Just placed an order for an 987 S + some questions

I finally made up my mind and placed an order for an S. It's an April build so I should have it by May. It's going to be a long wait since I'm selling my 2003 2.7 next Thursday.

Anyway, here's what I ordered followed by a couple questions:

    P04 PASM
    P74 Bi-Xenon lighting system
    P77 Sport seats
    534 Alarm
    567 Top tinted windscreen
    573 Fully automatic climate control
    635 ParkAssist
    Z4 Basalt Black
    446 Wheel centre set
    P16 PCM II
640 Sport Chrono Plus (with PCM)
DF Full leather - stone grey
P73 Bose sound system + wind deflector
    454 Cruise control
    342 Heated seats
    608 HomeLink
431 Three-spoke multi-function steering wheel in smooth leather (only with PCM)

    Now the questions:

    1) Steering wheel

I'm really undecided between the multi-function one and the following:
460 Three-spoke sports steering wheel in smooth leather

The price difference is about $40 so it's really a matter of functionality vs agronomy. The sports one seems thicker (but I think they are the same size and thickness) and has that fantastic thumbs grip. The multi-function one has the option to control the pcm and radio from the wheel.
What wheel would you choose and why?

    2) Exterior color
I currently have a polar grey/black top and I really like it. I choose black/black to get away from the colors or cars I had so far: grey and silvers.

I haven't yet seen any polar grey or basalt black other than in pictures. Anyone seen both live and if so what's your impressions on these colors?

    Thanks,
    Steven

Re: Just placed an order for an 987 S + some questions

I've gone for the "basic" sport steering wheel option on my "S". The smooth sport steering wheel was three times the price for just smooth finish leather on the rim (as against grain finish leather) and a leather airbag cover instead of grainy plastic. I don't personally like the standard or multi function wheel as its style better suits the Cayenne.

That's certainly a mega spec - and I thought I had gone beserk ticking every box! My dealer's demonstrator "S" was basalt black / black and it looked great, but black does show the slightest mark or scratch.

Re: Just placed an order for an 987 S + some questions

Nice full spec! My opinions only.....

If you going all the way with PCM then get the multi-function wheel......it's probably one of the best ones out there with the thumb wheels and all......pretty slick.

I'm not a huge fan of Basalt Black.....to me it looks like regular black car with a light coating of dust on it.....like it's a freshly washed black car thats been sitting out in the open a day or two.

When you say "polar grey" do you mean Polar Silver? This color is no longer available from Porsche except for Paint to Sample option....$$$, it is a great color though.

Have you taken a look at Atlas Grey? This is my favorite at this point. Atlas with a black top.....

Re: Just placed an order for an 987 S + some questions

Basalt black is pretty nice. Subtle metallics. Looks like it will hide the minor scratches and stuff much better than black. I almost went for it but I think it would be best with black interior and that scares me in Phoenix.

I'm choosing stone grey for the interior which I believe will look very good with either black or any silver. I've seen it in person and it's really a very nice color.

That's exactly my fear. And since I've never seen any in person I'm considering either black or a grey color.

My 2003 2.7 is polar grey (at that time a regular color). Yes, I'm also considering either atlas grey or seal grey, but just like the basalt black, I've never seen any in person. I guess I should ask for any 996 or 997 with any of these colors to see them personally.

Atlas grey with stone grey interior does seem to look very nice

    Hi Steven,

Congratulations on your order- looks like a repeat customer, that's a good sign. I just placed my order yesterday.

Although I didn't order PCM, I was instantly sold on the smaller sports wheel. The thumb grips are a nice bonus. I used to own a highly modded '93 RX-7. When I changed over from the stock steering wheel to a 13" suede Momo wheel the car took on another shade of sports personality. Aside from the ratio benefit, the car felt a whole lot "sportier". When I sold the car, I made sure to take the Momo with me!

As for the Boxster, I found the stock size wheel to actually be on the larger side; not oversize, but I was glad to be able to pick a smaller wheel.
On the other hand, I can see your dilemma- being able to control radio/PCM functions from the wheel is definitely a benefit.

That said, my view boils down to this; the primary interface with the car is the steering wheel (and pedals). Since this is not just any ordinary car, and it's suited to performance driving, I'd focus my priorities toward that. If the size of the multi-function wheel suits you, then go with that. But if you prefer the smaller wheel because it will tighten up the car just that much more (plus take up a bit less space) then go with that. Whichever you feel maximizes your relationship between the car and the road will be the best choice.

I took delivery of my triple black 987 3 weeks ago. Looking at your options list. You have the Option P16(PCM2.1) if you want the phone to work you will need Option #666 (phone module $960) which is why my PCM will not recongize the T-Mobile SIM card.

I know. But for that kind of money, and since I have two different numbers and phones, I decided to go with a bluetooth car kit. A possibility is the following one:
