    Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    Hey all,

I am trying to get a group of high-end SUVs to go off-roading with. I would like to know who is interested in taking their Cayenne (or anything else you have) off-road?? I know of a few places near Houston where we can off-road. Here is the list of vehicles from my family & friends that may go with me:

    '04 MB G500 (mine)
    '01 Lexus LX470 (brother)
'01 Land Rover Discovery SII (brother)
    '03 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (brother)
    '04 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (friend)

TexGX from my forum agrees to go on the next trip...he has Lexus GX470 with KDSS.

BTW, i do NOT plan on trashing my car. Thus, it will be light off-roading that we can all enjoy. Bring your family if you want.

I just need to know who to call. Anyone interested??

    Thanks.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

I'm interested. I am in Austin but I could certainly drive to Houston for some off-roading fun.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

Very cool. Actually, i go up to Austin often t o see my brothers. I off-roaded up there a few times.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    Thai,

If you end up doing some off roading, would you give me a heads
up? I would like to join you if it can work out. I have had the Cayenne
out once, with GMAustin, actually, and they are pretty amazing.

Just email or post here and I should see it.

Thanks, and happy trails to you...

Ok...my brother (Rubicon) and I are planning to off-road tomorrow (Saturday, 1/29/05) in Austin. We have 2 places that we can go...not too rough. Anyone who is interested please PM me ASAP. Include your cell phone number so that i can call you. We will most likely off-road in the afternoon.

    Hey Mark! Welcome to Rennteam.

I hope you two made connections. I went to Big Bend for a few days. That trip is always good for an attitude adjustment. I love it there; no TV, no internet, no cell phones, no traffic. It's great.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

Well, things turn up so i didn't get to off-road much. I will post ahead of time next time that we off-road.

    Thai.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    Hey Gary,

Ahhh. Big Bend. I haven't been there in way too long. It is indeed a great
place to get one's attitude adjusted. Take the River Road and not see
another human for EIGHT HOURS! Heavenly.

Did you stay at the Gage Hotel? A neato keeno place to stay.

I just upgraded my computer to a G5 iMac (what a great machine!
But I had a bit of trouble getting hooked back up to Rennteam.

So I missed Thai's invitation to go off road this time.

But I am here now. And I appreciate your thoughts.

    Gotta run for now...

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    Mark,

I stayed in the Chisos Lodge. The Gage is great but the lodge is right there in the middle of those spectacular mountains. I just can't stay anywhere else. There's nothing like waking up and seeing the sun slowly illuminate those cliff faces.

The only off-roading I did was up Old Ore Road to see Ernst Tinaja. I go there every time I'm in Big Bend now, it has such an other-worldly feel about it.

I hiked the Lost Mine Trail for the first time. That was very nice. A great view.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

Ah yes. My favorite way to enjoy it is to stay at the Gage the first night,
the lodge for the next two, the Gage again before heading back. If
time and $$$ permit. Oh, and I like the cabins, if you can get one. Much
    better than the hotel/lodge.

The Old Ore Road is a neat one. Sometime try driving north to south
from the entrance off Dagger Flat Road around dawn. Unbelievable
scenery, other-worldly as you say, and it has an eensy bit of off
road flavor to it as well.

Its 25 miles will take most of a day if you stop at the many interesting
    places along the way.

Argh! I'm about ready to pack up and go right now!!!!!

    Happy trails...

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

Ok, guys...another chance to test your skills in off-roading!! On March 19 (Saturday), i am planning to go off-road in LIBERTY, TX, which is east of Houston (on Highway 90). There is an off-roading site that is popular to Jeepers and it's not too difficult from what i hear.

    Anyone interested in joining me??

    PM me if you're interested.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

Last roll call...anyone interested this Saturday 3/19??

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    UPDATE:

    MEETING PLACE:

    Brookshire Brothers
    2325 North Main
    Liberty, Texas 77575

Gas station at this store: Conoco Gas Station

    Phone: (936) 336-7501

    TIME: 12:30 PM

    Temperature on 3/19: 72-75 degrees

There may be scattered/isolated showers after 3pm. Therefore, we're starting a bit early.

Thai. PM me if you have any questions.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

Thanks for the update Thai! I am going the other direction (Dallas) but I do appreciate you keeping us informed. How about a report after the event, maybe with some photos?

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    Here are some pics:

    http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9505

We all got stuck at some point...the mud was just too much.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

Great thread Thai! Thanks for sharing. I love the photos.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    GM,

What the pictures didn't show was the Cayenne, except for that one little
bitty image in the group. And, while I confess I didn't try two of the really
slimy mudholes (I don't have to get stuck to know when not to drive
through one if I don't really have to), I pulled out both the Lexus and
    the Jeep.

In fairness, neither were really stuck hard, just high centered a touch
and the mud was slippery than greased owl snot (and if you all don't
know, that is some really slippery stuff!) so the tires could not get
    a bite.

So, in the pictures, if Thai will find and post them, you will see that
the Cayenne is, indeed, a Jeep Recovery Vehicle. (And Lexus)

All in all, however, the street tired shall we say "higher buck" PUV's
did pretty darn well. Their traction control really worked. With proper
off road tires, the results would have been even more remarkable.

We had a good time, but rocks / hills would have been better. As
they were when we went to the ranch in Breckenridge, except many
    hours closer.

    Happy trails...

PS: In a couple of weeks, I am going to explore (again) the other aspect
of the Cayenne with the LSR group in a road trip to and around
Fredericksburg. Can you say -- ROAD TRIP? At speed, no doubt.

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    Mark,

I wasn't aware you were going on this trip with Thai. It looks like a lot of fun. The area around Fredricksburg is very nice as well. It's much more rocky there, which is more the off-road terrain I prefer. Is the LSR group going off-road somewhere there?

    Re: Off-roading In/Near Houston, TX

    Gary,

No, this event is a spring time tour that the Lone Star Region
of the Porsche Club puts on. It's on road but, I suspect, driven
somewhat, umm, vigorously, shall we say? I am positive they
have asked that the local constabulary suspend the speed limits
for this event, but I haven't heard if this has been agreed to yet.

The spring flowers ought to be spectacular then, too, and there
are a couple of routes to choose, including winery tours, so it
should be a really good trip.

If you would like to attend, I will send you the commander-in-
chief's email information and you can see if there is still room
    at the inn.

911's and Boxsters will be the order of the day, but I may bring
my tow strap to pull them out of the ditch, you know, just in case?

I can check the LSR website. BTW, we have our Bluebonnet tour coming up soon as well, also going through the same Hill Country area. Check for details on the HCR website.
