    sticky air conditioning switches

so my temp and fan speed switches are getting gummy/sticky.  Anyone replace theirs with new ones?  Where did you get them and how are they holing up?  Looking for quality replacements and Porsche does not sell just the switch....  tks

Best bet might be eBay - some salvaged parts off a lightly used wreck maybe?  No one will have just the switch I would think.

Yep, no has just the switches....  I read awhile back on another forum a place that some of the folks had used.  but I didn't bookmark it and now I cant find them.  They were pretty reasonable.  I prefer to use a place someone can give me some feedback on.  200.00 sounds a little steep....

yep.  looking for some personal feedback on those that have done it.  Seems like these guys refinish the used parts sent in???  Also, cant figure out if its 185 or 185 - 125 refunded 9if I send my old ones in) for a total of 60.00?  no one answers the phone of course.

It’s plus $125. Which will be refunded …

It may be a fine business. Not heard of them. I use Sunset Porsche in Beaverton.

From the granny generations, to cure a sticky rubber or plastic piece, rub baking soda mixed with water, leave the paste on for a bit and clean it off. Stickiness is gone.

I have a pair of sunglasses that are about to get a new lease on life if this works out.

curious - have you done this?  If so, have you done with the switches in or removed?   When you clean it off, use a damp cloth or remove with no water - dry?   Tks

I never did that on switches. But we did have a parring knife that has the handle turned sticky and it worked. But we washed it off under the sink. The rinse off method won't work with the switches obviously, but damp cloth should work.

    Re: sticky air conditioning switches

so, I did the swap.  I saved the old switches to experiment on them.  For me, I think mine were too far gone.  The baking soda trick did not work - it just helped to remove the black gooey mess.  I cleaned the rest off w/ rubbing alcohol.  Going to try some priming and painting later....  Here is a video I watched and the other only difference between it and my car is that I have the speaker grill in the passenger footwell.  It pops off then I could get to the T25 screw to remove the cig charger.  The whole process took about 1.5 hr as I was slow and careful so as not to break anything.  No broken clips or the like and the switches seems to work good.  The L one is a little stiff bit im hoping it will break in.  The most difficult part was finding the driver side T25 access panel screw and then removing it - it was tight and I was afraid of striping/breaking something.  No problems....  The next hardest part was removing the switches - I used toothpicks but it was still tricky but nothing broke.  A little trick going back too.  Once I figured out the 1st one, the 2nd was little easier but I was still worried about something breaking.  This is the vid I watched:  YouTube video

    Re: sticky air conditioning switches

What about sticky radio buttons? My AC switches are still fine; it's the two radio knobs that have become sticky. Any solution?

so I may be getting this mixed up with the driver side mirror knob which the dealer once broke and replaced.....  But cant these (the radio) just be pulled off and replaced?  Mine too are a little sticky and if I were a good planner, I would have looked into it while I had the stack pulled apart....  Rats.

I have once or twice used a dab of diluted Simple Green Cleaner to wipe them.  BUT, ive only done it lightly and don't want to do it anymore as not to make them worse and turn them super gooey and break down the coating more.  It helped but not for long.  ok, come to think of it I just answered my above question - I don't think you can order just the knobs from Porsche or I would have done it.

just looking, here is this: PelicanParts 997.1 Radio Knobs

They look different from mine and I don't know the radio part no. for my car or where to look to get it.  But if you try these - post the results.

    Re: sticky air conditioning switches

This looks more like the knob for the 986 radio; the previous generation.

    Re: sticky air conditioning switches

Suncoast has the knobs; but it looks like installation may be a bit tricky.

    Re: sticky air conditioning switches

didn't see the installation on suncoast parts - but again they look different form mine.....  gonna have to live with it for a bit longer  tks for looking

    Re: sticky air conditioning switches

I'm going to do the same; live with the current switches, which are only slightly sticky. I drive the car so infrequently that it's not worth the trouble, for now at least. (2008 Boxster S RS60, with only 16,000 miles after 12 years.)
