    355 horses?

After seeing the r&t artical im just wondering how the 997 posted 3.9 0-60 and a 12.3 quarter. The corvette weights the same and has 400 horse and only posted a 4.5 0-60 and 12.6 quarter. The 997 beats a 360 modena. How is this accomplished w/only 355 horsepower?

    Re: 355 horses?

    traction?

    Re: 355 horses?

Mostly traction. Look at the 0-20 mph time compared to the Corvette. The 997S takes a HALF SECOND LEAD just in 0-20. That's due to the rear-engine allowing for extreme traction over the rear wheelsfor a much stronger/quicker launch. Also, 1st gear is steeper in the 911. And, we've had a debate here regarding whether the "355 h.p." isn't a bit underrated. See the thread below this about horsepower figures. But basically, the 911 jumps out to a .5 second lead right out of the hole, and then it maintains that lead fairly even through the rest of the quarter. Also, realize that PEAK horsepower does not equate usable horsepower. Gearing, rev range and horsepower have to be optimally matched for optimum performance. It's all these little details that make a Porsche a Porsche.

    Youre so right.
Ive always wondered why underpowered Porsches outran my 320BHP Audi everytime...and still do now that it's vice versa and I'm sitting in the Porsche myself.
It's as if Porsche has really, really finetuned the interaction between engine, clutch, gearbox, transmission, wheels etc etc almost to perfection.
I'm trying not to be pro-Porsche-biased here, but it's the only explanation I can think of. That or they REALLY underplay the actual BHPs of their cars.

    Any thoughts on this ?

    Re: 355 horses?

A little bit of both is what Carlos & I have been theorizing..

    Re: 355 horses?

very interesting. Thanks for the info. I sold my 03 m3 and I was looking at a boxster. But I really love acceration and I want a step up from the m3 in terms of performance. I want a wow factor when accerating I guess. Can any 997 owners help with this? Thanks.

    Re: 355 horses?

Aren't there any 997's at your dealer to test drive??

    Re: 355 horses?

Plus the Corvette is highly geared for milage improvements.

    Re: 355 horses?

Compare the final drive & gear ratios of the 997 vs. the 996. The gearing has been shortened in the lower gears to improve acceleration. If only Porsche would combine the lower gearing with a higher revving engine in the 997/997S. Guess the base engine's not up to high rpm like the GT3 engine is.

    Re: 355 horses?

The shorter gearing in the 997 I believe is to compensate for the larger diameter tires, in the end they are both equal.
