What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

For me 280hp was not enough to trade in my 260hp Boxster S... 295hp is a different story.
I'm convinced that Porsche will come with a 295hp Boxster (cabrio) soon though.

Mmmmmm... I'm not sure if they will stick a 3.4 in the Boxster.

They have positioned the Caymen above the Boxster brand, and I think they will try and keep the seperation by not pushing the Boxster to 3.4.... A 3.4 Boxster would then sit alongside the Caymen...

Anyway what would they call it? We have an S... perhaps a GT... Nar they will leave that kind of thing for the next Caymen

    Totally agree.

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

Porsche is making a big mistake
The mistake starts with the name
The Cayman is to close to the Boxster and to close to the 997.
The Cayman will steel costumers from the 997 and the Boxster and not from the competion.
The sports coupe market is also a market which will not grow in the future.
The only growing market are the SUV's and Hybrid
Wendie want to score a point before he leaves.

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

I must say positioning a car only marginally cheaper than a 911 is a gamble for Porsche. I am eagerly awaiting my Boxster S. I chose Boxster S as I wanted the next best thing to a 911, which is odd as I have never driven one and if I did I may think it was crap!!!!!

Having poduct even closer in price holds no attraction for me.

I may be getting what some people will undoubtably argue is a "poor man's Porsche" but it is the best Pounds40K you can spend on a sports car.

The Cayman will really be the stupid man's Porsche (unless it drives better than a 911) and to call it "cayman" even worse.....I'll stick with the entry-entry level.

Can I be controversial here and say maybe, just maybe, the basic 911 is a stupid man's Cayman? I am guessing the latter will be nimbler because of its size and better handling because it is mid engined and as quick because it is lighter? Please! no offence meant to 911 owners!

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

    a 911 is never a stupid option!!!

I know, I know, I was very impressed when I drove one, but the Cayman has all the ingredients to be a better drive?

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

Right now the rear seat would make all the difference to me and my family, and that would be enough for me to go for a 997 or 997S instead of a Cayman S.
Handling and power wise etc I believe the difference will be marginal if compared to a standard 997, maybe the right driver in the Cayman S will be able to pass an average driver in a 997, I do not now and I do not care so much. Overall the 997 drives well enough for most of us to not even touch the limit and those who can take it further have several options with 997S, gt2, gt3 and TT.

...I hear a can of worms being opened here

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

I love convertibles and so I would not consider a Cayman.

However, I would not be surprised if some people would delay buying a 987 S expecting another great idea by Porsche such as a Cayman cabrio!

I love Porsches but I have to say I do not get this one.

By the way, apart from the easy joke of calling the car Gayman, when I think of cocodriles, i do not think of fast agile animals, does anyone? I tend to think of reptiles that move kind of slow. Carrera, well, what can I say...all of you know, its a great name. Boxster, sounds good and like a car's name. Cayenne, sounds more agile than Cayman that's for sure.

I guess this proves that more money does not necessaraly make a company more inteligent or agile in its thinking.

I wouldn't blame the company as a whole, although I understand your frustration , I would blame the Marketing geniuses to come up with crap like this .

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

Boxster has always been called the Poor mans 911... Well for me the Caymen fits this role even better!!!

Whilst I like the idea of a cheaper coupe alternative to the 911, I think they should have made more effort to make it more individual.

The perfect situation, which weve discussed a ton of times, would have been to release a Cayman RS.. stripped out racer. 300bhp, stripped out, nice and light... Now that would have been good and a very different to the 911 (Obviously not GTS and GT3RS) and Boxster.

Actually, I don't think so. They just released the S with 280 hp. Why on earth would they swap the engine for a 3.4l if they want the cayman to be positioned above the Boxster.

And another interesting question. If they decide to release a "base" Cayman what engine would they put on? A 2.7 would make it equal to the base boxster. A 3.2 does not have any logic and neither a 4th engine.

Oh well, let's way and see. I'm keeping my april build S

    dreamcar,

Am I going to have to start calling you a hairdresser or a poor man's Porsche driver?? Handbags at dawn sir!

The Cayman just doesn't make a great deal of marketing sense to me but I guess we shall have to wait and see the actual car before making a final judgement. I think the cars silhouette (as indicated in the spy pics) is far too close a resemblance to the 911 and may damage sales of that model as a result. It all looks a bit like the old BMW one sausage just cut into different lengths styling philosophy, a philosophy BMW have abandoned over the last 3 years in an effort to broaden their sales.

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

That is certainly a blow to Boxsters' owners not to fit the 3.4 engine in...I'd be upset...
BTW, my Porsche salesman say the 997S/997 owners will have soon a reason to be upset too.
Bottomline, it is urgent to wait what Porsche is doing with their product range, engines and potentially fitting DSG gearboxes...
I would not be comfortable buying a 987S with 280hp now...
So I'll enjoy my '02 S in the meantime :-)

I've been called a lot worse, I can assure you.
For me the 280bhp performance of the Boxster "s" is more than enough. And I like the open top, so no, I don't regret going for the Boxster instead of the Cayman. I still have sleepless nights over the Boxster's cost so no way would I even consider spending even more on a car with a performance advantage I just wouldn't use.

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coupe?

Different market - it's to tempt lotus elise buyers but their pricing strategy seems a bit high. If you have that kind of money why not go for a 997? It would be wiser to position at trhe same price as the S if not a little higher, say Pounds40k base. The two cars are similar but the power hike would command a slight increase in price and not alienate buyers of TT's and Lotus Elises looking to move to something faster and in the case of the Lotus something t hey can get into!!

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coup

The only reason I see why Porsche is releasing a 295HP coupe version of the Boxster is to have an excuse to later introduce a more economical base version priced maybe a bit bellow the standard Boxster since its coupe, dealers are asking for such a model for their sales since the new Boxster is not selling as well as it should be, they don0't want more expensive Boxsters since they have the 911 for that which steals those sales, they want a moire accesible model to attrack more new buyers.

Otherwise, creating a Boxster coupe with performance so close to the base 997 is suicidal, since even though performance may be similar, price will also be and the "general public" will, most of the time, go to the 911 due to its image and cult icon. The general public who can afford a Cayman/Boxster coupe for the price of a 911 will get the 911, not the Boxster coupe, the normal opentop Boxster S has an appealing advantage in that its a cabrio and the 911 cab's pricetag is not close so not a option, but the Cayman is a coupe. It doesn't have the "911" appeal for the general public nor does it have the opentop posibility of the 987S, its in the middle of nowere with this configuratio of 295HP, coupe and in betwwen 987S and 991 in pricetag. This canabalisation would not happen if the Cayman were a Boxster Coupe RS version (not a chance IMO) which appeals to sportcar purists who don't care as much about the image but rather of the potential of such a car and would have a perfectly fair chance agaist a GT3 in sales.

Another posible reason for this Cayman S is to definately kill the base 997 and leave the 997S as the standard 911, so they can charge 10k than wioth the 996 more for the standard 911.

I believe this is the main intention, to eliminate the basic 911 when the facelift MKII comes out after the Turbo. Cayman gets 320 and Carrera S (or by then Carrera) 370/375. At least with this kind of HP gap it's justifiable.

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coup

Can someone tell me in a logical way and with facts way this would hurt the 997 sales and Porsche!!!??I'm absoutely sure the Cayman will be a huge success and find new first time Porsche owners. I can't wait to see it and i'm seriously thinking to trade in my Boxster....

I don't think it will take much away from the 911 at all.....just maybe a few hardcore guys wanting something more than a Boxster in terms of performance, but not wanting to pay the 911 price. On the other hand if Porsche has their way the Cayman S with a few options will cost near a base 911......so there goes the "first time" Porsche owners theory....at least in my opinion. Who knows how well it will do.....many of us (myself included) was looking for a *reasonably* priced coupe with the 280Hp 3.2L instead of a hugely more expensive 3.4 version.....maybe one will follow. I'm still undecided and will wait for pricing to make a decision.

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coup

I agree Mike...i just ask myself why some on this board are so scared of INNOVATIONS????But maybe it is like someone said before on this thread: Porsche has no idea what they are doing

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coup

Will wait for the 300+hp ClubSport with DSG gearbox. Until then my 987 S will be an excellent fair weather drive.

By the way, what a nice combo; one Boxster S and one Cayman CS DSG!

Re: What do 280hp 987S owners think of the 295hp Cayman Coup

You know what guys, this would be VERY funny indeed - if Cayman sells very well and PAG decided to come out w/ a Cayman Cabriolet...for those who enjoy pure driving dynamics plus open air at the same time!! Wheee....what a predicament!!

The HP figures for the 911 have never been static. In two years, the base 997 can be at 355 and the S could move up to 385. The Cayman would then be free to move up to 325 in three years.
