That seems way too obvious. It would be better if you just happened to have climbing shoes on. Should offer good grip on the pedals too.

Besides which, driving shoes aren't funny. Bowling shoes are. Particularly rented ones with the size numbers on the heel!

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

I can sell you a nice pair of shoes that should work for ya....for the low, low price of around $450,000

I don't know anything about climbing shoes.

    Tell me more!

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

I don't know a great deal about climbing shoes, only what I have learned from some friends I have that do technical climbing. Here is a link to REI's selection of rock climbing footware: web page.

As you can see, climbing shoes do not have the welt conecting the sole to the upper that normal shoes have; the sole wraps around smoothly to the upper. I have also learned that climbing shoes are made with special rubber that provides exceptional grip.

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

I think the soles would be too hard and not flex enough to feel the pedals.. but maybe I am wrong.. I have Puma driving shoes. they work great!

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

I am reasonably sure you're wrong about that, but again, I'm no expert on climbing shoes either. But, just think of trying to scale a cliff face. It will be essential that your shoes allow you to feel the rock surface underfoot. The climbing shoes I have seen have extremely flexible soles.

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

And, since I can't seem to leave well enough alone, ...

A pair of these is on the way, too.

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

Those look like good choices Mike.

Let us know how they work out.

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

Or get these classic lambskin racing shoes with the suitable jacket by Chapal. IMO a racing dress couldn't possibly be more stylish than that.

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

additional on the climbing shoes; they are extremely flexible, and preferably bought one size too small... that way you are sure you can feel each and every grain of sand/rock.

Mike -I have those Pilotis and they work very well for me (but they're rather heavy...)

My basketball shoes are sort of heavy, too.

Maybe that's why I can't jump very high

Will the Pilotis make me slow behind the wheel

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

    Mike,

If you arent satisfied with the Pilotis I recommend giving the Oakley's a shot. I have large feet as well and they make my life a lot easier, especially when I am "driving enthusiastically" They have a nice heel but the rubber thins out towards the toes so more tactile response is translated to your toes than other shoes I use, plus they are as thin as possible while still being comfortable for a flat-footed guy like myself (people call me a "hobbit"!)

Do you have a web link?

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

    Sure,

    here are the shoes:
    http://oakley.com/catalog/colors/mens/footwear/industrial/thirteen_twenty/black_red

    here are the boots:
    http://oakley.com/catalog/colors/mens/footwear/industrial/oakley_race_boot/black_red/

For what it's worth I have worn the shoes at several autocross events and also have a pair of the boots for road racing The only major difference between the two (other than the extra heel/shin support of the boot) is that the boots are FIA-approved fireproof, made out of nomex or carbonx, or something like that.

Since I doubt you plan on exploding the CGT, I don't think fireproofing is one of your main concerns

    Cheers,
    Richard

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

    Thanks much, Richard.

One pair of 1320s on the way

I just can't help trying things that come from personal recomendations

P.S. The Piloti web site seems to have barfed my order from 2 days ago. The home page says they're transitioning to a new site on 11 March. I guess I'll make another attempt then.

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

Little late but these are made to your foot. Look OK too.

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

As a climber and a racer, and more importantly a racer who has driven in climbing shoes, I can't say I'd recommend it -- climbing shoes are meant to be worn sans socks, and as any climber will tell you they are not comfortable to be worn for prolonged period of time for activities other than climbing. They don't breathe much (make your feet feel al soggy like they have been in water or you were wearing a band aid) and usually stink to high heaven if you sweat in them. This is unfortunate, because climbing shoes are extremely grippy and form-fitting

If you are able to fit a pair of socks in your climbing shoes then they haven't been fitted properly...

    Re: CGT 1st drive report

    Mike,
I was just kidding about the climbing shoes, but I DO think you should give serious consideration to the bowling shoes.

They're stylish and yet whimsical, without taking themselves too seriously. Just like you.

    Mike,
    You've got my vote.
And we'll need pictures of you modeling your chic bowling footwear next to the bus. And please do not be offended when Herr Rohrl telephones to ask if he may emulate in kind. On the other hand, if Chris Bangle were to call...

They're OK for comfort. I like Mephisto better for that aspect.
