Is it possible to specify the tire brand on a new 987 order?

Sorry for all the questions I posted lately but they keep coming and coming and my local Porsche dealer is somewhat slow on providing them.

When placing my 987 S order I asked the sales person if it was possible to specify Michelin Pilot Sport to be used instead of other brands. He said he was going to ask about it.
It seems that, at least according with him, it's not possible to specify this from the factory. I've already seen 3 different tire brands on relatively close production date cars, all equipped with the Boxster S (18") wheels.

Anyone asked this before or knows if it's possible?

    Thanks,

no, it is luck of the draw
they just use whatever is available at the factory at that time

You should ask your dealer. I always specify the brand/type of tires I want. Luck is not acceptable if you spent that much money...

I was thinking the same thing, I want PS2's, maybe Pzeros at most but Conti's are not acceptable in such a car IMO. I will ask my dealer also

Re: Is it possible to specify the tire brand on a new 987 order?

Officially, it isn't possible. The dealer can't specify the tires you get. BUT: he can exchange them free of cost or for a small fee. For example if he has a show car with the same wheel/tire size.
I also heard of people getting different tires at the spot (Porsche factory) but of course not for free. The car exists production, goes to Exclusive department and there the tires may be changed. But as I said, to my knowledge this isn't free of charge.

I would also be careful if a dealer wants to swap the tires only from one car to another, especially 18'' and 19'' tires. They can be easily damaged if not removed correctly from the rim and this damage can be invisible to the human eye, creating a "time-bomb".

So the best thing if they agree to do so, is change both the tire and rim (without removing the rim of course) from one car to the other right?

Well then, I will just have to trust them in that they wont put Conti's on 997S who's customer ordered the -20mm

So what is wrong with Conti's? Of the three, are Conti's the worst? Which is the best? (Since I do have Conti's on my 997. or (not sure yet))

Re: Is it possible to specify the tire brand on a new 987 or

Its a matter of taste. In terms of handling and grip performance they are not the best of the three, so not the tire for a -20mm997S or GT3, etc. like the others are. They are more confortable and have better thread wear though. SO they are the worst or the best depending on what you prefer.

My 996 came with the OEM Conti's (previous generation) and I had to throw them away to the garbage with only a few k miles on them, I was so dissapointed that Porsche would fit these tires on a 911, their grip was horrible and squeaked like pigs on the bends like a winter tire when you got a little spirited! embarrasing.
They have improved in handling however since the first generation of Contisport though, but I will not drive Conti's again ever. Again, the current Conti's should be much better in handling and grip, but still no PS2's.

Re: Is it possible to specify the tire brand on a new 987 or

SPORT AUTO recently tested various sport tires in 19'' size. The best performer was the Michelin Pilot Sport 2, absolutely marvelous performance on dry pavement and during the braking tests.
I don't remember the Conti SportContact 2 results but I think the Conti was somewhere in the middle field on dry pavement.

The only disadvantage of the PS2 in my opinion: it wears off fast (I have only 4 mm profile left and I drove the PS2 only around 7000 km) and performance on wet pavement can be tricky in certain situations but nothing the PSM can't take care of.
For inexperienced 911 drivers, the PS2 may be also a little bit trick due to the razor sharp steering response. Combined with the new steering, this can be a pretty dangerous combination if someone isn't used to it or if someone generally has "nervous" steering habits.

Re: Is it possible to specify the tire brand on a new 987 or

All you have to do is ask the dealer to exchange the wheels/tires with another car they have in house that has the brand you want....most dealers will oblige.
