    First car

Son's first car... No V8, no sportscar but very lovely and he is sooooo excited to drive it.

    Will pick it up tomorrow.

BMW 320d xDrive M Sport, latest G20 model, slightly used (BMW company car, under 15000 km) and fully(!) loaded (Alcantara with M sport seats, Steptronic Sport, M sport chassis with adaptive dampers, laser light, all driving and parking assist systems available, etc. etc. etc.).

Lease is slightly under 400 EUR per month for 42 months. Car is worth almost 70k EUR. Very safe car, at little bit too fast (236 kph and 0-100 kph in 6.8 seconds) but power and speed can be limited through the electronic key (phone). I will limit top speed only to 180 kph in the beginning. Smiley

It wasn't easy to find a car which is accepted by the insurance and without paying a fortune for it.

This is a very safe car and cost is acceptable. I was looking at cheaper cars but lease rates were not much different (I wanted a bigger car for him for safety reasons) and the safety level of the new 3 series is amazing. The drive assist systems also increase safety substantially, it is amazing what they can do (if my boy wants to test his guardian angel, I hope he never does).

Best part (for my son and for my pocket): Consumption is around 6 l / 100 km on average, topping out at around 7.2 liters. Amazing. Over 1000 km range on one fuel tank.

Engine is amazing too, Diesel mild hybrid(!), drives in sport mode like a sports car engine, very good throttle response, Steptronic sport also shifts very fast, I am impressed.

Didn't want to buy it because it is a Diesel and you never know in 42 months... Smiley

    Good choice; lucky kid.

    Re: First car

Lucky lad - my son was annoyed the crapbox Vauxhall Corsa passed its MOT - he was hoping I'd replace it but since he's off to Uni tomorrow, can't see the point!

Very nice! I'd probably go for the same color/wheel choice myself. RCs son is driving already? Man we're getting old.

    CGX car nut:

Almost… We waited too long with the decision and the car was gone.

This one is much better though, especially in the safety features department.

It may look like I spoil him but I really wanted something safe and something he can enjoy. I think we nailed it.

Most alternatives were around 200-350 EUR lease rate a month, not much difference.

Buying? Not now. I could have bought a halfway decent car for 20000 or so…not worth it, especially since none of these cars would have had the same safety features.

Most of his friends/classmates got a Mini or a Golf, cost is not much different, maybe 100-150 EUR less per month.

Btw: He gets only one full tank per month, everything else he needs to pay for himself. He is a very good kid, finishes school next year and I cannot complain about his grades. 😉

    Re: First car

Don’t know the  situation in the EU and Germany with new car inventories but here in the states the situation is dire. Most dealerships look like they are going out of business.  The local Audi Volkswagen Mercedes dealership has four new Audis, 6 new Volkswagen, and 31 new Mercedes.  Unfortunately, almost all the new Mercedes in inventory are Sprinter vans.  The BMW dealership isn’t any better.   I started to look for a new BMW 550 and can’t find anything even close to what I want. Guess I’ll wait until next year.

    Re: First car

Great choice!  After getting my oldest daughter a slightly used Mustang convertible for her first car at 16 I subsequently only bought new four door ‘safe’ sedans or SUVs for both of them. Lots of Sonata and Corolla and Tiguan and RAV4 3 year $200 a month leases.  Safe and cheap.  I’m finally done paying for either of their cars or houses. Both are homeowners, - college grad and masters is no good without a serious high paying job.
Your son is on the right track!  Enjoy and so glad you are @keyboard.

    Re: First car

Congrats but I think this car doesn't fit with a 18 yo boy. Target group for this car is 40+ yo salesman/woman or as a company car in general.

Better fit is the 1 seriers hatchback or a Golf or something along these lines. A dual color new Astra GSi looks very promising for first car.

    Re: First car

    good choice....safety is no 1

but your son will get more envy in the Beemer than in an Audi or a mere where everyone would think he is driving daddy's car.

does it matter ? no indecision

as long as he is comfortable !

    Re: First car

My wife got. the same car this year, just as a Touring-version…same color, same engine.smiley It‘s her sixth BMW 3 series Touring…she loves it.

We drove two weeks ago from our home to Austria and Italy and back home with one tank of diesel…over 1.000km - flat out on the Autobahn, Alpine passes,  4 people with luggage - great car.

It will take a long time until you can do this with an electric car…

    Re: First car

True that!  I love the 1000km range. You guys know I would use all of that at once, rinse repeat. Nothing like a car that allows me to dip my feet in either Atlantic or gulf on one stop.

    Re: First car

My mom has the same car as well, but In the US it is 330e as there is no diesel. Cool car for a 71 year old. Also cool car for a kid. I started with a Mercury Mystique V6 (Mondeo). Not as lux, but fantastic first car.

Smiley My son loves bigger cars (he wanted a RAM with a V8 or a Challenger V8, which are impossible to get cheap insurance for, he is 18 and are too dangerous for him as well), he wanted a A3 (new model) but in the end, we decided on the BMW because it was perfect (fully loaded with all safety features BMW has to offer, AWD and very low consumption, I managed 5.7 l / 100 km yesterday and didn‘t even try too hard).

Also, he is driving the car to school and if a teacher sees him, he can always say it is his dad‘s car. 😉 Mind you that driving your own car to school here in Germany is NOT a common thing, many teachers are politically on the left spectrum and want people to ride a bike to school and not drive a car. Sad reality here, there is even a written recommendation for parents to NOT let their kids use a car to get to school.

He spent the whole night in the garage 😂, so I guess he loves it but honestly, he really wanted this car, he doesn‘t like small cars.

My Mercedes dealer offered me a new A250e Hybrid for 529 EUR a month, delivery time 6 months. NO cars available, this is why lease deals are crappy right now. My BMW dealer had some sweet deals on various M135i xDrive he had in stock, even slightly cheaper than the 320d BUT a M135i is no car for a beginner and insurance would be astronomical.

Audi had a few A3 but basically same money as BMW, so we went for the 320d. This car is perfect. Drove yesterday 246 kph (speedo, ran into rev limiter) and car felt super safe at this speed, I was quite impressed. No worries though, my son‘s electronic key (smartphone) is limited to 180 kph. May sound fast but not for the Autobahn. Most small hatchbacks with 100 hp are faster.

Tesla has some sweet deals for the Model 3 (base model) but too fast for a beginner and my son hates EVs.
