Fascination, drivability, agility, deceleration - why is the Porsche 992 GT3 the perfect sports car? Now world-exclusive in the super test!

    Christian Gebhardt

     06/06/2021

Review: Thursday, September 17, 2020, 2:05 p.m. - my cell phone rings. At the other end of the line is Porsche. Whether I would have time tomorrow to set the Nordschleife lap time for the super test of the Porsche 992 GT3. A question that is not a question for the sports driver's heart. Starting shot for an extraordinary super test production of an even more extraordinary vehicle.

At this point, the GT hero is still driving around wearing black camouflage film, and the official presentation is still over five months away. Later Andy Preuninger (General Manager GT Road Vehicles) will tell me that the idea "Come on, let Gebhardt drive" was born spontaneously while barbecuing at Manthey. At this point the Porsche GT team had every reason to relax.

On Monday, September 14th, the factory duo Lars Kern and Jörg Bergmeister burned the official fabulous lap times of the new 911 GT3 on the Nordschleife asphalt. Porsche was now faced with a luxury problem: they had rented the Nordschleife as an alternative date for the Friday afternoon of September 18 - just in case it had rained on Monday. Since all the official Porsche times were already in the can, the early super test came into play. Thanks to Flacht for the trust.

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), NordschleifeDaniel Wollstein

An extraordinary super test: With the "BB-PV 5005" still camouflaged, development pilot Lars Kern set the fastest time (6.55.2 min) for the GT3.

Meanwhile, my brain switched from relaxation to tension. When the Porsche call came in, we were taking photos of the Subaru BRZ Final Edition in the old paddock before the afternoon visit to the Nordschleife was to end with the super test lap of the 200 hp Japanese. Actually. Switching from the BRZ to the 992 GT3 - I can tell you that worlds like the one between the Cessna and the Eurofighter collide.

    Neutral, more neutral, 992 GT3!

The next day, first meeting with "BB-PV 5005" in Welcherath at the Porsche development base. "BB-PV 5005" is the 992 GT3 with which Jörg Bergmeister completed his ring laps. While I am wiring the Race Navigator measurement technology, Jörg smiles and tells me something about the fact that the front axle of the 992 GT3 is better than the front axles of most of the racing cars he has driven in his racing career. Um, just for the ignorant - the man has won pretty much every prominent GT race in the world in his career with RSR and Co. Sure, brand ambassadors have almost signed a contract with enthusiasm for their company's products, but I appreciate Jörg as being honest.

A little later, when the motivated 992 GT3 pounds through the Hatzenbachbogen at 169 km / h, I almost have a guilty conscience that I briefly questioned Jörg's racing car comparison. My first thought in view of the high-precision steering behavior, the massive mechanical and aerodynamic grip and the fantastic driving stability in the limit area: They cheered you on a cup racing car with slicks under the camouflage film.

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), NordschleifeHans-Dieter Seufert

The front axle steers with high precision without the rear axle being overwhelmed. Without exaggeration: the balance of the 992 GT3 is simply perfect!

This is of course not the case, but the incredibly neutral driving behavior of the 992 GT3 in the limit area is hard to remind you of a thoroughbred racing machine. "A road-legal racing car" is a hackneyed phrase in automotive journalism - but with the 992 GT3 it hits the nail on the head.

What is the enhancement of the adjective "neutral"? Neutral, more neutral, 992 GT3! In the subsequent Hatzenbach alternating bends, the new Nordschleife hero makes another hackneyed phrase socially acceptable again: "Runs as if on rails." The communication between the front and rear axles has never worked so perfectly in any production sports car before. Or to put it another way: the front and rear axles are so ideally matched that you don't even notice the slightest phase lag. The front axle steers with high precision without the rear axle being overwhelmed. Without exaggeration: the balance of the 992 GT3 is simply perfect!

While the current wing 911 shines with a splendid mix of precision, agility and driving stability, the coordination of the front and rear axles of the previous model, the 991.2 GT3, has not yet reached such a top level. At that time, a direct, almost a bit pointed front axle met a rear axle that was not quite as sure-footed.

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), interiorHans-Dieter Seufert

The direct steering gives you high-precision feedback without causing unnecessary unrest in the vehicle. Incidentally, load changes are a foreign word for the 992 GT3.

In the border area on the Nordschleife, this coordination then sometimes led to unwanted surprise effects, such as in the 7/2017 Supertest in the courage curve. The rear axle was unable to follow the somewhat overly motivated articulation here on the super lap. The result: an all of a sudden cross-stay in one of the Nordschleife passages, where you want a reliable partner at the limit.

And this partner is called the 992 GT3. Especially on the fast stretches of the route like double right airfield, high-speed links at the Schwedenkreuz or the aforementioned courage curve, the GT model delivers as high a level of confidence in the border area on the Nordschleife as no other sports car has achieved before. The direct steering gives you high-precision feedback without causing unnecessary unrest in the vehicle. Incidentally, load changes are a foreign word for the 992 GT3.

    The perfect drivability

For example, the question of whether the compression in the Fuchsröhre can be operated at full load does not arise at all. Deeply relaxed - and that's not a journalistic exaggeration - you drive down into the hole at 264 km / h. The GT3 touches down very easily - incidentally, for the only time on the entire lap. There are other patients who seem to be scratching an underbody autograph on the Nordschleife asphalt every kilometer.

The much more exciting question in the Fuchsröhre: With how much speed can you take the neuralgic curb on the left side? 167 km / h in the 991.2 GT3 to 190 km / h in the 992 GT3. The calm and the slight body movements of the vehicle when driving over curbs, bumps or knolls also document the unprecedented level of driving stability.

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), exteriorHans-Dieter Seufert

On the aero side, the “normal” GT3 is now emulating its RS brothers. For the first time in a Porsche series vehicle: the rear wing with gooseneck suspension.

We're used to the fact that the GT team takes a significant step forward from model generation to model generation. With the 992 GT3, the Gallic village of lateral dynamics, Flacht, managed two development steps at once. Given the racetrack performance, one wonders whether they haven't forgotten the RS logo on the rear. Original sound from Andy Preuninger: "Since we know that the next RS will be so sick, we've already allowed ourselves a little more with the GT3 this time."

The 992 GT3 starts with the optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, which we already know from the 991.2 GT3 RS and GT2 RS, but in a slightly different mix. Don't panic, the extreme grip level and the fascinating cornering forces that the tire conjures up are still suspicious of slick. All around, the slippers are 10 mm wider than on the 991.2 GT3. On the tire side, the optional tires Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R and Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport RS are currently still in approval testing.

On the aeros side, too, the normal GT3 is already emulating its RS brothers. For the first time in a Porsche series vehicle, a hanging rear wing is installed (gooseneck suspension). With the help of sliding elements in the front diffusers and the setting of the rear wing angle, the aerodynamic balance of the vehicle can be individually adjusted. Four different opening cross-sections can be selected in each of the front wheel arch liners. The rear wing can be adjusted in four positions (the four rear wing angles in degrees: –2.5; 0; 3; 5.2). It goes without saying that the 992 GT3 starts the Supertest in the performance position for maximum possible downforce.

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), exteriorHendryk Meyer

As the first series 911, the GT3 now has a double wishbone layout instead of the previously known MacPherson strut construction, which already exists in a similar form in the 911 RSR, 911 GT3 R and 911 GT3 Cup racing cars.

"The secret of the 992 GT3 is the know-how that we have interlinked all performance-related topics very well, so that they give you real confidence. The chassis is heavily involved. Over 50 percent of the time, it is the front axle that does is unbelievably transparent, and of course the measures that we have taken on the rear axle. We now have complete uniball bearings on the rear link level. That was not the case with the 991.2 GT3. We have also made the rear-axle steering curve much more progressive. You basically have to compensate for the faster front axle, "says Andy Preuninger.

As the first series 911, the GT3 now has a double wishbone layout instead of the previously known MacPherson strut construction, which already exists in a similar form in the 911 RSR, 911 GT3 R and 911 GT3 Cup racing cars. "With the MacPherson concept we were simply at the limit with the GT2 RS and the last models - nothing more was possible," explains the general manager of GT road vehicles.

The objectives of the new axle construction in brief: Increase in performance through progressive camber changes and increase in camber stiffness. Increase in drivability and precision by reducing the roll pole change, maximizing the brake buckling compensation (anti-dive) and improving the spring behavior.

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), HockenheimringHans-Dieter Seufert

With deceleration values of up to 16.0 m / s² on the racetrack, the 992 GT3 has also made significant progress on the brakes compared to its predecessor (991.2 GT: maximum 13.4 m / s²).

Even if it cannot be compared 1: 1 due to the changed articulation points, the different spring rates on the front axle are fascinating. Andy Preuninger: "With the double wishbone front axle you can drive a significantly tighter spring. We now have a 100 mm spring in the front, while we used a 45 mm spring in the 991.2 GT3. We now also use a great ZF Race damper - the CDC Evo. It has also made another jump. It reacts in less than ten milliseconds in all load conditions. " The 991.2 GT3 still used Bilstein dampers.

    The high-speed cathedral

With deceleration values of up to 16.0 m / s² on the racetrack, the 992 GT3 has also made significant progress on the brakes compared to its predecessor (991.2 GT: maximum 13.4 m / s²). Fascinating are not only the ultra-late braking points and how suspiciously a racing car you can brake into the curve with the vehicle, but also how finely controllable the brake is. By the way: unlike the 992 series models with an electric brake booster (eBKV), the 992 GT3 continues to use a vacuum brake booster.

The subject of weight, especially with the 992 GT3, offers just as great potential for fascination as the grandiose chassis set-up. While others only preach lightweight construction, but then get heavier, the GT crew is proving to the contrary that, despite the popular excuse of the approval regulations, it can still be easier - respect, flat!

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), exteriorHans-Dieter Seufert

At 1,470.5 kilos, the new GT3 weighs a good 22 kilos less than the 991.2 GT3. The lightest possible configuration with manual transmission only weighs 1,418 kilos.

Applause please - at 1,482 kilos, the BB-PV 5005 in the Nordschleife trim weighs ten kilos less than the 991.2 GT3 (1,492 kilos). Nordschleife trim? For safety reasons, the winged 911 has a racing bucket seat on the driver's side for the hot ride in the Eifel. In Hockenheim, the 992 GT3 then goes back to chasing racing lines with the standard and lighter full bucket seat. Weight of BB-PV 5005 then: 1,470.5 kilos. Incidentally, in the lightest possible configuration with manual transmission, the GT3 weighs only 1,418 kilos. Wow!

The GT3 not only brings tears of joy at the limit, but also in view of the attention to detail when it comes to lightweight construction and weight reduction. Where does the 992 GT3 save compared to its 991.2 predecessor? The diet in brief: front apron minus 1,300 grams, rear apron minus 500 grams, carbon front cover minus 1,225 grams (instead of sheet metal front cover on the 991.2 GT3), optional carbon lightweight roof minus 900 grams (compared to the sheet metal roof of the 991.2 GT3), rear windows and rear window minus 2,377 grams, 40 Ah lightweight battery minus 5,400 grams, rims on the front axle minus 1,400 grams, roll bar minus 2,600 grams, engine minus 7,589 grams.

Speaking of the engine, or let's call it the divine high-speed cathedral in the rear of the 911: The perfection of the 992 GT3 engine with the internal code name MA275 (991.2 GT3: MA177) relates to three topics: weight reduction, drivability and fascination.

Andy Preuninger reveals in detail how the GT team was able to reduce weight on the engine side: "The dry sump tank that we had on the back of the engine was always made of sheet metal. It now consists of a rather complex composite material. 8 kilos on the back of the engine. We had previously controlled engine mounts. So we asked ourselves whether we actually still need them, since they weigh 3.5 kilos. We have redesigned the cylinder head and are now virtually integrating the engine as a load-bearing element the body. "

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), exteriorHans-Dieter Seufert

In direct comparison with the competition, no unit reacts more immediately and greedily to accelerator commands than the optimized boxer six (code name MA275).

The lighter Mahle pistons save a total of 127 grams compared to the Pankl pistons in the 991.2 GT3. The lighter stainless steel exhaust system (minus 10.8 kilos compared to the 991.2 GT3) overcompensates for the additional weight of the new individual throttle valve system (plus 5 kilos) and the gasoline particle filter. While other vehicles suffer vocally bitter OPF disasters, the four-liter vacuum cleaner, which celebrates up to 9,000 tours, continues to be the undisputed voice of the sports car scene.

And the question doesn't actually arise of how drivable the six-cylinder boxer is. In direct comparison with the competition, there is currently no unit that reacts more immediately and greedily to accelerator pedal commands. And something else: With 510 hp, the 992 GT3 is perfectly motorized for ambitious amateurs.

Fuchsröhre up to the hole? Full! From the mine through the boiler over the waves to the courage curve? Full! Döttinger Höhe through the Antoniusbuche arch to the left? Full! All passages on which you are much more relaxed on the road in the 992 GT3 than in higher-powered HP heroes.

The 992 GT3 cracks a large part of the more powerful competition on the Nordschleife - not through engine power, but through its lateral dynamics talent. And what does the stopwatch say? With exactly 7.04.74 minutes, the 992 GT3 laps the Nordschleife faster than the 991.2 GT3 RS once did on its super test lap (7.05.41 minutes).

    Thanks, Walter!

    Porsche 911 GT3 (992), HockenheimringHans-Dieter Seufert

Group photo with Walter Röhrl, Andy Preuninger and the chassis experts Jan Frank and Michael Mayer in Hockenheim.

Walter Röhrl, Uwe Seeler, Ayrton Senna - the first of my idols once lapped the Nordschleife in the 887 hp Porsche 918 Spyder in 7.04 minutes. Since I'm anything but a Walter Röhrl as an ambitious amateur, the super test lap time speaks all the more in favor of the 992 GT3. By the way: I only drove a total of four laps on the Nordschleife with the high-flyer before the super test time was over. Another indication of the great drivability.

Why will this super test be remembered for a long time? After the GT3 at Hockenheim was at the top of the Supertest best list with a fabulous time of 1.45.8 minutes, "Walter" suddenly appeared in our pit.

Walter just wanted to experience the GT3 on the Gripwunder Cup 2 R. Let's go - BB-PV 5005 is still there in temperature-controlled socks. Walter, can I ride a lap with you?

Why is "Walter" my idol? Sure, even at the age of 74 he still drives a smooth, creamy driving style as if from another planet, but there is one thing I appreciate much more about Walter Röhrl: Walter is still the same down-to-earth person who gave me 15 years ago, when I was a small intern at Porsche, that you offered. A true champion, and a worthy finale for an unforgettable super test.

    NÜRBURGRING NORDSCHLEIFE

    20th

    a maximum of 20 points

Not only on the Nordschleife does the 992 GT3 turn out to be a road legal racing car. The sensational balance, the extremely good driving stability and the high aerodynamic and mechanical grip level have a motorsport-like character. Get in, drive off and be quick immediately - the 992 GT3 shines with unprecedented drivability. The relatively low engine power compared to other sports cars also contributes to the exceptional driveability. The typical high-speed sections of the route on the Nordschleife are therefore much more relaxed than in extreme horsepower heroes.

    HOCKENHEIM-RING SMALL COURSE

    20th

    a maximum of 20 points

Driveability means speed. Thanks to its perfect balance and sensational drivability, the 992 GT3 also beats competitors with significantly more horsepower on the GP circuit in Hockenheim. As in a thoroughbred racing car, the GT3 can be used to brake extremely late into the curve. Unlike the production 911, the GT3 does not have the eight-speed PDK of the second generation, but continues to rely on the adapted seven-speed PDK from the 991.2 GT3 / GT3 RS (weight advantage over "PDK II": over 20 kilos). Pure fascination: the extremely fast downshifts when braking.

    ACCELERATION / BRAKING

    9

    a maximum of 10 points

Typically Porsche: The launch control of the seven-speed PDK also works like clockwork on the 992 GT3, even with several sprint starts in a row. Thanks to the optimized aerodynamics and the Michelin option tires, the GT3 shines with high deceleration values from 200 km / h.

    WIND TUNNEL

    10

    a maximum of 10 points

Even in the delivery position (83 kg), the total downforce of the 992 GT3 is higher than that of the 991.2 predecessor in the performance setting. Total downforce in the performance setting now: 144 kilos. In development, the car spent more than 160 hours in the wind tunnel.

    LATERAL ACCELERATION

    10

    a maximum of 10 points

The lateral acceleration is strongly dependent on the driving style. Although the 992 GT3 is on the road with extensive chassis modifications (including double wishbone front axle layout) and more extreme tires (Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R), the maximum lateral acceleration values do not differ measurably from its predecessor. However, the curve speeds speak a different language.

    36 METER SLALOM

    15th

    a maximum of 15 points

Even in the 18-meter slalom, the new GT3 impresses with an average speed of 77.2 km / h. In the 36-meter slalom, with 155 km / h, it remains just behind the 911 GT3 RS measured in 2018, but clearly dominates its competitive environment. The driving behavior remains neutral for a long time, at the limit the rear starts to push in a controllable way when turning hard.

    EVASIVE TEST

    15th

    a maximum of 15 points

As in the slalom, the GT3 lags slightly behind the GT3 RS, but maintains a respectful distance to the competition and its direct predecessor. The handling is easy to describe: brutal grip, support and reaction. At first you don't dare to give in so hard and push yourself to the limit. It takes some time to approach the limit.

    Conclusion

No, I didn't suddenly become a Porsche brand ambassador overnight; the 992 GT3 and its entire development team more than deserved this great praise. The drivability, precision and agility of the new high-flyer are currently the absolute benchmarks in the sports car scene.

    Re: 992 GT3

The new Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring package

Stuttgart. A high-performance athlete that does not show off about its talent, and loves understatement: that is the new Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring package. The seventh edition of the powerful 375 kW (510 PS) GT car can now be ordered with the equipment package that was extremely popular for its predecessor. This purist 911 GT3 with a weight of just 1,418 kilograms is delivered with a six-speed GT sports gearbox as standard. For the first time, the Touring package can also be combined with the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission at no extra cost.

The most conspicuous difference on the exterior is omission of the fixed rear wing of the 911 GT3. The necessary downforce at high speeds and even more understatement are guaranteed by an automatically extending rear spoiler. Silver-coloured trim strips made of high-gloss anodised aluminium on the side windows are another distinguishing feature that underline the newcomer’s discreet appearance. The front end is painted completely in the exterior colour. The interior with extended leather items in Black is particularly elegant and is available exclusively for the GT3 with Touring package. The front of the dashboard and the upper side sections of the door trim panels have special surface embossing.

The name ‘Touring package’ goes back to an equipment variant of the 911 Carrera RS from model year 1973. Already then, the focus was on purist 911 design and elements of a classic interior. Porsche revived the idea again in 2017, and for the first time again offered a Touring package for the previous generation of the 911 GT3, the Type 991. Since then, this variant has appealed above all to lovers of top-class sports cars with a pronounced passion for understatement and classic driving pleasure.

Performance without the show: the exterior and interior details

A rear lid grille with the ‘GT3 touring’ logo in unique design is located over the high-revving engine. The trim strips of the side windows and the tailpipes of the sports exhaust system are silver-coloured. These elements are finished in satin-gloss Black in the optional Touring package. The front light modules are dark-tinted in this case.

The 911 GT3 with Touring package also offers the atmosphere of a classic sports car in the interior. The steering wheel rim, gear/selector lever, cover of the centre console, armrests in the door panels and the door handles are covered in black leather. The partial leather interior features black stitching. The seat centre panels are covered with black fabric, and the roofliner is also black. The head restraints bear embossed Porsche Crests. The door entry guards and trim elements on the dashboard and centre console are made of brushed black aluminium.

Porsche also offers almost all the optional equipment for the 911 GT3 in combination with the Touring package. This includes all exterior and wheel colours, LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System and Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus, various assist systems, the ceramic brake PCCB, the lift system on the front axle, all seat variants, the Chrono package and the audio systems.

Porsche Design also offers a very special chronograph for customers of the 911 GT3 with Touring package. The timepiece features a movement with flyback function. The winding rotor evokes the vehicle’s wheel design and is available in six different versions corresponding to the vehicle configuration. The dial bezel in Agate Grey Metallic is based on the vehicle’s paint finish. The dial itself has a matte black finish, while the luminous yellow chronograph hands match the colour of the rev counter. The chronograph 911 GT3 with Touring package is worn with a strap made of Porsche vehicle leather with “GT3” embossing. The black decorative stitching with Porsche vehicle thread gives the strap an additional finishing touch. The chronograph is produced by the company’s own Swiss watchmaking factory and is exclusively reserved for owners of the vehicle.

With know-how from motorsport: the Porsche 911 GT3

With the seventh edition of this high-performance sports car, Porsche has transferred race technology to a production model more systematically than ever before: the double-wishbone front suspension as well as the uncompromising aerodynamics with swan-neck rear wing – excluded from the Touring package – and striking diffuser originate from the successful 911 RSR GT racing car, and the 375 kW (510 PS) 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine is based on the drive unit of 911 GT3 R tried and tested in endurance racing.

Despite a wider body, larger wheels and additional technical features, the weight of the new GT3 is on a par with its predecessor. It weighs 1,418 kg with the manual transmission and 1,435 kg with the Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK). The bonnet made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), lightweight glass windows and forged alloy wheels exemplify the focus on weight-saving, as does the lightweight sports exhaust system.

Its racing genes are expressed in practically all the details of the new 911 GT3. The cockpit is equipped with a track screen for the first time: at the push of a button, the digital displays on the left and right of the central rev counter are reduced to the essential information on tyre and oil pressure, oil and coolant temperature and fuel tank fill level. The 911 GT3 has an easily accessible Mode switch on the steering wheel. This facilitates fast switching between Normal settings and the customisable Sport and Track modes.

Porsche is offering the 911 GT3 at a starting price of 170,969 euros including VAT and country-specific equipment. The Touring package can now also be ordered as an option at no extra charge.
