might be the first customer to order it. Don't get me wrong: we own now three AMG cars but I still don't think that these are real sports cars by definition. But they are excellent daily drivers, I can enjoy my E 55 together with my family and people don't seem to be that envious when they see me in a AMG car (was a quite different experience in my 996 Turbo).
But whenever I see a Porsche, my heart starts beating faster.

Sorry, overlooked your E55 T question.

As far as I heard, the E55 T is due around autumn here in Germany. Some people already saw this car at AMG in Affalterbach and one source even already saw the sales brochure. So it seems to be a sure thing.
Real life fuel consumption is around 15-21 litres / 100 km, depending how fast you're going. I testdrove a E55 and my average fuel consumption was around 19 litres. I fully accelerated whenever possible and also drove the car for around 10 km at full speed on the Autobahn.

    Hi Christian,

regarding item 10 on your list of FAQ: Based on your experience, how would the E55 acceleration 0-300 compare to a X50 turbo and a 542PS version (RS or similar)?

I don't have any comparison yet. But based on the fact that the E 55 AMG outruns the GT2 from 0-300 kph by a tiny margin (we already did it!), I think the X50 stands no real chance. Again: from 0-300 kph. From 0-200 kph, the X50 outruns the E55. It seems that the E55 has (as the SL55) a second power boost at speeds over 220 kph, pretty impressive.
BTW: I might have the chance to compare my E55 to a 996 Turbo tuned by Sportec (around 569 HP) soon. I know I stand no chance but I want to see how the results are in the upper speed range.
