A little bit more on the Cayman S, not much though.

    Hi

    Here are two images:

    Re: CAYMAN S

The 3.4l powerplant, how does that work, is this the old 996 engine? Or is something entirely new?

    Re: CAYMAN S

Basically becuase the 996 and the Boxster engine share the same origin but with different displacement. Now the bore of the Cayman/Boxster has reached the bore of the first 996 engine and thus should be basically similar with some modern touches since the first 300HP-3.4l 996 engine is 7 years old.

I'm sure its the same engine with some general enhancements....doubt if its all new.

de-tuned by 5 BHP ...just to keep the Carrera buyers happy-

Or this is an indication that with the weak $ ratio the price of Carrera will go up .

    Re: CAYMAN S

I wonder if this car will be lighter than the Boxster (coupes often are lighter than roadsters)...

    Re: CAYMAN S

the next question is this... there will be a base Cayman if they're releasing the Cayman S first... just like what was done to the Cayenne... what engine will they put in the base Cayman? 3.2L Boxster S engine and price it below the Boxster S to justify a coupe with the same engine as a roadster and price is cheaper?

    Re: CAYMAN S

de tuned? if memory serves the original 3.4 litre (pre e-throttle) was 295

I wonder if Porsche had a bunch of 295HP 3.4s laying around and someone said......"I know, lets put it in a Boxster Coupe and charge $10K-$15K more for it!"......probably was instantly promoted.

That motor was 300hp DIN and 296hp SAE. This new motor is detuned to 295Hp DIN and will be around 291Hp SAE (USA rating)

It is all those replacement engines with RMS failure that has been renovated

You bet there will be a base Cayman IMO. My guess of engine will be 2.7l of the base Boxster in order to offer an attractive price version, not the 3.2l of the Boxster wich would be redundant with only 15HP difference.

    Re: CAYMAN S

thanks Grant...i see it was the DIN vs SAE issue.

I'll respectfully disagree with that. To me a 240HP Porsche anything is way behind the times......especially in coupe form. There is just too much compitition out there with lots more HP to contend with. I also think Porsche is not trying to produce any sort of "value" car at this time
and won't be in the future. I do believe we will see a base Cayman in 3.2L 280HP form though......at least it will be respectable.....IMO.

    Re: CAYMAN S

A 280HP base Cayman when there is a 295HP Cayman S would make no sense, there has to be at least a 25HP difference minimum. How about an in between 2.9l 260HP Cayman

    That's a new idea.....but don't think it will happen.

Don't forget the 3.4L Coupe will have a lot more torque compared to a 3.2L, so while the HP difference may not be that much, the actual preformance difference probably will.....just like the performance diff between the base 911 and the S version. If there's enough difference between those two....(not a large amount) there will be enough between a 3.2 / 3.4 Boxster coupe.

    Re: CAYMAN S

I pity the Porsche engrs who have to sit in at product planning meetings with sales and marketing . Imagine the following directive :
"You ( engineers) MUST forever artificially restrain the cars so that over all performance envelope slots in with base MSRP. Base Cayman must perform above base Boxster and never surpass Boxster S. Cayman S must perform above Boxster S and never surpass base 997 , etc., etc.. "
It's getting ridiculous- the poor Boxster gets constrained even more .

    Re: CAYMAN S

Following the pattern of the Cayenne, the base Cayman must have a motor from Volkswagen....

    Re: CAYMAN S

Is it not the case that if you put the old 996 engine in the Boxster it loses some HP because of the different air intake?

    Re: CAYMAN S

    Well said !

Not just the Cayenne, but the 356 at first, the 914, the 912E, the 924. Almost all models. Fortunately, VW does not make any more boxter engines and Porsche has a large selection of engines to choose from today.

Fluff? Are you kidding? This thing will be highly respected. It will be one of the best handling cars on the planet! You see, speed is nothing without control.

I meant the intro video is fluff (pretty lame IMO).......not the car, it should be great!
