I was about to write the same. Safety is one of the reasons they are bigger.
With modern safety and construction techniques, there is no reason a car has to be as big as they are today. The Alfa 4C is pretty tiny and passes modern safety tests. Porsche could do something like that (and likely make it safer and drive better than Alfa did).

I guess that depends on the car pulling your trailer with the not-so-road-legal GT4CS on it
Well, a buddy is just about to make his CS roadlegal 
TÜV will give the nod after just a few "mods": (1) swap out the seats (the "ears" are not allowed), (2) mount a parking brake, (3) mount a streetlegal cat, (4) use engine mapping from roadlegal GT4 (certainly can be swapped later again... )

Yeah, 964 looks small. Interestingly, it weighs about the same as your car though.
That a the biggest complaint I have about my above 964. It is way too heavy.

My car has the 2-way sport seats. For track work, which option would you guys choose?
1) Hope someone sells me a 918-style bucket? (not finding any leads)
2) Buy a Recaro Profi XL covered in leather ($2600 USD with all mounting hardware), deal w/ loss of thorax airbag
3) Other options?
