Re: Better 997 spare tire option

SORRY BUT THIS THING LOOKS AWFUL!!!!

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

Also, the tire is not secured in the front trunk. I can imagine all this little bumps appearing on the hood from the tire hitting the hood everytime he brakes hard and the tire goes forward and hits the hood. And finally, where is he going to place the flat? Leave it behind or leave his passenger behind?

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

Perfect! It wouldn't take much to create a simple securing mechanism.
The flat tire can go on the passenger seat and if there is a passenger (which is only >5% of the time in my case) he or she can use the back seats.
It may look awful but who sees it?
    I want one!

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

I'll pack a can of fix-a-flat, and call it a day. It makes a mess inside the wheel that you've got to clean when it's dismounted, but when you balance all of the odds, I think it's the best compromise. Toting that spare tire around in the trunk is a bit overkill, kind of like strapping your entire Snap-On master cabinet to the roof, just in case you need a tool...

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

and you nedd the tools to raise the car also!! By the way do you know how dirty is a flat tire?

It will make a mess wherever you put it

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

But at least we now have an option and we can all make our individual decisions on whether or not to take advantage of it.
Far better than to have no option at all.

I'm going to carry pontoons with my car,

In case I get in a flood, then I'll be prepaired.

I'm also going to make it bullet proof.

oh and a spare engine tied to the roof with string just in case.

That spare is a bad idea for many reasons - one not mentioned so far - how about DEMOLISHING the weight distribution of the car? That thing must weigh 40lbs.

Depends where you drive. On some trips I would be glad to throw the spare in the car. For some guys, in "exotic" areas, this would be a daily event.

On second thought, I'll probably just throw it in the car and forget about it (easier not to think about it until needed). I don't care about weight savings, .025 seconds acceleration loss, or fuel economy etc.

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

I think the spare tire is a good idea, since Porsche didn't think about including run flats on the car. Again, I just don't get this. You spend over $70k for a car, then they want $700 for a spare they should include. This is amazing!
I might just stay with my 996, then look at the Z06.

You're kidding right? You're going to decide what car to buy

based on an even that may NEVER EVER happen? What if you never get a flat ? Then won't you feel like a moron for picking a car with a spare and wasting all that space?

I mean are you serious? I hope you're joking.

Re: You're kidding right? You're going to decide what car to buy

Yes, very serious. It's just the last straw. I mean look at what you don't get for $70k. Leather int. is another example. Why don't they delete the passenger seat. It would save weight, and more importantly, $. If you needed one, I'm sure they would sell you one for about $1k. Of course, it would be more if you wanted the power seat option.

With all due respect I think your expectations are questionable. Everything costs money and I don't want anything for "free."

I expect Porsche stuff to be very expensive, compared to GM and Ford, and it doesn't bother me because it's the best quality money can buy. Unless you steal it or are lucky, you have to pay a premium for the good stuff; it is a fact of life.

I'm just happy that Porsche is providing a spare for those who want one.

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

The Z06 will be a very fast, very crudely executed by comparison, sports car. I've owned Corvettes. They are cheaper, because they ARE cheaper in every respect. If you value workmanship, materials, driving dynamics, and DETAILS, you've got to close your eyes and bite your lip and blow-off your standards driving a Vette. And then there's all the people with the #3 and #8 stickers in the back window of their trucks hooting and hollering at you......

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

Now you really don't believe Porsche's stuff is the best you can buy, now do you?

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

I'll answer for MMD.... For under $100K??? YES, absolutely, without a doubt. In fact, EVERY SINGLE magazine that has done sportscar comparison tests since the release of the 997 has ranked it first, price-independent. Then when you get twitchy about the money, the creaky and plasticky Corvette comes into play. So it all depends on how the dollars and the justification of spending those dollars works out for the individual buyer. Back when I had less money to spend, I had to settle for a Corvette, and I enjoyed that car for what it was, it gave me my money's worth. But, since I can now manage to scratch a check for the 997S, I don't want anything to do with the Corvette. Or the Viper, or the Maserati, or the Jag, or anything else within a stone's throw of the price range. A Ferrari would be nice, but jeez, that IS more money than I can sensibly spend.

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

69 is correct Porsche is really a RELIABLE sports car

what exactly can someone hold against Porsche that favors for example Maserati? The n.1 car for problems

Re: Better 997 spare tire option

how can i get one,and what is the cost?

    Bottom line

    1. It is a 996 kit
    2. Gradyex drove with it on his 997's front and rear axles without any obvious problems- no PCNA official recommendation on this
    3. $728 USD from Sunset Porsche, see rennlist link below:

    Re: Bottom line

Don't forget there is also that 997 unit. Was shown here strapped into the back seat a few weeks ago. Ask your dealer if you can get one; may not be avail in usa. Also, the Boxster and 996 have a full-diameter-stowed spare that is different from Gradyx's (probably cheaper, ahem, less expensive).
