Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

Is this normal? They are completely down to the wire.

    Definitely not.

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

Which tires are they, Pzeros, contis... ?

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

1300?? No way is that normal...even with winter tires. Have you had your alignment checked? Adequate tire pressure?

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

1300 miles ?! That is no normal. Maybe you just drove too hard with low pressure in the tires ?

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

The Michelin ones, not exactly sure of which type.

Would it help that I forgot to mention I just did a trackday today and spent most of it sideways ;-) Unfortunately I was having so much fun I forgot about my tyres until the end when I realised they were knackered.

It is an awesome car on track allowing you to get it fully sideways in 3rd at 80mph and recover it so easily, even my gran could.

My car was the fastest there today although the two Rover hot hatches were nearly as fast and only have about 120bhp !!!! I got to drive one after someone very kindly let me have a go and I have to say it makes no sense to track a Carrera S when you can have twice as much fun in a car worth a thirtieth of the price.

the only downside to todays fun was a passenger in a Locost got carted off to hospital after it spun trying to keep up with me. I did feel slightly guilty but thats a risk you take in these track events.

So anyone know what size tryres I need and who is the cheapest in UK for them?

    Yes. That helps explaining it!

You might find that if you spent less time sideways you'd not only reduce tire wear, but also pull out a bigger lead on the hot hatches!

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

No those damn hatches were fast even when I was being sensible and containing the slides. One of them is for sale so the driver let me have a go in it and I have to say it was brilliant fun. I have never driven on slicks before but I managed to get within 2 secs of his best lap time so I might take up his offer and buy one and enter their race series.

The maddest thing was the third gear corner at the bottom of one straight where in the Carrera I was hard on the brakes and the car was twitching between understeer and oversteer all the way through. In the Rover I kept braking too hard for it, imagining my cars entry speed and the damn Rover was so stuck to the floor I couldn't do anything to upset it.
    Awesome fun !!!

Oh and if you do track your Porsche turn that damn PSM off as it really slows you down massively and takes all the fun out of putting your car on track in the first place.

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

Here is a pic of my tyre CLICKY

    Jesus!

You well and truly shagged those baby! You might want to think about doing a Porsche DE before you buy new tires. Also...do a search here and Rennlist for appropriate tire pressures for the track - you can't just run with standard pressures. You're probably lucky your car's still in one piece if you ran standard pressures...

    Re: Jesus!

Why would I want to do a Porsche DE when I have driven numerous top racing drivers around circuits before and they have all without exception been very impressed with my car control. Loads have also asked why I don't race but if I was going to do that, I would take up motorbike racing not cars anyway. Although after driving that hatch today on slicks I might be tempted into a cheap series just for the hell of it.

Naturally the tyres today got a hammering because I was showboating in front of a large crowd and the track itself had some seriously hard right handers where the track was greasy after it had rained and the front left was getting a hammering from large dollops of understeer as it battled for grip.

The car does definitely prefer a understeery stance in these high speed corners 90mph plus and unfortunately that will knacker any tyre if you go from dry to greasy and back to dry several times in one corner.

The fact that the hot hatches were on slicks was something else you forgot to mention!

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

Did I forget to mention they were actually race cars that were there for suspension setting up etc before the start of the new season

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

This is what happened last time I gave chase to a Hot Hatch that races in one of the UK series CLICKY

Unfortunately I wasn't in my Porsche at the time otherwise I would have gone faster

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

Depending on where you live in the UK - if your in the South head for Micheldever tyres in Micheldever (little village near Andover in Hants). They put 4 new boots on my V8 Esprit for Pounds850 (the rears on a V8 are 295*30*19 - similar to a 997S) they were Michelin's

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

I have used Micheldever before as they are normally excellent. I will call them in the morning if there are no other alternatives. Unfortunately I live in Nottingham and I can't really drive the car without attracting attention from the police and a possible load of points on my licence.

I have also spoken to Porsche guys this morning who have told me that those Michelins have soft shoulders for extra grip but unfortunately it also means that on track they can peel.

They suggested the Pirrelis are much better alternatives if doing trackdays.

    Ahhhh, the Craner curves, awesome.

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

Fabulous curves till you have to go on the grass to avoid a spinner. I once took to the grass on my bike at over 120mph and thought thats it I am a dead man. Miraculously I got to the other side without falling.

I like that James Brown-ish "Huargh-hehe-ha!" you utter when you overtake the Impreza(?) in the beginning of the film
    Looks like great fun.
What car were u in? Sounds like an automatic box?

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

I was in my old M3 and the clicking you can hear is the SMG paddles. You could never hear them when you were driving but for some reason they came up in the video recording.

The M3 is not that dissimilar to the Carrera S on a circuit with both understeer and oversteer in those fast corners but you can not change its attitude quite so dramatically with the throttle. The steering is also nowhere near as communicative as the Porsches.

Overall the Porsche is a lot more satisfying on track and road but I wouldn't say there was a big gap in performance between them.

Re: Need 2 new tyres after 1300 miles......

    jjr1,
Aren you not suppose to take car to the track until after break-in period (2000 miles)?

You could be a LOT faster.. CLEAN THOSE LINES UP !!

You could be a LOT faster.. CLEAN THOSE LINES UP !!

Great video... smart move staying pretty much straight on to avoid that spinner... looks like the M3 had a lot of understeer.... seemed like you had issues pulling in down to some apexes and then when you did it changed to oversteer.. or maybe you were just screwing around b/c you like to slide !!! Either way looks like a lot of fun..... do people freak out! like that when you approach to pass all the time?? THAT's the scary part......!
